FAVE BASS DISTORTION SOUND?

I love the fuzz bass on the Monks "Black Monk Time". I've no idea whether it's a fuzz pedal or a blown speaker, or perhaps both. This song is a minute and a half of almost completely inane 60s pop, but the intensity of the performance, plus the fuzz bass and banjo make it fantastic!

My fave bass tone? This one since the first night I heard it in '78 ............. FF to 2:16
A John Birch custom EB3, with two of the loudest output pickups made at that time thru' an on-board overdrive built by JayDee.
Having a 5000+ watt PA style backline, just for his bass probably nudged it along a bit though.

Loved it so much I got John to build me one too :gas:

This also sounds badass - awesome tune!

I also love the fact that the cowboy is so tough he doesn't nod in time with the music.

Both posted before in other threads but worth re-stating here:
This is pretty crunchy:

Chris Squire does a good distorted tone too from time to time - his classic here:

  • 1 year later...

I'm going to be incredibly cheeky and proffer one of my own:

Not the sound I had in mind when we went into the studio. I thought "a bit of grit" would work quite nicely...but after playing around with a few different amps, the engineer pulled a ProCo Rat out of a cupboard and put that between my T-bird and some massive Hughes & Kettner valve head, and so we ended up with what can only be described as pure filth.

I raise you John Entwistle, Live at Leeds! That for me is an incredible tone.

I also raise you Chris Steele from Alexisonfire, who is HUGELY underrated, his lines are amazing and technical while simple.

Also Joe Principe of Rise Against, another underrated bass player with some incredible lines and one hell of a tone!

I'm not going back on my previous Daisy Chainsaw recommendation but Robert Sledge from Ben Folds Five has been expertly fuzzing up his bass since the mid '90s. Here he is doing it most recently, but probably still with one or two green Sovtek Big Muffs. This guy doesn't get nearly enough credit as a bassist. He plays upright and synth bass too. And sings harmony live. He's just bossing it.

Lemmy of course, driven Marshall Super Bass 100's... B)

Vaguely remember hearing some excellent fuzz bass playing on a number of Dub Syndicate records, though can't remember who played on them (or what the albums were called!).

Seem to recall a superb driven bass sound on the ISIS album "Celestial", obviously they turned the SVT up full blast, you can just hear those valves glowing.

I remember shopping for a distortion/fuzz pedal in the late 80's, and getting some disparaging looks & comments from the obviously shred guitar/hair "metal" worshipping salesmen when I said I played bass... Music shops these days just aren't what they used to be... with their friendly, inclusive and helpful manners.

If I may be so bold.

My own tone on this track. It's very gritty but not over the top. Gibson Grabber to VT Bass Deluxe.

Also Young Widows - Old Skin. Gibson RD, Rat LM308, SS Ampegs.

Defeater - The Red White and blues. Bloody upfront and nasty. Sits well in the mix.
