Arghh Markbass 210 or 410 as extension to Lm3+102
JTUK replied to citymariner's topic in Amps and Cabs
Match the 210 cab if it works so well. No question -
If the bass doesn't cut it and you are happy with the tone stack elsewhere, sell that bass.
I must admit that though I like the both pickups on Jazz sound, it never sounds beefy to me. More like articulate and musical. I`ve found the best way to get oommph from a Jazz is neck pickup on full, up the mids and lower the highs. Then add a slight bit bit of bridge pickup to give some clarity/bite.
And try and emulate a P...???

We'll take an hour to set up and an hour for sound. If it is right before that time, then fine, but the target is to be clear by a certain time and that is at least 2hrs from when are set to arrive. That is always the plan.

Top 3 bass shop tryout riffs - they're looking at you and waiting!
JTUK replied to lowdowner's topic in General Discussion
Why would you play anyone's bass lines at all..?? I just noodle with things that I've come up with and I'll be trying to the bass to sound like it could handle the sounds within the styles that I hear and play. I kind of laugh when I hear someone playing a standard bassline, tbh.. -
I'm thinking any useful kick is beyond most 12" P,A cabs...
Thanks for that chaps...all of you, but would you class them as full range, and would you consider a bit of bass drum thru them, or is that a no no.....
If you wanted kick then maybe 15's would be a better start point. I think the PV's will be typically robust enough but I think kick will impact on the vocal delivery too much and tbh, you aren't starting from a great sound POV in the first place. Having said that, we ran kick well into QSC KW112's but then again, they are apples and oranges. What is attractive about these PV's to you.... the price, capability..? If price, then you are probably getting a well used ( abused?? ) pair of cabinets and you'll take your chances. If you go ahead, then maybe a kick test should be part of your buying guide/demo
Goes with the territory. When asked to turn down by a venue owner you turn down. It's not worth it to put to much thought into it and take the fun out of the gig. Blue
It actually is worth it, IMO, as there is turning down to reasonable levels and then there is stupid reasoning as appears to be the case from the description from the OP They don't pay me enough to pander to ruining the gig ( for us as much as anyone else ) and I'm not desperate to want any repeat business from a venue that will gladly take the money but not be willing or able to be good on its delivery. In this case, I'll make sure the client is happy over and above the venue manager. In the event of noise management devices at venues, we've refused to play them if we know the to have unreasonable expectations to the volumes of a live band. As it happens, quite a few of these places are wedding venues... so they want the lucrative wedding market and then risk the outcome of the big day with a noise meter set at 85db or thereof... I think this is warped thinking on behalf of the venue and we want no part of it. Get another band...

The fundemental sounds of pick and fingers are going to need different EQ and the problem comes when you need to switch in very quickly. Personally, I want to be able to do things mid bar so re-EQ'ing is out of the question but my consideration is between slap and fingers and those two tone goals can be opposing. Using a pick makes this so much more of a problem but that is why you need to settle on a style and sound that gets both close... You need to reconcile a good pick sound with a fingers sound and an EQ pedal may help here but there are many many players who dabble in all three styles and one or the other sounds don't work very well A pulled slapping note often sounds terrible from a plectrum player as the sound is optimised for one over all else... It is going to be a big compromise but I think a lot of work can get you close with regards to fingers and pick... but it will likely need a pedal, or your compromsie will be in what you can actually contemplate playing with the lesser style sound set-up.
I have read the whole thread, and this line sums up my thoughts completely.
I have to say it sums up quite a lot of things on here as well.

Are some sound engineers 'enemies of bass' ?
JTUK replied to Wayne Firefly's topic in General Discussion
No, I don't think they are..it is just that in some places their hands are tied and the easiest thing to sacrifice is the bass...so that is what they do. At a top level, where people can and do pay for the very best, it can still be a problem so I don't think there is an agenda for the most part. If people were in work who thought like that, they wouldn't be serving their client very well... At local level, finding a quality engr with quality kit who knows how to use it is harder but in a game where your last gig is your reference, it makes no sense to employ someone who just isn't going to try and do the best job within their remit.. Of course, the parameters of that remit are huge and varied but the goal, attitude or thinking shouldn't be..IMO. -
Was there a music stand in there..?
It was the price I was going to have to pay... but sure, music stands for non readers is a bit gaaaa..

