Most of what I've said about playing bass on here is bollocks.

And here I was believing every word you said... so what does that make me? :o :(

I'll be interested to hear how this progresses Nige. One of the things I've found over the years is that learning something new seems to follow a kind of pendulum pattern, where you oscillate between manic enthusiasm for the sheer joy of learning, and the deep depression of feeling that you will never master it... You are clearly at the beginning of your quest, so keep us informed of how you feel it is progressing!

Interesting comments about teachers and students on this thread too. In my day job I am a teacher (of science, not music!) and I am a great believer that there is no such thing as a great teacher for everyone. Every teacher is different just as every student is different. It is impossible to please all of the people all of the time.

This Jake of which you speak is clearly a great teacher for you - whereas others may well find him less inspiring. That's the beauty of the process, but also the difficulty! How does one find the right teacher??

Sounds like you've been very lucky there (or done some serious research!).

Good luck on your journey. It is one that I hope to make myself one day... B)

Love it Nige! I can feel the glow of your buzz from here mate.

I need to start taking lessons at some point myself. I'm still stumbling through the darkness, finding my way as a go - and having fun with that, sure. But I know there'll soon come a time when I need someone else to help untangle what I've learned and make better sense of it all. Your post makes me think I should do this sooner than later.

PS: "pissing twattery" - I'm having that one for myself :D

Who is this Jake fellow you keep referring to?
Here you go mate http://basschat.co.uk/topic/6270-jakesbass-jakesbass-and-thrice-jakesbass/ Jake's an amazing tutor, and a brilliant musician.

It's very important you choose a tutor to suit you, as has been said above.

I'm also going to give a big shout out for Steve Woodcock too (Stickman on BC). Also an amazing player on bass and Chapman Stick, and an ace tutor. I chose Jake over Steve because of certain peculiarities I have that Jake is able to rip apart. This is no reflection on Steve at all, it's just specific to my particular learning needs and my personality that I chose Jake. Steve is brilliant at explaining theory and demonstrating practical application, and have no hesitation in recommending you check him out if you want a tutor for any level of experience. He's in West London. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/180288-bass-tuition-available-in-west-london/

Nige a huge part of it is all about pattern recognition especially reading the dots on the lines (IMHO)

check out this little app - very interactive and useful for reading/recognising/learning notation and syncopation

notreble have a good apps section - this one looks great for the more advanced harmony stuff :gas:

Thank you! I'll have a good look at these.

I should have been clearer about what I meant by the pattern recognition, I'm pretty good at it, but there are loads of patterns I've clearly missed. One that Jake pointed out made me feel like right f***ing dumbbell. It saves so much time having someone point out the patterns instead of trying to reinvent the wheel. That makes space for one to develop patterns that fit with one's aesthetic. That will hopefully come much further down the line.

Thanks again mate.

When I read the above sentence the first thing I thought was "That sounds just like an early 80s Neal Peart lyric".
That really would not be out of place on "Permanent Waves", I can hear Geddy warbling it as I write. :D

Fabulous Nige :D

I'm enjoying going back and re-learning theory after a 20 year break... It is quite liberating and I enjoy the mathematical quality. And agree that a fab teacher can bring things to life (although my Mr Ace was making my grey matter work too hard in my last lesson to the point where I told him "I don't like you anymore" )

I honestly don't think you'll lose "you" as others have been concerned about...what will happen is it will evolve "you".

The great thing about your posts, Nigel is that they are full of passion and love of music.
That's not bollocks.

But I'm so glad you're getting inspiration from a great teacher. Guitarist in one of my bands recently expressed surprise that I was 'still having lessons' and thought I should have 'moved on' from that by now. This is a guy who has no clue what key he is playing in.

I love my lessons, even tho I only go every 2-3 weeks now. But I would never give them up!

You'll be ruining Kits song with Jaco esque bass lines before you know it! ;)

Ahahaha! I think that's why people are scared to learn, they think they will become obsessed with jazz  Have no fear, all I want to do is harness my musical intelligence in the most efficient, effective, and inspirational way, given my limited time and ability :)

Thanks for the kind words Nige, although I honestly think that it's down to the enthusiasm of the student. I am merely a facilitator with a lucky knack for being able to word things clearly.
I like to try to find what the student is turned on by, that however is not always possible, so I would always recommend that people try a few tutors.

That's exactly what you are, Jake. But you also have certain rare skill with people - you have developed an attitude that means you NEVER teach to an agenda. I think you truly believe the unique musician within each of your students should be brought out uncorrupted, and the rare bit is that you seem to be able to recognise that unique musician after a very short time. You are a true facilitator, and I think that's very rare.

EDIT: I should add that I recognised you would be the right teacher for me having read some of your posts on here not long after I joined Basschat, I seem to remember saying that in a thread. I booked a lesson with you and you kind of totally took me apart with one observation. I needed to analyse that observation and its implications. I realised that I was much smaller than I thought I was, that my personality on the instrument, and my music in general, was simply not enough, I felt like a f***ing musical shrimp. The main realisation was that I was illiterate, that I was a pale shadow of what I aspire to. You showed me the possibilities, but had not the bollocks to rise to the immense challenge at that time. I realised that I had no legitimate excuses. It's taken me three years since then to realise that sh*t. You have actually facilitated more than the musician, certainly in me anyway. When the student is ready the teacher will arrive.

You know, if hadn't joined Basschat I'd have been blissfully ignorant even now, enjoying my restricted, rancid efforts. Learning as much as you can about what you love does not suck. Don't f***ing waste it.
