What are your irrational prejudices? I have some bonkers ones...

1. MD Phillips' Monstrosities.

2. Garden shed reliced travesties.

3. Precisions with the PJ configuration. The J pup always sounds Schieße to my ears!

4. Single cut basses with the top bout that runs a quarter of the way up the neck. Eg Fodera Emperor, Sire Marcus Miller F-10.

Choices 1 & 2 could well go hand in hand.

I don't know what I'm more proud of - the fact that I regularly gig with basses which would cause many of the members of BassChat to reach for their weapon of choice, or that my own prejudices are so absurd that it's pointless trying to explain them.

While there are several things in the Wonderful World of Bass that make me roll my eyes and tut, there are only two which cause me to clench my teeth, fists and buttocks simultaneously. Both are pictured here:

Exhibit A: The two "extra" screws on some BBoT bridges. Why oh Lord, why?

Exhibit B: That bonus bit of wood at the dusty end of the neck, often shaped into a jaunty diagonal. I don't know what it's called, I just don't like it.

I have no doubt that these are perfectly great sounding basses and fun to play, but I'm afraid if they ever fell into my hands, I'd probably have to take them into the darkest part of the woods and put them out of their misery for the good of mankind.

Calling a neck made of carbon fibre "graphite".

Pretending that "graphite/carbon fibre" necks aren't actually reinforced plastic. Because yes, they are plastic.

The rear body point on series 1 Alembics were supposedly to make their owners use guitar stands, as the guy who started the company (I'm too lazy too Google...) was fed up of doing neck / headstock repairs on basses that had been typically just leaned against the amp and fallen over (as they do).

Obviously this was ineffective with my '76 S1, as it's got a headstock repair (albeit a neat one)

Have to say I personally like the "point" and "omega" body designs though :i-m_so_happy:  I can live with most body designs, other than the truly fugly Warwick Buzzard.

If I ever had an Alembic, I'd saw it off.

Don't know about redundant screws, but my bass with such an 'extra bit' has it so the neck can have room for more relief behind the fretted part of the neck and five mounting screws.

There's nothing irrational about those items.

Those sperm whale basses are particularly stupid.

Agreed, and some of us don't even get sweaty hands. I have a variety of satin necks, glossy graphite necks, oil finished necks, and even a couple of nitro finished gloss necks, and I don't have a 'sticky' problem with any of them, thankfully.

I don’t get particularly sweaty hands but my thumb still sticks. It wouldn’t be so bad if it wasn’t for a couple of things… I have a thumb injury I got as a child, this is exacerbated by neuropathic nerve damage that goes from my neck, down my arm and into my thumb. And I can’t play with my thumb brace on. It bloomin’ hurts!

This is multiplied a million times by blokes who wear hats on stage.

I once played a gig wearing 9 different hats on top of each other...

There was an Aussie bush hat, a fez, a trilby, a straw boater, 4 baseball caps and a beanie.

I realised as I tried to stop 'em all toppling that I looked like a bit of a cock 😁

Might try it again one day.

If a bass has vibrato arm, and this goes for guitars too, stop calling the damn thing a tremolo.

A vibrato arm cannot do changes in volume.  Thats what a tremolo does.  A vibrato changes pitch.

And in any case, saying tremolo means you miss out on the opportunity to say "whammy bar". Life is too short to pass up such chances at mirth.
