Had a think about this, and really just comes down to 2:

  • Black blocks on a maple board.   Ugh.
  • Jam nights with no proper song list plan.   Inevitably just drifts into the guitarist(s) widdling endless blues solos (suffered this torture earlier this week.....)

All eye of the beholder I know, but re some earlier posts I'd have to say that IMHO baked beans, sunburst with tort, and Wal basses are 3 of mankind's greatest achievements.   Probably in that order

I like the black blocks on a maple board, mainly because of Aston Barrett’s 71 jazz bass, but agree with the rest

blocks on a p bass...........NO

it's ok if you've put a jazz bass neck on it though

Yes. Yes. Yes. The worst sacrilege there is. I would buy a Classic Vibe 70s mocha if it had a proper neck on it.

Even now I'd buy a body to put the right neck on it.

Yamaha basses. A company that makes speed boat engines, calculators and motorbikes can't make good guitars.

Single cut basses where the top bout runs half way up the fretboard. Shudders.

Can I assume Leo didn't put blocks on a Precision from inception to selling up in 1965? But what if he did...

Leo didn't put blocks on any bass during his ownership.

The rest is hypothetical. Supposing he'd designed the Ricky and called that a Precision?

I was just about to say the same thing. They always seem to have way too many strings and knobs too, and ridiculously OTT figured wood.

I asked hypothetically. Would feelings about them be the same if he had included them. We'll obviously never know.

You'd hate my basses then!

Referring to basses as “she”.

naming basses.

I skip ads or posts naming an instrument or calling it "she".

Artificially relic'd basses

If looking at a for sale item I'll factor in the cost of a refin.

The laughable one is "professionally relic'd".

My hatred of baked beans is not irrational.

They deserve all the hatred I can muster. The vile taste, the vile texture. The revolting sauce they are in. They alone are reason enough for humanity to end.

Anyone and everyone who had any involvement in them being not only available for sale, but actually grown and harvested at all should be propelled straight into the sun.

Cheese beanos is one of my favourite meals (cheese on toast with beans on top).

WAL basses.

They're ugly. Don't care what they sound like, how good their build quality is or, how rare they are. Apart from their inconceivable sales value (as I'd sell it immediately) you couldn't give me one for free.

I'm indifferent to Wals - I think there was one song with a fretless in it which was OK, but otherwise they're indistinct.

Slap bass (mainly because I'm crap at it)

Ironically, and though I admire his ability, my favourite Level 42 songs are the ones without slap.

Some of the ridiculous "pop"s, especially in 70's music simply don't fit in to the song.

Same with “L@@k” - unbeknownst to some sellers, I’ve actually not bought something I really wanted to buy because they put “L@@k” in their advert.

Petty.

But it’s seemingly less prevalent these days.

So maybe my strategy is working 😆

Oasis. What a pair of unspeakable twàts.

I feel I must take issue here. The thread title clearly asks for IRRATIONAL prejudices.

My biggest gripe is primary coloured instruments - was it Fender himself who questioned who on earth would want to play a blue/red/green etc guitar? Someone high profile of the time did, anyway. I heard it recently on an episode of 5 Watt World.
Instruments should either be black, white, or some kind of wood grain/natural finish - like classical instruments - if someone turned up with a metallic red trumpet you'd think they were a right clown... And headstocks should always match the body, no matter what.

What's especially bad is when you have a primary colour instrument with a non-painted headstock, rosewood fretboard, and coloured pickguard. 🥲
Like this fella here... Four different colours going on and none of them really match, just tacky. No style, no consistency.
it would look more acceptable with a matching blue headstock and a white pickguard. (but still wrong)

Not really a prejudice, but I’ve never understood why anyone would wear a hat when someone else has taken the trouble to provide a perfectly good, weatherproof roof over their heads. Ungrateful, I call it 😂

Playing at light speed a la Mohini Dey - Yes I can't do it but it doesn't sound musical in the slightest.

Multi effects pedals

Brightly coloured straps

Sound of a fretted jazz bass when it is played by me.
