For those Of Us Who have To Audition, Do You Ask The Right Questions?
Muppet replied to blue's topic in General Discussion
I would do my research on the band and dress appropriately. They see you before they hear you and they'll already have an opinion before you play a note. Saying that I wouldn't audition for a band where I felt the presentation was outside of my comfort zone. -
The way I do it (and this is not scientific by any means) is to set the gain to max, and sweep the frequency from high to low to find a sound I'm interested in or one that is causing me trouble. Then I experiment by backing the gain right off at that frequency to see what that does. Hopefully after a few experiments I find the right frequency and the right gain levels.

As above, I would disconnect the tweeter completely and route the amp input straight to the speaker bypassing the crossover and tweeter. This puts full signal to the speaker and sounds great to me. If you still need more top end then consider the tweeter replacement...

I've stopped going to bigger festivals as they're all much of a muchness now and even Glastonbury has succumbed to the commercialism and middle-of-the-road lineups that you see at V festival, T in the Park, Isle of Wight etc. There are so many smaller excellent well run festivals now that are not over run with hen and stag parties, and offer superb choices of music so I stick to these now. I do fear for my local one - Secret Garden Party, however, that it will end being a victim of its own success.

I was in a similar situation. I bought a new Markbass CMD121P then a matching second hand NY121 cab when funds permitted. Came in pretty much around your budget. Sounds great, is portable and gives the flexibility of one cab or two.

What do you listen to on the way home from a gig~
Muppet replied to Japhet's topic in General Discussion
I switch to Classic FM. Just calms everything down! -
The killers - Jenny was a friend of mine 'cover'
Muppet replied to Andrej's topic in Share Your Music
I can see (or hear) the recording's a bit ropey, but the song itself sounds really good. With the right singer that would easily be good enough to gig. Nice one. -
Have you turned it off and left it off for a while? There may be a protection circuit that has kicked in.
Ran my J5 passive last night...and that made me think of Lakland DJ5's again.. Think I'd like a Blue one with RW..??
Like this but with an extra string?

Hi Gareth If you are using the preamp as a switch box are you wanting to use all the MXR boxes with all your basses? If so, wouldn't your bass station need to be first? I'd go Providence, compressor, overdrive, octave and see how it sounds, then experiment with compressor placement. Cheers Steve

The OP has already said he can get the guitar to play beautifully so it's not a setup that he needs, it's just a technical question he has. I would say it depends on the guitar obviously but I've never actually given more than a full turn in total, though I wouldn't have known the starting point. I would have thought the adverse effect on the neck would be apparent way before you ran out of turns, assuming it's not stripped... I would avoid the return to midpoint and reset process though. That suggests unnecessary strain on the wood to me, for no real gain if the guitar played well when you took the old strings off.

Is it definitely the string slipping or is the tuner post itself slipping? If it's happening with different makes of strings on the same post I wouls start to look at the tuner mechanism....

I think the scene is changing but not dying. The gigs are still out there, but the bands have to do the work to get them. The good bands will get them and can be picky about those that they choose. But the bands have to work hard to be good, to target the right market with their music, maybe be prepared to go further afield AND be prepared to shoulder some of the responsibility for promoting themselves and the gig. And that doesn’t mean just sending out a Facebook invitation and a link to some Soundcloud recordings and expecting the venue to do the rest. The internet has made us lazy…. I know some bands in my area (both covers and originals) that have put a lot of work in (and continue to do so) and are reaping the rewards.

I can confirm that there is bracing and damping inside the BG250-115 and I find it plenty loud enough. I certainly wouldn't replace mine with a Player's School – it’s 150w at 8 ohm I believe and 250w at 4 ohm. I’ve tried one and it sounds pretty good but still only good enough really for practice. There’s a Markbass CMD151P for sale in the marketplace – that’s what I would go for.

The thin plastic binders that you put A4 paper in - the flimsy ones with a clear front and a coloured back, not a hard binder - the backs make excellent shims if you cut out the right shape.

I used to have to programmable Bass Driver DI a few years ago and sold it because I really couldn't get on with it. I've recently bought a VT DI and to be honest im having similar issues and I'm not as blown away with it as I'd hoped. I'm sticking with it for the moment but I don't think its this Holy Ampeg Grail that it's pitched as..it could be me though..... Steve

Showcases used to be (and maybe still are) five bands minimum where you all turn up early with your gear, sit round for ages until sound engineer turns up, four of five bands don't have a bass amp, three bands get a crap sound check and you play to the other bands and a few friends with numbers decreasing as it gets closer to midnight. Some are even worse if you have to sell tickets in advance. I'd suggest they are taking advance of your band being quite new. Sorry for the cynical response but for the bands it's often a huge expense with nothing in return other than the band saying on their facebook page 'we've played xxx in London'

Lost dogs - basses you wish you could buy back... Have you got it now?
Muppet replied to Chiliwailer's topic in Bass Guitars
At the time I didn't need my lost dog and it never got played, as it didn't suit the bands I was in. Now I'm doing a lot of different stuff and would like a Stingray back in my collection. To be honest, any good Stingray would probably do, but knowing I had a good one at the time and let it go makes me want it back. Unlikely it's gonna happen though! -
Well you might not be getting the benefit of the full sound of the amp, though your band mates might and any audience I'm sure would. You've a great combo there so I'm sure with a few minor tweaks you'll be satisfied, might just be a little trial and error to get there. Stick with it. Im not saying don't get a 1 x15 but it's another big box to carry around if you don't need it.
-
That's a really good combo, I love the Evo III is it the MAG or the ABM? Even with ear bleeding punk it should keep up. You're not standing too close to it are you? Steve
-
Also, I added a ABM 1x15 to mine and ended up not using it, as it turned out too boomy. These were the ABM cabs from about 10-12 years ago that I always thought were excellent on their own.

Not sure what head you have but turn off compression, sub harmonics, bright and deep and overdrive, set EQ flat and set the gain where the VU meter just goes to the red section (assuming it's still working). Set your bass tone controls flat and then get your band involved whilst you make small adjustments. Often a little goes a long way. If you've got good band mates they'll be more than happy to help you get a good sound. I wouldn't bother with the extension cab right now, the 410 should be pretty loud! I found that with mine, using the deep and sub harmonics seemed to rob the tone of it's punch and perceived volume which might be what you're experiencing? Cheers Steve

Should I be nervous about a NBD tomorrow? Now a modded NBD!!
Muppet replied to Wilco's topic in Bass Guitars
You get great examples and bad examples of many models, regardless of the 'origin'. If you like it and you feel you have value for money then it doesn't matter whether it's from China, Korea, Mexico wherever. You can send it back so no risk! Steve -
I have the MD421 and its great but pricey. Has a really really annoying stand clip though!
-
Good stuff. What did your band members think afterwards? I also have this and with the extension cab it's quite formidable for its size. Steve
