It’s the Letts bass thread all over again!

Shonky work delivered to a customer who can’t be bothered to stand up for himself.

Unless you name the builder, this thread is pointless. If it’s supposed to serve as a warning, it doesn’t with those details.

You’ve already decided it’s unacceptable or you wouldn't have posted it.

Get a grip and send it back for a refund and go somewhere else.

….which is exactly what I thought when I read the first post. I think the reality is other bass players might currently be committing money to a luthier who might be about to go Full Letts….

That is absolutely shocking and should be rejected. It's damaged!

There's absolutely no pride in that work at all. Did someone really look at that and say, "that's good to go, he'll be over the moon with that."?

Calm down, man. I had already decided it was unacceptable, I was looking for help and solutions on what to do about it.

I have sent the bass back and he is going to refinish it.

Good on you mate. I hope said luthier sorts things out to your satisfaction.

I'd just get a refund. Work like that isn't what I'd want in a custom bass, and a luthier that sends you a bass like that isn't one I'd trust/want to refinish it. Best advice is get your money back and go elsewhere. I'll be honest and say I dont understand the reluctance to name the builder unless you're happy for others to be provided with shoddy work jist like you have? All you're doing is protecting someone that's not bothered to provide you with a decent quality of work and sounds like they've tried to shine you on too... Reputations are earned either way, you're allowing others to get burned by protecting this builders reputation despite their work standards and service and allowing others to perhaps assume its someone who it isn't and inadvertently tarnish someone else's reputation. Dem's my two cents, not that they were asked for!

In fairness, the thread title is: "Disappointing new bass day...I would appreciate some opinions.".

So, opinions you got! 🙂

Out of all curiosity what would you have done if there was no Basschat?

Not received 4 million different but the same answers and got the bass on its way back to the manufacturer on day one perhaps 😂

Are they going to sort the frets and other issues too? Didn't look like the only problem was the finish but obvs its you call and bass/money.

If the OP still wanted the bass and works completed, p*ssing off the “luthier” by making it public wouldn’t be a great start to working things out amicably.

Bad move requesting a repair. The guy is clearly a chancer so it'll prob come back with a whole set of different probs. If you did this on credit card you should be good to go.

Such a sad situation and the OP has my sympathy. I too would be gutted and the whole enjoyment and experience has been ruined

Hope you get an acceptable outcome that you’re happy with

If it was one or maybe two small issues, then sending it back (at the luthier's expense) might be fair, but this looks like it was built by someone that either just didnt care or didn't have the skills to pull off the build to a consumer level standard. Which would make me (personally) loose faith in the maker and want a refund. I'll bet good money if the OP gets it back, it will still have issues. Though I hope for their sake it comes back immaculate and that they are absolutely chuffed with it.

I'm perfectly calm. I'm not the one who is £2,300 out of pocket.

The problem with the sort of person you're dealing with is that if they sent that bass out thinking it was in any way acceptable, giving them a second chance at f*c*ing it up is the worst thing you can do.

You're probably not aware of the 'Letts' thread that has been referred to, but we've seen it before.

If it was just just the paint job, borderline, but it has more issues than that.

Even if you get something back that you can live with, it will never be the custom bass experience you had in mind when you ordered it.

Tell them you've changed your mind and ask for a full refund. You can thank us later.

Not acceptable at all, I'd only accept that back if every single issue is resolved and it is in showroom condition.  It's brand new bass, and arguably a refinish is already devaluing it.

This is brutally put but I agree

UPDATE:

Thank you all for your input! The bass is on its way back to the builder at no cost to me and I have been assured that it will be repaired and made perfect.

I only shared the ugly aspects of it but it's not all bad, the bass plays really well and the neck is beautiful. It also looks awesome as long as you don't look too close. 😅  I'm not making excuses for him because obviously it should all be perfect.

I am giving him a second chance because I did a lot of research on this guy and have spoken personally to someone who owns one, for some reason it seems like I got unlucky. I really want this bass and if it's not perfect I can always send it back again for a full refund although I pray that it doesn't come down to that. If I had a feeling that he was consistently putting out shoddy work and scamming people it would be a different story. He seems to be keen to make amends so fingers crossed.

Coming on too strong and belittling the OP is a classic online blunder. It puts them and others off, and makes this forum less useful.

Others would disagree on all of those points 👍

Nice looking bass, what’s the circuitry?

Paint job aside, this image concerns me. Is he making a new neck or just ripping the frets out and replacing them? Hopefully flat 🤷‍♂️

It will have to be new binding anyway. It might be the angle the recent body photo has been taken, but I don't like the look of the string path in relation to either the neck or pick-up's.
