Bad Demos!

Most online demo videos are nasty. Slapping, guitarists in disguise, ambient mic'ing, bass thru 15 watt practice combo, webcam microphone, DI'd fuzz pedal, bass recorded at threshold of human hearing levels... Did I miss any?

Im not fussy as i can live with certain things such as it being through a little amp, as many people practice through little amps so that's cool. I don't mind if the person isn't that greatest player, long as they are playing something skill appropriate say a simple blues, rock, funk lines gives me the gist of things.

Slapping only is one that drives me nuts. I turn off or leave a comment lol. Poor mics is annoying too. Using effects all through the demo is annoying as i want to hear the actual sound. Bad recording levels. Too much talking and only a few seconds of playing.

This is supposed to be a sublime instrument. Depends who's playing it I suppose..

To be fair, it hasn't been put up as a demo, it's a new owner rather egotistically showing his bass off - those moves, those facial expressions, those shorts :shok:

This is more like it...https://www.youtube....DDigVmVFc#t=538 or this... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycN9x_5MqHQ

Another two Rob Allens but VERY different approach and playing.

My pet peeve is people using a demo of a bass to show off their playing (and I know I'm not alone in this)

Slapping and playing a bass 19 to the dozen tells you nothing about how the bass sounds, I like to hear legato playing with plenty of sustained notes to hear how the bass sounds...

I can understand why people hate when there is an excessive use of slapping or done to a level which is far above or below the standard you'd want but I see no issue with a little bit of appropriate slappage. I never use a plectrum but I still find it quite good to hear how it sounds (roughly) when one is used.

Youtube bass demos. Very rare do you find a useful one, the rest of the time it's just self indulgent, smug, samey sounding slappery. Instant switch off. That said the best of a bad bunch are probably the session music ones (even though there's still too much slap and it's all in German xD)

This is a particularly annoying example I found recently;

SPB-3 Quarter Pound for P-Bass:

That one in particular does my nut. I was trying to suss out whether to buy a bass with QP's as they're 'made' for the type of music I play (punk, rock, indie etc.) - I don't get ANY idea of how they really sound from that video.

I really can't see the point of on-line demos. They tell me nothing about how the bass will sound in my hands through my rig playing with my band.

Very true. That said, sometimes that's all you've got...

But TBH unless I buy something that is very cheap and poorly made it will appeal to someone even if that someone is not me. It's simple enough for me to buy instruments solely on looks and move them on if the sounds and playability don't do it for me.

You've got to admire the stance, though...

I know both of these boys.
They are top notch musicians IMO, and good lads!
I do take your point that as a demo for the pickups, they don't really show what they can do for standard finger type playing etc.
But they were asked to demo like this because they'd been seen playing this kind of style.
Although i dont want to give the impression i speak for them, i just wanted to give some understanding from their point of view really :)

Apologies if offence caused.
That's the trouble with taking the piss out of people doing stuff on a public video, on a public forum. :)

I find the GAK demos to be pretty much as bad as they could possibly be. I can't complain though because I doubt I could do better than either of these.

Yes, it's the guitarist playing bass syndrome. Very sloppy playing by a guitarist pretending to be a bassist. I assume he got the job because he sounded good in front of a camera. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5_KBiLxlfc

No offence caused at all.
I'm sure the boys would laugh if they saw it too!
Really I just wanted to put it in context a little and fight their corner, if nothing else.
It's like I said, they are top musicians, this is only a snapshot of what they do.
If this type of technical playing is what your into, this project of theirs is called 'kinky wizards'.
Great name hahaha

I have NO issue with the drummer. ;)
You do if you have issues with the bass player. They are brothers! Haha.
I used to play with the drummer and can confirm, he is a incredible drumster ;)

Kinda hard to tell but it looks like the EQ setting on the amp are all over the shop so hardly useful at all.

Awesome - 5-string bass demo where he doesn't use the B for anything but a thumb rest...

Neither! It's just not particularly helpful as a pickup demo. But I wouldn't be too useful in that context either.
