How to make your bass sound better - Play it.
gjones replied to BassApprentice's topic in Bass Guitars
A bass that sounds good acoustically, tends to sound good amplified. That's what I've noticed with my own basses (I have 12). My favourite bass is a mix and match Fender Jazz, that I put together from Japanese parts. It's very loud and resonant, when played acoustically. Time may have an effect on the wood of an instrument. But I think a guitar can also sound great, brand new and straight out of the box, like my 2017 Precision. -
Mamas Gun, who are a London Soul band. They're so, so, good.

The one in my local rehearsal room sounds great in the mix, with the band. I own a MiBass 550 and an ABM Evo III and would definitely consider buying one of these. But I'll wait until gigs start again, if they ever do, before I spend any dosh,

I thought the Super Compact would be a one cab solution but I found out, with a 550w amp, at 4 ohms, it has a difficulty keeping up with a loud drummer. I ended up upgrading to an 800w amp, which made a difference. In the end I just went back to my old Barefaced Compact 1x15, which is more than able to be loud enough in all band situations.

Not sure if I can be bothered to go back to gigging

Even in Scotland, where the new infection rate is now very low, I wouldn't want to play in a crowded bar. But, it's not an option at the moment, I doubt venues will be allowed to have loud music for a few months yet. -

I play in 3 bands, The first one is a pretty, pro quality, gigging band. The other two bands I'm in, talk about gigging, but I don't know if their hearts are in it. I enjoy rehearsing but I do love gigging in a band with good confident players. Some musicians only come alive when they're onstage. There is a great exchange of energy at a gig between band and audience, full of sweaty punters, having a good time. -

I suppose if you have an iffy band, or don't get on with your bandmates, this enforced break might feel like a good thing. But I like my bandmates and the music we play and am desperate to get back to playing (when it's safe/safer to do so). -
I do like a sunburst and maple neck on a Stingray.

Limiting the Length of Threads/Adding new Categories
gjones replied to Chienmortbb's question in Site Issues and Questions
I think this threads gone on too long. -
Best Precision sound I ever got, was out of one of these. Our band supported a Ska band whose bassist owned one that he let me play through. It was pretty loud as well. It was only a couple of years ago and was a vintage combo but sounded great. The sound engineer commented on the sound as well. I loved it but I didn't try to pick it up. They're darned heavy wee things, or so I've been told

I have more than enough amps and cabs and more basses than a man should ever need. But it doesn't stop me lurking on Basschat and Ebay. The only thing I now lust after, is a sonic blue Jazz bass. It would be cheaper to just get a refinish on one of my other Jazzes than buy one new, or secondhand. Which would be the sensible thing to do. But still I lurk.

I need a nut filed, I'll try what you suggest and report back.

Looks and sound great.

'Karma to Burn', the live album by the Waterboys, has Steve Walters on bass. He plays Jazz Bass on it (previous bassists have mostly played P basses with the band). And he adds a slicker, improvisational approach to many of the songs. He and the drummer on the album, Carlos Hercules, previously played with George Michael. This is the first track, somebody is slightly out of tune, It may be Steve?

The different size magnets seem to be correct on that pickup, according to the picture on this website. If it they aren't fit for purpose send them back. https://stratosphereparts.com/new-wilkinson-wojb-ceramic-for-fender-jazz-bass-pickup-set-pickups/

Budget basses that are way better than their prices suggest
gjones replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
I hadn't paid, over the years, more than about £600 secondhand for a bass, until recently. What I found, when I did splash the cash, is that although an expensive bass (ie in the area £2000) is nice to have, you don't get that much more for your money. I know many bassist who play cheapish basses, who get a great sound out of them. Edit: I'd recommend investing money on amps and cabs, before spending on expensive basses. A cheap bass through good gear, will sound better than an expensive bass through bad/cheap gear. -

I envy you. I'd love a rehearsal and I wouldn't care if it was $hite. 😄 -
Two North Korean Ladies playing a bass duet
gjones replied to Jean-Luc Pickguard's topic in General Discussion
Why can't all TV be like this? Well I suppose it is, in North Korea..... -
The rehearsal room I used to rehearse in, before the lockdown, had one of the original RM500s through an Ashdown 410. It sounded great with a precision. I brought my Ashdown ABM EVO III in, to make a comparison and the RM 500 was at least as authoritative as the ABM and just as loud. I think the technical term for the RM 500 is that it, 'kicks a$$'. It's a great amp if you like the Ashdown sound.

I broke my oath and bought a MIM 70's reissue a few weeks ago. It is a lovely bass but with this Covid-19 situation I am not very optimistic that I'll ever get to play it on stage.

My opinion has changed over the 4 years since I wrote that post. Now I think a preamp pedal would be a better option, because then you could get your musicman to sound like a Jazz Bass
