1. The fan on mine is fine but I practice quite loud for home use.. The problem with the TH500 is that it is class D... altho still my favourite lightweight amp. I'm glad it isn't my only option tho..
2. Agree, rust should not be an issue on strings. Maybe that brand don't use decent metal..or you have a lot of stuff coming off your body not mixing too well with your strings. I don't bother wiping my strings but then I rarely sweat at gigs either. I do wash my hands before playing if dirty or if there is anything on them like oil or grease. I'll change the strings when they feel off which is sooner that them sounding my definition of dead
3. To me, this is all about natural resonance which has gotten complicated with all the addiitional kit you need to add. You can swap out all sorts and change strings etc ... but you may also have to come to terms with this being the reason the bass was sold..??
4. I tend to like 10's at least on the top half of rig... I let the natural tune bias of the 212 deal with the lows... and since the 210's are near to my ears, I hear their bias better. It isn't a bi-amped/x-ver rig so the spread is the spread but I find the 212 cab could afford to have some of the lower-end wiped off...and I'd still have a big enough stage sound, Sometimes, I think I prefer the 2x210 option... instead of 212 plus 210..and the 212 is 4ohms and the 210 is 8 ohms so that is how I crudely control the power spread between the 2. The amp can run down to 2 ohms and kick out 900w, iirc... so I could theoretically run out of cab..???
5. Are you sure you want a flat rig..?? With all due respect, you haven't got great inline spec with your kit... What flat signal chains have you used..and are you sure it is for you and the way you play..?
6.
Well luckily the wife allowed a budget of £600 and I found myself some Bergantinos (HT112 & EX112). Definitely worth the upgrade, every note just sings beautifully. Definitely won't need anything else for long time to come. Cheers everyone!
Good choice. I had a link to a pr of SL112's for £600. I think they were in Walsall... They would have got my vote as SL112's came second in our recent limited 12" demo.. Price was right and I'd pay £100 more for them than for the GS's which I've seen for around £500...
7. I think your thinking is ok but driven by the wrong compromise... You want to travel light so you can use public transport, so you can.... The problem is the variables... and the biggest is that you will sacrifice the bass to the P.A spec..which will vary from gig to gig. I wouldn't go down the bass monitor route unless you knew what could be monitored and I never get the thinking that you will be ok because YOU can hear yourself... What is the rest of the band playing to 30 ft away..?? So, unless you know the P.A and what it can produce...and the other variable is what the engr provides, or is willing to provide and how long you get to arrange that, you are not going to be in with much of a chance if you just take care of your end for your own purposes. I think you can streamline kit if you know the kit and how it works... but if you are turning up and making it up as you go along..as the engr is late, half his wedges are down, he isn't very good...it isn't even his rig..etc etc etc the first thing I would be thinking is why would you go for that..?? But..if you can say you are 100% happy with the sound you get at these events, then you are lucky.. Having said all that..which you probably don't want to hear... just make a small box as small as you want and throw a speaker in.. and bobs your uncle.
8. 'Style' is all about a groove and strict time.... it can't be flakey. Put her on top of that vocally and you still have 'bland' with a capital B.. Good fun for the band playing, but vocally..?? She NEEDS a lot of production.
9.
JT dont be like that its a cool song is quite a tricky one too as its a very steady rhythm - am guessing its a sequenced arpeggiated synth line and not a 'proper' bass on the recording we do ramp it up a slight bit too and the guitar is all very effect laden and 'edge' like so sounds a little bit U2-ish we think it works feel free to come to a gig and throw rotten tomatoes if you disagree
I did pull up a few of her songs but as much as I have sympathy for her etc etc etc ..I think she is very plastic and the songs I've heard are easiiy forgettable... It is as though she has geared up for this her entire life and has been lucky enough to be indulged, but for her stature as a major MAJOR act, it isn't built on the greatest talent.. IMO, of course. But yes, I'll be over to catch up with you guys soon
10.
Same here. Why would you try to replicate the original bass tone?! Unless you are playing in a quality tribute act, no one will notice.
I don't play in their style either,...unless it is someone like Andy Fraser when I'll try and give it a bit of a nod to him, but he was an influence anyway, so I don't have to step over too far...
