1.
I'm not convinced by the 'guru' argument. Of course we all have different requirements in a bass sound and that is a matter of personal taste / preference. But the rest - the 'easier to reduce bass than to add it' type argument - personal preference / taste etc has nothing to do with it. It's physics and maths. Either the numbers add up or they don't. The position stated "easier to reduce bass..." is not a comment on quality of sound or whether the sound will be liked by an individual customer. It's simply a scientific question that has a calculable answer. It reminds me a lot of youtube rants about everything from vaccinations to homeopathy to evolution and it always comes down to a straight fight between someone who has a calculator and someone who doesn't, or doesn't know how to use it. Or refuses to use it because it interferes with a cherished and long held world-view. Personal incredulity is not evidence. Personal experience is not evidence. In an engineering problem the answers are in the numbers. Nowhere else.
I think it depends where you start from and where you need to get. In the grand scheme of things, it doesn't matter too much down the pub but even then, you'll find plenty of people who need to learn a few basics...IMHO. But, by the same token, if a market demands a certain bias, then that is ok as well. That isn't educating anything... it is supplying a demand, but don't confuse that with the end goal.. Again, IMO... I don't really care if people don't get it. If you are happy with your sound, then that is your main thing.
 2.
Some nice ideas here, cheers. Oly White is not one I'd considered with mint. It works if the mint isn't too dark imo. Seafoam is great and one of my faves. There is so much choice, especially when you look at all the Ral and BS colours too.
Maple is hard to get really really great ..with regards to a match-up but I'd take a look at what Lakland do with maple set-ups.. So much more choice with RW boards, I think.
 3.
Thanks for the reply.... Although I wasn't taIking about Barefaced cabs at all. I was referring to the opposite opinions from yourself and Alex over adding or reducing bass and how, from a non-technical viewpoint, you would prove yourself to be correct and Alex wrong. To me, your reply to Alex wasn't helpful as there were no facts or counter argument. To be honest, I was being a bit mischievous because I didn't believe you could do it. The fact that I'm a long term Barefaced user has no bearing on this for me either. I also use other cabs and I'm open minded to new innovations - but the engineer in me tends to lead me to wanting to know the technical details more than a persons subjective opinion alone. I read a post recently where a Compact owner said his Compact struggled when powered by his 200 watt amp. The fact is, the amp was struggling, not the cab. So there you have an example of where having technical knowledge is hugely beneficial. Keep the cab and buy a new amp, not the other way around. I've noticed this myself when powering my Compact with my Mesa Walkabout - if you demand too much the Walkabout starts to overdrive rather than give more volume. That doesn't happen with my Streamliner 900 though, it just gives me higher volume for those (very rare) occasions when I need that it. I still believe technical specifications are important, in conjunction with subjective listening, preferably on a gig. That's a long post for me. Frank.
It is far more than that.. so many guys here seem to think this is all guru stuff and whilst I'll appreciate some guys are very talented in that regard, my opinion is that there are way more sorted people on this thread when it comes to sound and specifically bass, let alone out there making cabs. And to me, the proof of that is in the product. If you guys continue to trade in them on here, they have a market...and that is fine. The reason I pop up and tend to comment is because there are foreever so many threads about them.. It's almost co-ordinated I don't think it should be accepted that bass cabs starts and end there...which may be the impression a newbie might get.
 4.
.........You could only dream of owning a Fender or Gibson or Gretsch or Shergold... ...............
I've never ever yearned for a Gibson, Gretsch or Shergold.. I've always regarded them as planks.. certainly sound-wise..and that is allowing for the fact that they were playable..??
 5. No, No point, IMO. How are you going to split the signal to have a hi or lo bias..??
 6.
I would be very surprised if they didn't compress and limit bass output purely so they don't accidentally blow the speakers! When they say; 'play as loud as you're going to during the set' that is probably just what they are doing.
Sure..what I mean is I don't want one for me... but I accept they'll see their mix differently..
 7.
Just a technical precision... 'Affiliate' posts are not payable, they have their own conditions, notable offering a discount or advantage to BC members. Details in the FAQ, here... 'Affiliates' FAQ ... Just sayin'.
OK ..I was thinking of having your own paid for thread...
 8.
My 2p - go for the Am Deluxe, it's more likely to hold its value.
Yup... it may be a factor. The AC will be second hand so hopefully that price will stay there or thereabouts..? I don't fancy the AM D at new ...so will pay around £k I think, so the loss will likely be in the commission and if I'm spending that sort of money, maybe the AC prices come into play as well..?? Depends what I see for sale and when...
 9. No 1 rig is sorted but I have some new cabs coming and will want to run that as a lightweight rig but already I have my eye on a possible upgrade amp-wise... and that is more about the power output than the sound. That will leave me with a minimum of 3 amps... which means 1 is spare and never gets used,. As for basses, I have an idea about a AC J5 but it will probably spell the end on another bass so I have to be sure it is a viable better bass for me... Failing that, I might finally go for that commission I've been thinking about for some time...or just get a Fender Am Deluxe J5 ..??
 10. I think it is useful to manage dynamics without a compressor.. I've never wanted to use one in my chain, but I'm sure engrs have their own ideas for their mix
 11.
