1.
I suspect some classic cabinets would probably be sub-optimal when subjected to computer aided design - I am particularly thinking of the Acoustic 360 that I once owned. .................
The 360 is a 40 plus year old cab and even back then I don't recall them being usable without a 412 linked up..? Certainly the one I had in the late 80's needed something like that.
2. Search out 'the chicken' by Jaco for a good intro on this
3. I use Newtone and they aren't the most zingy from new, but they keep that sound longest, IME. I can keep them for 6 weeks plus... and I'll play the bass every day. I keep the strings clean, but not overly zealous about it, but common sense things like clean hands etc. Also, the string clean up and I may get upto 5 uses out of them so I tend to buy a pack of 3 once a year. I'll change the strings when they feel off before they sound off.. I came over from DR as I don't believe they use the best metal anymore and have had a few too many duff experiences...which they certainly didn't suffer from a few years ago. IME, of course.
4. Apart from the fun of knocking up this box... what does anyone hope to achieve and where and for what would it be used for, that is even if it ever gets fired up in anger?
5. Tab is completely useless unless you know the song.. but I guess you can assume all notes are 4's...but that might get you into as much trouble..!!!! In that respect a chord chart is better as that is the lenght of time you play the designated chord. But unless you read, it is all degrees of guesswork..
6. Will have to pop over and see you Harry... that is a beaut.
7.
is age a factor in this or is it just how good you play and how nice you are?(and of course all the other factors above)
Not really, playing trumps all... that is if the booker isn't a bass player:lol: Of course, you can't be an ar$ehole but if you are really top notch, maybe some will even get away with that..
8.
I think you also have to consider the venue and size of the crowd. Fronting to 60 people in a small bar might be different than 2,000 at an outdoor festival. Blue
This is pretty defining, I'd say. If someone is a great singer and a great frontman, he isn't going to be doing mostly pub dates as those guys are gold dust and will be nicked by another band who can offer better gigs. The guy will be worth his weight and will propel the band forward.. charisma alone will do that, so the ability to sing really well as well and the guy will be in top demand, IMO.
9. I know plenty of fine singers, IMO, and a few good front men, but to get one who can do both is very rare, IMO. Personally, I'll settle for the best singer, but there are one or two who can hold an audience. The biggest 'star' I've come across recently is actually a drummer. He has real personality, and the audience loves him. He is a superb player as well.
10. Since it is the BBC, I'd be open to do it as at least they should do things properly and professionally. If nothing else, a learning curve and a chance to meet people in a pro environment. Anything else is a bonus.
11. The ABM bridge is fully adjustable, I have mine set up for a wider setting...would be easy to close it down a bit. I would suggest a Lakland is a bit bigger all round as a bass. I don't find that a problem if jumping on one but I'd have to work on it if my mainstay bass.
12. No easy answer to this as no one really knows what sound you start from...but the easiest to EQ is fingers, typically, so I'd keep that sound as the default sound and compromise when playing fingers. Not really compatible but I think you are going to have to concentrate on getting the amount of bass EQ down on the pick. It is only really something that you can work thru....so bring the two sounds close and workable without a mass of adjustment between the two each time.
13. I would say that we are quite picky about the gigs we do.... so the gigs we do are in places that we'd like to go to and the acid test is generally, is the place somewhere that your partner is happy and comfortable to go to? And that in turn extends to places that our friends would go to.
14.
I'm still interested...but... String spacing at bridge? Weight? And for bonus points... Width of neck at nut? Width at neck 24th fret? Thanks again Pete
Might be speaking out of turn here so apologies if so, but that looks like an ABM bridge which is means the bridge spacing is Fender like, so around 19mm, I'd say. Also the neck looks like a P-Bass nut as opposed to Jazz neck dims.. This makes is very comfortable for space IMV, and compatible if you come from Fender type basses and spacings. I have 2 Sei J5's and the are pretty roomy for playing..and I would certainly say the ease of playing is not squeezed. If I was changing over from a Fender 4, for example, this set-up and config is as close as you'll get, IMO. from a playing POV.

My feeling is that altho you really want bands to be the draw, you yourself might be in a situation where you could do with some support, so I generally go to venues that give me work... and I also try and sell it as a place I kind of believe in. And I also go and see my friends bands.even if I don't especially rate them and I hope they'll do the same for me. Too often people will rant about supporting a scene but you wont see them at many gigs ...and most towns will have this sort of local musical mafia which is a bit ridiculous. Unfortunately a lot of musicians are pretty insecure, so they'll not go and see their contempories if that band is better. oh well.. If you are doing pubs, you may luck out and have a great night and then for some reason, the next time is not as good... these are the times when everyone could help themselves and support the venue and bands... 16.
Summerfest here in Milwaukee treats non- headliners very well. You get security, a van picks up the band and your taken to the stage and a second van is provided for your guitars and accessories. You work with pro stage managers as well as pro sound guys. Nice big dressing rooms with food and drink too. Blue
That sounds like a well run show..
17.
Out of interest, was price the deciding factor in the end?
No... I already had Berg cabs at the time. I wont say it wasn't a factor at all, but I didn't have to sell the Bergs, and if the top cabs, from my POV had have been one of the others on the test, I would have bought them. I hear something in the TKS cabs that I can really use...and it sets them apart, IMO.
18. Must admit, I thought this would be a hopeless waste of time, albeit a good fun one, maybe, but the above advice from BFM puts it into perspective. Good luck with it tho... and good luck moving it, but as a tool for bass, no, I can't see it, tbh.
19. Get known for being able to cover the gig..and that means you need to know as many songs and styles as possible. Blues bands don't want a funk player, for example, but they'll like a PLAYER that makes the rest of the band sound good with little or no prep. So crossover with styles as well as a whole host of tunes. You don't pick the set, the gig does, so you'll need a method of playing the songs well, quickly. Either read it, if the band has parts, but you'll more likely need good ears and good feel and be busking from basic chord charts. Good gear and sound is a given. You just need to get to a place where you are comfortable in most situations and can play most things.
20. Sounds fair... I think FB has a presense on this story in the area. I think a better ID of the person would be helpful.. so if the police have been involved, they must know his name..?
21. Take a spare... until you have your confidence restored.
22. You must have a name of the guy.... and they police must have his details if they've talked to him..? therefore it shouldn't be hard to track him down. This guy didn't just appear at the audition, so if his details are false, the 'crime' is intended and premeditated and if they are true you'll catch up with him at some point. You pretty much know what he did, so ...??
23. If you post a FB link I'll get it shared. Or summarise the story/events I'll do the same
24.
Bad Influence are great, all top musicians with Pete Stroud (Mybass on here) on bass usually.
He wasn't on the gig as they used local guys... presumably to keep the money in check.
25. Where are we on this? And what area of Kent, as you could FB it ... in a general way as there are plenty of gig/muso sites where this sort on info would be useful. You don't have to actually name him on FB but you could let ppl know by message if they asked.. Even if you just left it as a general incident, at least people might be forewarned..?? If it was in an area near me, I'd share it with a few musical FB groups...
