If the speaker has blown it would fart. It's more likely that a fuse has blown somewhere between the amp and the speaker. Some speaker cabs have a little bulb (you can sometimes see them lighting up the inside of your speaker cab) which will blow to protect your speaker. I would do some googling on an Ampeg forum and get the screw driver out to search for fuses, either on the board, or between amp and speaker, if I were you.

I once bought an Allparts Jazz bass neck and it was very chunky, front to back, compared to a normal Jazz neck.. I assume thier P bass necks are even chunkier.

I used to have 7 electrics and a double bass. I now have 2 basses (that is if you don't count the ones in bits). A Jazz, with a J retro, plus a P bass for emergencies is all I really need.

My brother in law has fronted many bands as a singer and guitarist. He says his favourite type of bass player, is the one he doesn't hear. He tends to play with a lot of dep bassist though. So has low expectations. As long as they don't muck it up too badly,he's happy.

I recently bought one from BC. It gets my seal of approval. They are mighty loud.

I use a GK MB500 through a gen 1 barefaced. I have the gain at 12 o'clock and the master at 9 o'clock (6 o'clock is off on a GK). At that volume it could drown out a reasonably loud drummer. There must be something else going on with your band sound? I have a john east retro and boost the low mid, which may help me cut through the mix.

A performance is all about attitude and whether or not you have a decent sound person mixing the sound. The BBC sound guys are notoriously bad at mixing live sound. I notice that you have a GK MB500. I recently bought one to use with my BF compact and it's a great loud and punchy combination.

They've dyed their beards ginger. Drummer can play a mean boogie.

Most of the time you are at the mercy of the sound guy, whether you go straight through a DI box or go post EQ on your amp. If you like the 'front of house sound' you have (if you ever get the chance to hear it from the stalls) there's no point worrying about post or pre EQ really.

Turn off your neck pickup and use just the Jazz pickup at the bridge with the bass turned up high. You'll get that punchy, in your face, upfront sound.

How about a pre amp between the bass and your Ashdown. Something like a Behringer BD21, which has a level control which would decease the signal going to your amp. That would do the trick. BD21s are very cheap and are great little pre amps but any pedal with a level control should sort your problem out.
