Chris Horton
Just watched "Alabama Shakes" on Jooles holland. I loved em ! what a cool , dirty , layed back sound and a young band Muting under the bridge of the precision , sweet. Budgetneil
+1 Never heard them before but loved their "Later..." slot. The singer had an awesome voice. I noticed the precision mute too - looked like one of those car windscreen demisting pads jammed under the strings. Skol303
Yep... saw 'em, loved 'em! Great band and a refreshingly honest vibe about them. The singer herself is fantastic... superb voice and very quirky; like a cross between "Macy Gray and Matt Lucas", visually-speaking:
Son of the Wear
They were excellent - great singer and a tight band. I hadn't heard them before but will seek 'em out now. Saw the mute on the bass - I was trying to work out what he was using and I think Budgetneil might have got it right!
Muzz
Loved this last night, great, great voice, and a really good band, especially the drummer. Will be checking them out more extensively when I get a mo.
DrBike
The bass player was pulling some strange faces, I wasn't sure if he was coming or just really getting into the groove.

Gareth Hughes
Didn't see the Jools performance but heard this band for the first time at the weekend on Sound Opinions, a great radio show from Chicago. Check it out - there's a great interview with the band and several amazing live in session performances. The thing that blew me away, aside from the songs, groove and voice - was that these songs were being performed live, in the middle of the afternoon and that the quality of the sounds (big praise for the studio engineers) and playing were master take record-worthy. It was just damn encouraging to hear true quality in this day and age. warwickhunt
The only band I've seen on Jools for a long time that has made me sit up, take notice and actually get off my backside to see where they are playing near Newcastle... Nowhere! LOL
NancyJohnson
If you search hard [on Youtube], you'll turn up some footage of them live in a record store about seven or eight months back, playing to a couple of people and a small girl, while shoppers were browsing the racks. Now they've got a number one album. I bought it the album and it's a good collection of tunes...even though my usual fair is a darn site heavier, I'd happily recommend the CD to anyone. LOL
I most definitely agree with you on that, apart from seeing if they're playing near Newcastle...as I live in the south west it'd be a bit of a trek Thought they were brilliant in every way. Oldman
I saw them and it did remind of Janis Joplin "Blues Shouter", I downloaded the album yesterday from iTunes. On that particular programme in a wilderness of dull music they shone.

krazy_olie
Got taken to a gig of theirs a couple months ago, was a lot of fun! Jarvis cocker was there too...
Balcro
Nah, can't agree. The voice was Ok until the artificial soul-scream, which if nothing else helped to put over the song as different. Oooh, that grimacing bass player! Concentrating hard on the 3 notes he played, or was it 4. One man's meat I suppose. Balcro.

Personally I thought what the bass player played was pretty perfect, he appeared to be enjoying the overall groove too. But as you said, "one mans meat, etc."

Norris
Either he was getting into the groove, or was having difficulties with his denture fixative. I thought they were great. I missed most of the other 'turns', but was glad I caught the Shakes.
Austin7
I don't know the Alabama Shakes personally, but I'm familiar with that area. In fact, I noticed that studio where they recorded their first demo was the same studio where some friends and I recorded a demo in 2008. I'm impressed with them. stoker
I could have sworn the P-bass mute was one of those foam washing up sponges. Great band too.
