1.
...The guitar to bass ratio at all the shows I have been to recently has been 99:1 so this should be a nice change.
Unfortunately, due to the popularity of Royal Blood, you may be in for a shock - at least tone-wise... ;-)
2. So last year, the reason for there being so few exhibitors was another show being held on the same weekend. Fair enough. This year, there's no clash, but even fewer exhibitors and of those, hardly any big names... Errmmm, sorry...what? I don't understand. Coupled with a large number of return performers, I'm worried that if I went, it would feel like I'd gone back to LBGS 2014/13/12, only emptier... I might be a no-show at this show.
3. Gratuitous Gibson EB3 shots! Got this 1960's lovely at the end of Feb and have added a mod bar & Chrome flats. Saw Mike Watt & the Missingmen at The Lexington and Watt signed the back plate - a truly genuine bloke who called me his bass brother :-) Serial no. dates it to 1967, pots are Jan. '69. Seller told me the tuners had been replaced, but they are dead right for the rest of the instrument and no extra screw holes, so hmmm...bit of a puzzle. Love the neck and this thing is light too - something south of 8lbs I reckon. Sound is fantastic and has obviously seen a couple of enthusiastic gigs in it's time - check out the wear. Enjoy!
4. Just to chime in here, I had an Oly white '61 Jazz bass with the body refinished by Clive Brown and it fooled a guy who is a vintage Jazz expert! When he was looking at it, I gave nothing away. - our conversation went something like this: Him: "So this is all original, right? Pots are original...?" Me: "Yes... All original..." Him: "You've had the neck off of course?" Me: "Yup, it's late '61" Him: "Beautiful...I love the way the finish has aged too" Me: "You won't believe it, but it's a refin..." Him, "No no...it can't be...the yellowed colour fade is right...the wear looks like real wear... Are you sure this is a refin?" Well, you get the idea... GLWTS!
5. Can anyone recommend a gig bag for a late 60's (short scale) Gibson EB3? Of course a regular gig bag will fit - I have one, but it's a bit too roomy & it'd be nice to have one that's a proper fit. I'm based in the UK, been searching high & low and it seems bizarre that Gibson don't sell them. All I can find is the Fender Urban, which is cheap & might do, but I'd prefer something with more padding that doesn't go into the Reunion/Harvest price range - more like £100 than £300+. Just posted this on TalkBass & someone said take it to a shop & try guitar gig bags - I might find one that'll fit... Anyone actually got one that does? (Me just being lazy ) Cheers!
6. So, the Chrome Flatwounds (short scale) turned up today, as did Grand Wazoo's Drophead marvel... We had a quick blast (no time to fit the flats and had to keep it down 'cos of neighbours ) and agreed that the sounds we were getting were just "right", especially pushing some overdrive. Will be even better with the flats - I'll report back soon
7. So, after a number of years playing modern long scale basses with 5+ strings, this polar-opposite rock beast lands on my doorstep: a late 60's Gibson EB3. The low end is truly walloping, but the fun will really start when a set of D'Addario Chrome flatwounds arrive tomorrow to replace the old roundwounds it's currently wearing... At some point soon, a good friend of mine will be bringing over Ashdown's take on a B15 - lawdy, i can hardly wait!
8. Just got my ticket for Sunday - could easily miss most of the players listed, but not Messrs. Bruce & Sklar
9.
No Jonny, no!!!!!! I can't stop thinking of this bass too ;-(
It will have your soul BWWWAAAHHAAHAHA!!!
