A friend of mine posted a picture of his 54 Telecaster today, as he's had it for two years. In that time he's had four fret dresses and a pickup rewind, but he does play about 350 gigs a year.

That's how vintage guitars should be treated.

I agree! I don't see the point of owning an instrument that is pristine and with all original parts. If the instrument has  had parts replaced, refretted etc then that is because its a brilliant instrument that has been enjoyed and used and in some cases have really interesting stories and history linked to them.

My p bass has one pre CBS and one post CBS pickup. Obviously, one had died and back then, pickups rewinds weren't a thing so whoever owned it at the time went to a music store and ordered in a replacement fender pickup for it!

I think it's easy to lose sight with these vintage instruments that back then they were just merely tools! 😂

I totally agree, the problem arises when people price and describe them as all original when they are far from being. It’s not a problem when they’re priced accordingly.

Couple of nice refinished P basses up at Andy Baxter at the moment - not collector's items but quite a cheap way of going vintage. They sound good too - the black one is very light and has that really woody hollow tone I often associate with early '70s P basses. The white one seems to have a thicker sound - more going on in the midrange (I think they have identical strings on them).

As they say up here in Lancashire....."It takes all sorts...."

I think that's at least £12000 overpriced. I watched the videos from the first auction, and the provenance was fairly tenuous by their own admission wasn't it? I don't doubt someone will buy it eventually though!

The providence isn’t worth much anyway. He probably didn’t know he owned half of his collection.

This has been my daily drool recently

seems a bit overpriced compared to a neater looking 72 on Andy Baxters site but still has me looking longingly daily 😍

It’s a beauty and I always offer a little discount to BC members too. Both @AndyTravis and @Old Man Riva have played this at the Birmingham show.

That’s some collection,  Vintage wise ,sunburst is my favourite for a precision, and Olympic white for jazzes, but I think there’s something special about the candy apple red , I’d happy have that P or jazz especially with the matching headstock, be interesting to see how the bidding goes

You’re like me, I love a sunburst vintage Fender, never been too keen on custom colours (thankfully with prices these days), but Oly white is fab on a Jazz. Lucky to have an original finish stack knob in Oly White.
The collection in the auction is a great set of CAR’s though if that’s your thing.

I'd take a red (dakota, CA and fiesta in most to least favourite order) 60s Jazz bass over an OW one any day. I'm not sure what it is but red is so visually pleasing to me on an old Jazz. Always a white scratchplate though. I remember Andy Baxter had a dakota red 66 in about 10 years ago before the prices went mental, which I almost pulled the trigger on, and still regret that I didn't