You'll need to watch it with the Mrs now.
No..she'll file that under 'some weird tw**' and she'll wonder what on earth I was looking at..?? So, yes..too weird..!!
 12.
You could start by proving Alex wrong and, with your extensive knowledge of bass guitar loudspeaker cabinets, that should be easy enough for you. You and Alex are in totally opposing positions on the issue - I would love to know who is right and who is wrong here. And I would look forward to learning something from your rebuttal. Frank.
Well, I've heard his cabs and some guys playing thru them. I've also seen them... I'd go along with the mid league table description in the cab world as mentioned previously. So, yes, I don't buy into the whole thing, I'm afraid. Others might not agree, ..oh well..!! The other issue I seem to come across is how come it is ok to promote a certain brand which you are connected to which others can't seem to do. FWIW, I have no connections with any cab maker...but if a cab maker was so vocal they'd probably need to pay in affiliations..??
 13.
I'll say this and this will apply to the younger guys more than the over 50 crowd. If your looking to be a true headliner you have to want to then you have to be prepared to take a risk. You don't take the risk then be prepared to tell people you have been playing bars and parties for the rest of your life. And you will have a million excuses just like me, why you didn't take the risk. And I'll catch hell for this , but nobody will ever convince me they love their office job. And understand we have a bunch of folks over here that hate their jobs but it's the only way they can get health insurance. Blue
Well, depends what the gig pays and what the committment is. I'm not up for schlepping around Europe or whereever crashing in dives and playing tiny stages. Everynow and then I might get invited to a 'nice' gig but I'll need the money and the whole deal to be ok. IF I was to do it full time, I'd want considerably more p.a than my current jobs pays, and I'd want it to be pretty steady for a good few years. Earning good money at music isn't so hard, it is doing it day-in, day-out, week-in, week-out, that is the trick. I'll wager than many of my friends struggle to earn £25k a year doing what they love..?? and I mean struggle..!! Me, I have bills and a life style to pay for... so no, I would have to have a LOT of questioned answered.. What price/salary I would have to be in with a very good chance of earning, every year..I'd have to think, and I also don't think it is going to happen either.
 14. I think the guy is ripping it as per the original.. and the fact that it is up front in the vid mix can depict as 'busy'...but that is the nature of the line and the fact that he has decided to highlight with his sound. I'd suggest the original track was mixed bown a tad re the bass... So, as with all these things, it is a snapshot demo... If he has played it well, or not...I think he must be happy enough to put it up there..??
 15. I'm more convinced by a song I don't fancy if we play it particularly well.. but with most set lists, I'm looking for anything bar the standard fare, which you see pop up in so many band's sets.. Basically, I'm looking for a band with something to say, rather than a set of 'choons'..
 16. Can't watch it....
 17. If he has applied to your advert then something is not quite right with the ridiculously good thing...IMO People generally gravitate to their perceived level as things are just so much easier that way and you have less chance of someone getting peed off...either trying too hard to keep up or the other guys trying too hard to pull you along... By all means meet and see what common ground you have... but novice and ridiculously good don't generally mix, tbh.. Good luck tho..
 18. Great amps, superbly made with top spec components. The proof is in the fact that these amps can run so hot without fans, IMO. You'll pay a LOT of money to get that in an amp these days.. I reckon Just a plug as I have one and I doubt I'll sell it.
 19.
But what a dimension and the short scale thing certainly makes me play differently (whether it is any better is open to debate!)
Not my thing, but my post was taking into account the OP talked about flexibility in sound and style, which isn't something I'd put at the door of an SG
 20. I know who my money is on....
 21.
Funnily enough I've not heard anyone complain about the AE series. The AE112 and 210's have always been very popular. One of the easiest cabs to sell because they're in so much demand
Agree, but then we are talking about a premium cab maker so no surprise there. FWIW, I preferred the CN range over the AE on a demo and agree it was a step on, but I couldn't justify the cost of a supposed 'upgrade'
 22.
This is the absolute opposite of reality! It is incredibly easy to get rid of bass (turn the bass knob to the left) but impossible to add more than the limit determined by the volume displacement of a loudspeaker.
oh dear, I don't know where to start, but I'll not bother, thanks. Carry on as you are.
 23.
In my experience of singers in a function band, both band members and deps, I can't recall working with one who could read music. (In fact one or two struggled with reading...). Why is this I wonder?
Formal training which a lot don't have. My eyes..and ears..were opened when you get a singer who wants a harmony sang on the second or 9th of the chord, for example and can put that in place whilst the gtrs and keys are sorting out a chord themselves... so in an 8 bar or so run thru, its sorted vocally.
 24. There is a lot of truth in the 'headline' band being THE band that most want to see. Otherwise, you'll just try and pick the best slot with the most people there and sometimes that definitely isn't last on the bill...
 25.
You will have to travel and sleep in an over sized van, but for me that would be no problem. Blue that would be the deal breaker for me these days. Sod that. I have definitely got to the stage where I never want to stay somewhere that is of lesser quality and less comfortable than my own bed.
Me too... I'd rather make it back home but if it is a stop-over, I want to be looked after and be in a decent hotel..i,e one I'd book myself in. and I don't slum it these days...minimum 3 *,
