1. Hardly new, he has been with them years and years. But one of my fave bass players atm
2. Having had a stack topple over, this is one reason why I never would stack vertically. If 2 cabs stack to waist height then that is enough for me to hear perfectly with 2x112 and definitely 2x210's. Dispersion isn't factor either. If you are going for a TKS cab you'll hear the definition unless you use stupid bass sounds and then no cab is really going to help you, IMV. Stability can be an issue unless you always play well built stages.... and since we probably don't, uneven floors or flexing bouncey floors can be an accident waiting to happen. When my amp and cab went over under power, not only did the amp need repairing, so did both speakers. That was an expensive episode ..so I'm not risking repeating it.
3.
in some cases it is to get a lower impedence and get the full power from the amp, i know mine works that way
Wasn't talking about it being an impedence issue tho... My answer related to the sound issue.
4.
Positive mental attitude is really important when facing health challenges, overdoing it too soon because you don't want to let people down could be totally counterproductive. Invasive abdominal surgery can really mess up your core support, so please don't be tempted to pump yourself full of pain killers and play standing up, or with your bass on a strap - play sitting down on a chair with the weight of your bass supported on your lap and don't try to be a hero. If you can't manage to play sitting down like this without altering your painkiller dosage, you shouldn't be doing the gig - good health is priceless, and post op complications for abdominal surgeries can be very serious, so FFS talk to your doctor/surgeon and accept their advice, in the worst case a couple of cancelled gigs won't damage anyones health.
This.....definitely.
5.
....I feel your pain. Why is it that the songs that the punters constantly demand are the ones that I hate playing the most??
It is not that it is such a poor song, it isn't, but every bloody band does it and that is the main reason to avoid it like the plague, IMO. We resisted it for ages and ages and only brought it out for a function or party. We wont play it in pubs.
6.
What do you start with?
Good souls by Starsailor or Come together...both or which can be really powerful. The other choice will be 'Grounds for Divorce' which I feel hasn't got the same impact, for us.
7.
It's always worth looking at what's available secondhand.
Indeed, there is a MB 15" there atm..I believe
8. Difficult to say, as we tend to start very well from the start and am sometimes gratefully surprised that the first numbers gets such a reception... but I'd probably have to say 'Fooled again' or what ever number of that ilk that we finish with..
9.
Try telling him that you don't understand why anyone would want an old bass back and I am sure he would change your mind.
Unlikely..... I'd probably be thinking he doesn't know what he is doing and so he defaults to what he thinks he knows... Tell me what the bass is and there might be one or two genuine mistakes, but if they sold it in the 70's they would have sold it for pennies... I sold a 75 Jazz for £250 and it would be worth £1600 today in some ones mind...but if you think I'd pay that for that dog of dogs, IMO..you must be barking..
10. For Ampeg tone, I'd put a PF500 on top of 2 TKS s112's if you can drive the input stage of the PF hard...as in with a pick..?? and engage the bass boost. This will induce a nice 12" break-up at gig volumes. Not a fan of pedals myself for simulating grind, but it's there as an option. This will be a quality lightweight cab rig capable of loud gigs and very lightweight..and the bonus, for me, is that the chassis are still ceramic.
11.
I hope this isn't a situation where the OP is the only band member that sees "red flags" all over this and the other member are all wearing rose tinted glasses. Maybe all young bands have to go through this as a part of the learning curve for this business. Blue
Yes, they do, we've all done this in our early 20's and I recall places like the Mean Fiddler, the Orange club and Ronnies' Scotts all having variations..but I also recall getting petrol exes if nothing else, but we were not talking 2 days on the road from Scotland..?? If you are not local to the gig and scene, then ask yourself just this one question, does the gig sound like they have your good interests at heart...and a dive-hole upstairs room in a pub is not something that would convince me..by far. A few posters have more pertinent local knowledge or insight here and I'd be asking for the names of other bands that have done it recently and then contact them for first hand head-s up. Surely a creditable enterprise would be able to provide some sort of credentials or track record and I'd want to talk to those people without such a close involvement or interest. I think you'd do better getting an agent or presence with Colleges and Unis' as they can pay and try to do things more 'right'.. The thing is this learning curve has likely been 'learnt' by quite a few here and they are trying to save the guys money and effort. This sort of trip could break a band, IMO..
12. J5, P-bass neck, 34" Bolt-on. Single coils, active. The neck is most important so I prefer it shallow for a 5. Basically it is going to be a very decent take on a Fender J..ie, better than Fender themselves would build
13. The cynic would say this is a low cost way to fill up a pub venue in a poor evening .......which is one thing, but the other is as above..London is a terrible place to get gear to because of the parking etc etc and the congestion charge and you;ll understand why everyone uses public transport and borrows gear... Work out how much it will cost you and how much you'll make from it... and how many people you'll play to. FWIW, I wouldn't be playing London for less than £1500 and that sort of money is available for themed/original bands in the Uni's...but no where else for an unknown band, IMO. Look at it VERY carefully...
14. Oh, I've had some dogs...well, relatively, but I think I learnt pretty quickly what I wanted in a bass so they got less doggy after each one. I also don't tend to change what I do for the gig... so don't need loads of different basses to do it. I've done 'modern'...and have no plans to go back to it. I guess it depend if you think you know what you want and are doing..? I get an onward and upward curve and that is what Gas is for but not a u-turn?
15. I wouldn't buy a cheaper line bass blind myself as I'd think they could be so variable..but if you are going to mod it mercilessly, then less of an issue... as the only two things that need as the neck and body.. but then I've not been convinced they get this right anyway..
16. I don't really get people who mourn a sale of a bass.. If it was that good then why sell it in the first place..?
17. I think the two cabs together would be rated at 500w so you'd need to baby them if you run FX's IMO..potentially
18. If money is tight then I would just set up the cab where I knew how it worked and at what sort of level on the dials.. and I find I never need to go much about it as it is just too loud. If you are running acoustic drums this is pretty easy to do and then that becomes the maximum level rather than 10 on the master/gain. If you cab handles this with just a little in hand, then you'll be fine.. What doesn't help is any extra that can boost the signal chain..like pedals.. What makes you think the cab is struggling...?
19.
Here's a Ken Smith beaut' just in at Bass Direct... if you want to try one out... The demo is awful BTW... https://www.youtube....h?v=sc_66DokP5M
Not joking..!!!!
20. To use those 2 cabs you'll need a 'better' amp than a LM ll Better to use the Pro 7 if you like the sound...IMO
21. IMO, it is a stage issue rather than anything else..
22. Any reason for wanting 'real lows'?
23. JTUK

Amazing venue

Many old churches are being used as alternative venues but the sound in them is not generally kind to bands so volume is key... Forget any loud acts completely
24. I've played both types and I think the Smith will win hands down. More appealing to a wider band of people..should you want to sell, and a very distinctive sound that only a Smith can do....... I'm sure both will be good basses but the kudos also goes to the Smith...IMO.
25. I used a WT800 and 212 and 210 and that was a monster of a rig. I think you need to hear it, for sure.