And further to VtypeV4 post about horn units... I think anything over an 1" is better. 1" is standard but the better types like QSD tend to offer 1.75. RCF have a 2" range but appear in heavier boxes..??
This is pretty much what we did. Explained the situation to the event organiser, and said to speak to the manager if they'd like the volume turned up. Yeh he had brushes. But disco/funk/motown didnt sound right with them at all
Yep... thought you'd have done that but those sort of gigs send alarm bells to me... and would not be keen to go back there if that was the approach. I do sometimes wonder about venues who want the money from putting on these events but fail to consider that their venue and a few local authority constraints plus any on their own make it totally wrong for the purpose..??

Why do we have to put up with bass bass sound at larger venues?
JTUK replied to jazzyvee's topic in General Discussion
Yes, always a problem where the bass just inhabits a void and fills... and the kick gives it the pulse. Must be easy being a bass player if that is all you have to do... and you only get to hear the real bass if solo'd. Why the sonic space is divided up like this, I'm not sure.. I think the bass is too easy an instrument to sacrifice and also Engrs are too keen getting the sub out there which certainly doesn't help retain bass definition.. In less that ideal acoustic environments bass spillage is easily going to get out of control,..so maybe the default position is to underpin rather than enhance the sound as it will spill everywhere anyway so instead of losing control, you give it away I blame the mass of subs they want to use to the full..?? -
Our drummer was probably the most effected by it. He said he resorted to almost letting the sticks drop onto the drums rather than hitting them.
Horns blowing acoustic is one thing as they can get pretty loud anyway, but I would have a big problem with the drum issue as this would impact on the whole performance and evening so I'd dump the whole thing onto the venue manager who insisted on this approach..and let the client and him come to a compromise...all the while making out the band is willing to do what those two come up with...
-
Not up with the current range of PV ..only that I hear their cabs on all sort.of local band gigs. I'm pretty hot on the vocal sound and the one thing I would look for is not so much the Woofer ..and the BW always was a desirable upgrade, IMO... it is the horn as these tend to take quite a beating and are the weak point. This is not a problem exclusive to PV tho... so, if you go and have a listen, pay particular attention to the hi frequnecy horn..and run loud as a test.

Sounds like a shop problem rather than a maker problem, so my question would be about the shop rather than amp warranty..?? If you feel the shop has been poor, then maybe raise THAT with the distributors?
-
Listening to the video... is that a straight 4 pattern..sounds like it should be 8th's..? Bass sound good.....

I kind of expect most basses wont cut it so this kind of mental scope is going on all the time when looking at basses and once past that, I may pick it up... I can't see my being interested in cheap basses but then expensive ones need to have the right stuff as well. I know what sort of thing I'm looking for..but I do go back to a 5st acoustic fretless which was blindingly good to play ...and that wasn't anywhere near my radar at all. The shop suggested I try it, just for a laugh and I was so shocked and knocked out, I had to run out of the shop quick... Even now, I wonder.....
I was in a similar situation. I bought a new Markbass CMD121P then a matching second hand NY121 cab when funds permitted. Came in pretty much around your budget. Sounds great, is portable and gives the flexibility of one cab or two.
If you like the Markbass sound then this or the 210 combo should come in within budget s/h. I'd also look to get another similar MB cab later so you could go for the 500/4 package for those bigger and outdoors gigs.
-
I wouldn't be that sympathetic with the venue manager if I thought he was clueless and would take direction from the client but would also point out to the client the perceived interference from the venue manager.
-
Yes, really confusing... I twist it one way and it does this, I twist it another and it does that...and I cut or boost the selected frequency. It is a minefield, I tell you.
Seemed OK to me at the time, then again I was 18/19 and what seemed ok to me in the very late 70s would not now. Have just done some Google and found / remembered the cab was a 361. Quite popular at the time http://www.bassplaye...ustic-360/26984 it seems. I saw Ricky Cool circa 1977 - bass player was using one and I just thought - yep got to have one.
I had one for the same reason...it pushed out a lot of bass that just wasn't anywhere typical at the time... But you learn from those sort of moments..or you hope you do.
Yeah, so did Jaco - oh wait, no he didn't.
Or Vega, but you have to know how they approach getting a sound...but you don't see them in use today for a reason... and 99.9% of bass players aren't a Vega or Pastorios either.
