I had the same with my Fender TV15 which had a tube pre amp. I couldn't get it to break up because the output on my Jazz wasn't hot enough.

Looking at that comment in context, he's saying that he finds bass guitar is difficult to record well. That's because the guitars are so bass heavy, in the metal genre, that bass guitar disappears in the mix. I assume that the guitarists he works with are not prepared to compromise on their 'sound' and take up less of the sonic spectrum.

Ashdown EB combos are cheap and loud.

Advice please large rehearsal studio - combos to replace Ampeg
gjones replied to stringers's topic in General Discussion
The only time my heart sinks, when I go into a rehearsal room, is when there's a trace elliot amp in there. I can never get a decent sound from them. When I play at festivals, I've noticed that the amps the PA company usually supply are either Ampeg or Hartke. I would go for Hartke if I were you, mainly because I can always get a good clear sound from the HA series amps without too much messing around. I'd keep away from the Hydrive combos as they're a bit underpowered. -
This might help. Of course there'll be a mark up on these basses so bear that in mind. http://www.andybaxterbass.com/guitars.php?cat=1

Jazz bass with a Fantastic description!!!!!
gjones replied to 2x18's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I've seen people bid on so many obviously, crooked, bass auctions but it they bid on this one then they truly deserve everything they get. -
This would knock your drummer of his stool http://basschat.co.uk/topic/221536-genz-stm900-l359-ono/

Yes in good condition £400. I bought one for around that price via basschat a couple of years ago.

It depends on the level of gig you're doing. If it's a pub gig in front of half a dozen drunks and you're getting £100 and a couple of free pints, it's ok. If it's a wedding or a corporate gig, then I doubt you'd be asked back if that was the bands attitude. I've played with bands as a dep where the songs sound nothing like the originals (sometimes because they're not even playing the correct chords). I personally think that if you're going to play music it should sound like you've put (at the least) a bit of effort into the end product.

Buy yourself a set of Fender black ones.
I didn't think so - my shock was imagining what you must have been thinking before you could confirm it after seeing the news story.
Time stood still for a few seconds until I read the whole story.

Maybe the assistant MD read this interview with Boz Burrell, Bad Company's bass player. BB: [pauses] No. Not really. No. I’m not a retrospective sort of person. I don’t really go back and delve. I sometimes hear something, like “Can’t Get Enough” and think, “Jesus. I should never have played a fretless bass on that. The pitch is so out of tune.” So I can only look at something as a piece of work, if you know what I mean. Not as something I did or didn’t enjoy. I just listen to it and go, “Ooh, sh*t.” BM: That fretless bass. Yeah. I remember seeing pictures of you in <i>Circus</i> Magazine back then playing that fretless bass. That looked really difficult. Did you think so, or was it easy to play? BB: Oh, well, that’s a story, that is. That comes down to that was Esther Philips’ bass player. A New York guy. What was his name? It’s gone out of my head. Hmm. Gordon Edwards! The bass player. Used to have this lovely style which I used to try and emulate it. It always sounded like a fretless bass, so I went and bought myself a fretless. It wasn’t until about four years later that I met him and he said, “No, I never played a fretless in my life.” [laughs] BB: [laughs] I thought, “sh*t!” He never played one! It was just the way he played a fretted one. [laughs]

Yes I saw this story. My niece is over in the states at this very moment recording her first album with her band Honeyblood. She told me she was out on the town in Williamsburg Brooklyn, with her drummer, as she had the weekend off. Then I wake this morning to read about a massacre of musicians in Williamsburg! I just about choked on my muesli!

If you're going to fake something, why fake a silver series squier? He'd be better off sanding the silver series decal off and pretending it was a MIJ Fender.
My brother in law has a 4001, I've used it a lot. I find it very comfortable to play and can get the action crazy-low, however I can never get a sound I like from it. It's either wooly, or twangy. It doesn't seem to be able to do that right in the mix, kick-drum frequency that you get from a P bass.
+1 Unless you're into Chris Squier clank or like a woolly indistinct sound don't even bother.
£40 and just a speaker connection to fix? If it really was that easy to fix (IMHO) it would be fixed and command a much higher price... if it is too good to be true!
A lot of people are scared to get the screwdriver out and have a look. If his extension speaker works ok with it, then it should be just a wiring issue or a blown speaker. I do recommend anybody going to pick it up has a listen to the amp through the extension speaker though. Just in case.
-
It'll be a pretty simple fix. Worst case scenario is a new speaker which is easy to fit. I replaced mine and fitted a speakon while I was at it. It took about an hour of my time. By the way there's a guy selling a couple of eminence deltas 15" for £70 on basschat if you need one.

I'm the same. I've found changing necks has a bigger impact on the sound than changing pickups sometimes. The first neck I swapped was on my Geddy Lee . I always felt it sounded very 'bass lite'. I assumed it was because of the pickups but before I swopped them for another set, I decided to change the ultra thin neck that was fitted for a chunky Allparts neck I had hanging around. The swop really made a big difference to the sound and gave the bass a much rounder deeper tone. Since then I can't stop myself experimenting with different combinations on my basses. At the moment I have a maple P neck on my Jazz and a rosewood Jazz neck on my P bass. Mainly because the extra wood in the P bass neck, when fitted to the Jazz really gives a boost in the bass frequencies which I really like.

The bass player has got 6 strings, so the guitarist has to have 8. http://www.dprp.net/concrev/2012_notp_1/haken3.jpg

American or Mexican made new model Fender Jazz?
gjones replied to Mr Fretbuzz's topic in General Discussion
SOLD :-) Ordered one but ordered the Vintage covers and thumb rest too....... cheap 60s vintage bass :-) £1100 less than the American 63 Vintage but perhaps will look and sound similar....
If you like jazzes, I don't think you can go wrong with it. It's a good un. Better to get a top of the range Mex bass (which the classic 60's is) than a bottom of the range USA. The Geddy Lee basses and Marcus Millers are now made in Mexico. Up until recently they were made in Japan. And the quality hasn't suffered. -
Bizarrely, having decided to sell my Compact, I was complimented on my tone last night at rehearsal - by the SINGER!!! He said what a "lovely, rich" sound I was getting! Maybe I should keep it after all? Too late as I've already ordered one of the Genz Benz neo 212s...
I'm interested in your reasons for replacing your compact with a GB neo 212 (other than the fact that they're going cheap at the moment)? I hear great things about compacts.
Here's mine. Such a lovely bass. I'm feeling blessed to have it.
I notice your auction has ended on the 'Bay'. I was hoping you'd have second thoughts. That bass and you were obviously meant for one another. -
Changing neck woods? How much does this affect the sound?
gjones replied to erisu's topic in Bass Guitars
I've swopped the necks around on my basses a lot and it does change the sound quite radically. The rule is, the more wood on the neck the deeper the sound. I recently changed the neck on my Jazz from a very slim Mighty Mite Jazz neck to a very chunky Precision neck. The sound got significantly beefier as a result.
