Personally it has a fairly 'tubey' sound with the EQ at 12'o clock. As it is naturally bass heavy and mid scooped.

This.

I changed the valves so the breakup didn't kick in so early. Great old school tone :)

Yes, seriously: if you do nothing to change the sound, you'll already have tubey, fatty sound.
From there, EQ all you like, as it never becomes modern and Hi-Fi.

Change the tubes mainly for different gain levels.

Right now I'm having fun with a new Qsiure CV '50s P with factory strings (easy on the fingers, but seem deadish), and with a sad face on the EQ (though admittedly the sad face is hard to see with those round knobs - and so few of them too!)
In addition, I'm very active at moving my playing hand between the neck and the bridge to press out some treble occasionally.

Enjoy your new amp!

best,
bert

I've been playing with everything at 12, which gives quite a nice overdrive sound, but not really enough of a contrast when I then use my distortion pedal.

I'm now playing around with a lower gain for my clean tone, although I'm leaning more towards dropping my distortion pedal and just using the overdrive tone of the amp itself as it's got quite addictive!

So far I'm finding my fav setting as others have said, tone min, mid max and bass almost min. Sounds great, and there is so much volume it's crazy. Had the gain upto 12 o'clock without any real breakup, but with both cabs, aguilar GS112 x2 I only had both volume and gain on 2!!!

Everything on max :D

Not really as obviously that would create a black hole if I did, I have pretty much Gain around 11 o'clock, Bass 12 o'clock, Mids 4 o'clock, Treble 11 o'clock and Volume to suit
