Of course Fender wouldn't be missing a trick. The beauty of the range is there is a reason to celebrate something every year! Like 12stringbassist I too have a 60th Anniversary P-bass but we must remember this is the 60th Anniversary of the Fender company and this thread is of course referring to the 60th Anniversary of the 1951 Fender Precision Bass so think chunky goodness and we're there!

This sounds very interesting, I must say. I've had a wee hankering for a '51 reissue for a few years - one was on ebay a couple of years ago that went for £275 & the price seems to have gone up since then for used ones especially since you can't buy them new. ( unless you want the "King of Pain" signature :) If the std is as high as (some)folks are saying for the Jazz & Precision USA Stds then this could well be worth waiting/saving for.

Look forward to reading/seeing/hearing more details.

Yeah I saw that earlier on the Fender site, didn't realise it was that new :)

My first thoughts were - why a split pickup & why the big head? Then I thought no, that make's it a bit different different so why not!

If I knew - "Every P Bass built in 2011 will be outfitted with the anniversary neck plate as well" I might have waited to buy my '57 American Vintage :)

Never mind, another one on the wish list

Cheerz, John
i think it is a masterbuilt custom shop bass, probably very well built using premium woods and other materials

is it worth it?

beauty is in the eye of the beholder
Yes I concurr, trouble is... you see, it's difficult to find a justifyable reason to purchase this bass. The Japan reissue 51 which just got discontinued, you just couldn't fault, it was made with the exact period correct materials, ash body, maple neck, same machine heads and bridge, and probably the same pickup that will go into the master built custom shop one, I cannot even contemplate what improvement could be done to that design to make it so expensive. After all it's still only a single coil 1 pickup bass in a position that will only give you one sound and no harmonics due to its position.

The 'blonde' Japanese RI was a hideous colour - that's the only thing that let it down.
