JonnyM Posted March 7, 2014 Share Posted March 7, 2014 So, after a number of years playing modern long scale basses with 5+ strings, this polar-opposite rock beast lands on my doorstep: a late 60's Gibson EB3. The low end is truly walloping, but the fun will really start when a set of D'Addario Chrome flatwounds arrive tomorrow to replace the old roundwounds it's currently wearing... Clarky Posted March 7, 2014 Share Posted March 7, 2014 Wow, that is stunning and - as you say - poles apart from the other main bass in your sig On a related note, the modern take on this (Gibson SG bass) seems to be really good value (£599 for the 2014 'Special' or the faded cherry version at Dawsons) given its US-made. Got me thinking .... [/quote] Clarky - i just got a chocolate satin SG Special on tuesday & really love it. Silly price for a USA Gibson & the vintage brown hardcase is rather nice too. JonnyM Posted March 8, 2014 Author Share Posted March 8, 2014 So, the Chrome Flatwounds (short scale) turned up today, as did Grand Wazoo's Drophead marvel... We had a quick blast (no time to fit the flats and had to keep it down 'cos of neighbours ) and agreed that the sounds we were getting were just "right", especially pushing some overdrive.