11. Yep, someone do her, FCS..!!! preferable with a base ball bat round the mooie
12. I'd go with the active wedge/P.A cab and maybe look to put a basic EQ unit inline depends how many inputs you have... Good keys don't need a great deal of EQ anyway, IMO,
13.
I have a friend who is an opera singer who does around 3 hours vocal warm-up before a performance.
In a nutshell... it amazes me that people take so little care of an already fragile instrument and one that is so important to the band. We had a limit of 2 hrs for a gig but even that was a struggle so now we have cut it down to 105 mins. My new project will have 2 main vocals and apart from the mix-up that this gives and the superb harmonies they're known for, these two singers really can't afford to get into voice flogging territory as their main bands depend on them.
14.
LukeFRC WhAt retro 210 are we talking about (brand)? Surprised they don't offer a backpack option for barefaced midget range. Missing a trick there. Cheers
Don't get started on handles and straps...
15. Just me and my bass..I don't want FX so I cover everything with the bass. I don't mess with the amp EQ either...once it has the sound I don't touch it altho I might adjust the volume. I have a GT10-B but I not even plugged it in for months.
16.
Thanks JTUK. If I'm mainly using DI at gigs and rehearsals arent crazy loud, can I not find a ultra light 8 ohm 15" /12" circa 300/400W cab that 'can' be easily lugged around without band mate favours? Surely something on the market? Or do I ask too much!
Again, I know I couldn't find one... but there are plenty of cabs which would have a 300w rating but how usable you could make it, only you will know. I've done gigs with single 112's and I wouldn't do them by choice ever again. Even 10kgs or so... how far can you walk that..?? But since you will be on public transport, that is something you are going to have to handle. 100 mtrs with a cab in 1 hand is bad news. Maybe you could hook up on your back..?? but I'd be learning to drive ASAP..
17. If the band is good and gets hold of the song, then it doesn't matter what song it is.. but another band can butcher my favourite song and I'll hate it.
18. As always no simple answer, as who knows how far you'd have to lug it for any given gig. If one of the band members were able to pick you up at the station/bus stop every time and you could get a lift to the station at the start of your journey then I still think you could think about gigging a quiet sort of gig with a cab that would weigh 25lbs or less, maybe, but how loud or effective one of those would or could be is something you'd have to find out yourself. I did a blues gig with a 210 and that was a struggle. The set-up got there in terms of volume but it was a one -off and I would not look forward to doing so again, especially from a tone POV.
19. Not driving and gigging are hardly compatible... but you will have to compromise on either the tone and/or volume if you want a 600w type box that you can walk to a gig.
20. Yes, don't go back to pubs as tickets is the way to go... There are plenty of mid sized venues that can't fill their rosta so very good cover bands or tributes are the way to go. Not entirely sure I like this from a certain POV but it is what it is and you have the opportunity to get up and running with a ticketed gig. You can always do the better pubs which cater for tickets...and more and more do, IMO, or are certainly open to them rather than the free gig fare.. I would think you could price yourselves at £750-1000 for a 350 capacity room. Still got to sell the tickets and be good enough, mind, but definitely the way to go, IMO.
21. Cracked Actor. I'd be interested to hear how Tribute bands work in pubs
22. To widen this, I think I'm a good listener and I think I hear everything that people do in the band. From this, I'm able, IMO, to go to the essense of that player and then I match them up with other like minded players. I have to hear what the player does and how he plays, to then know what material to give them..and this should help avoid square pegs in round holes. I know what I want to hear for the most part so I know how it goes together. It doesn't matter if we are talking bass, keys gtr, drums. I tend not to hear vocals to the same degree tho...
23.
See posts 2 & 3
But what if it doesn't suit you...? But sure, there are plenty of them in the classifieds so you'll be able to trade back..
24.
I think that's a very blunt tool. There's much better ways of networking than playing impressive riffs in a music shop.
Of course, but I did get asked if I would do bass lessons for the shop. I'm networked pretty well around here, IMHO, but these were new owners and I ended up giving one of them lessons... In the grand scheme of things, it wasn't a goal, but that is the way that happened.
25. If it is so good for your requirements and suits you, why change it?
