Beautiful - Overwater do make some splendid basses
I've tried a couple...not the Tanglewood things... and they were very good,

Do you compromise "your sound" for a decent mix with band?
JTUK replied to Iheartreverb's topic in Effects
I wouldn't sacrifice my sound for the band as I don't think I'd have to. We've done all that at the start so I know how we'll all fit together. Not saying I wouldn't tweak it...as would anyone else in the band have to consider it, but 'sacrifice'..?? no. -
(Big assumption being made here) Get him to lay off the weed for a few weeks
Maybe, but I don't really care or rather, not so much my concern. The guy can either cut it within the confines of the band or we get someone else in. I'm all for being supportive, but there are limits and not being up to a required brief is one of them. If you can live with those confines, then fine..you have a way ahead, if you can't, then something will break.

If you don't want to leave..... then you don't have much choice. I don't know how posting here is going to help much as it obviously bothers you to a point...so I am not sure the issue is going to go away. If you are willing to put up whit it, then I assume you don't think things will change and you aren't THAT bothered. I'm notoriously hard on bands..not least my own, so I kind of admire you wanting to stick it out.
Do the maths again; each cab is, apparently, 8 ohms, so 4 ohms 'seen' by each channel. No problem with running like that, either for the amp nor the cabs. Part of the idea is, indeed, to present an impressive backline. Should do the trick, I reckon.
sure, but it wasn't crystal clear that there were 4 cabs in the first post... so my first answer is relates to 2 cabs. If you are going for visual and have 2 heads... run them as 2 bass rigs... or just don't bother connecting up the 2nd pr. Noone is going to want that much bass of stage sound-wise. If you are taking 4 cabs, then I expect the 2nd amp will be there as a spare anyway..?? it isn't going to take up much room in the grand scheme of things.
-
I wouldn't leave cabs there all year round.. but through the summer you'll be ok. If the room isn't temp controlled I'd bring them in by October. Crabby old cabs wouldn't worry me, but decent newish ones would be in decent temps..
-
Sorry, didn't read that as 4 cabs..??? You running 1x410 plus 115 per side..? Yes, in that case, you'd have a load of 2 ohms which your amp wont bridge at.. In that case, I would run 2x500 at 4 ( more like 350w/4... IF I wanted to carry 4 cabs. Apart from the visual, I'd still run bridged into 4 ohms.... and 2 cabs at 8ohms would give you that. Saves carrying two extra cabs.... and 4 cabs on stage is there for effect, IMO.
-
To me, this is not at all normal, so you either need a system to 'bypass' him having no reasonable song recollection or you get past this gig and look again. People forget a line and a few notes.,... but the only way his problem is even remotely excusable is if you are a dep with little or no prep. I'd be thinking he has retention and memory issues and this doesn't bode well
-
You have 500w per channel done to 2ohms... so that means you can run two ohms loads per side but you haven't got the cabs for that, so I'd run bridged which means both your cabs run together would be a 4 ohms load in the bridge mode and the amp will 'deliver' 1000w into 4. No point running stereo as 500 into 2 means your load will not produce much power.. so I can see that the stereo load meaning your amp is running less than 200w into your cabs..? I don't know why anyone would set it up to do this...???

List the kit with all shells and cymbals. List the Gtr stacks and gtrs and pedals. List Keys and what sort of feeds he will send List bass rig and bass and pedals. List an acoustics which will likely need a DI box. List BV's and Lead Vox..and if wireless mic req'd.. List what needs to go to each monitor. And then ask what Tech spec the venue provides. Put minimum spec requred, ie mics and standards or monitors. This may well be ignored for a support band, but touring acts will detail a min spec... and the idea is to marry up your expectations to theirs. If you say you require EAW and up, and they suggest PV..then draw your own conclusions. You will need a min of 4 stage mixes so insist on it, even if you could get away with 2. Tell them how big the stage size and the drum riser must be.
Simply put, I have the offer of 2 tickets to see Paul McCartney at the NEC - eigth row, and at face value - but, that £240 ish quid for 2 tickets and Mrs A isnt a fan, as she's still not forgiven him for marrying again so quickly after Linda died. Not that she's a massive Linda fan, but she felt it was too soon and disrespectful, given his protestations about the love of his life. She also thinks his voice is shot, and it's too late now to see him live, as he's just past it. That said, she's willing to go, as she knows I'd simply like to see him in the flesh, before it's too late. Anybody seen him live recently? Can he still cut it, or am I going to spend a lot of wedge and come away dissapointed? All thoughts greatly appreciated as I need to say yes or no tonight to the guy offering them up!
I'm not a fan at all... and I would assume he is well past it.... but he isn't going to get any better, and he may not tour much more anyway in this sort oif setting, so I'd go and get it out of your system and then you can say you saw him. I can't see it being a bad show anyway and so as long as you can justify the price..GO..!!
If I could just stick my nose in here for a moment, with the question below about the Berg's
I think the AE112's were the first Berg NEO solution and then HD came about because Berg didn't like the hike in NEO prices so decided on a non-NEO range.... Once they saw that NEO wasn't off the table price-wise anymore the CN was the NEO answer again. Whether BErg led or where led on the NEO question is another thing, but I think the CN is a revised NEO offering. I played thru both and if I had the AE's, I wouldn't be that keen paying for new CN's... but if I wanted a new NEO config, then they would be one of the very first I'd look at. In fact, I'm not sure I'd look past Berg CN. Having said that, not that keen on NEO full stop, but the Bergs are the best NEO that I've used/played thru
I suppose it's all relative really. Most of the "great" players wouldn't necessarily work in different contexts but I think that is something which is true for most people as nobody is good at everything. Not Jaco, Mark King, John Entwistle or whomever your idol might be would work in a different situation. Whilst they all are great at what they do, none of them would work that well in a different genre. Even the best session musicians in the world whether that be Nathan East or Pino can't do everything well. Pino's destruction of the Who as a live entity being a prime example. He's ruined that band. Whilst I agree with JTUK's comments per se they do read as being quite bitter in some context, which I'm sure wasn't the intent. For my own part, I can do maybe 2 things very well. The John Entwistle style (double hand tapping) and the usual nonsense that entails in that sort of "lead bass" style. The other being a style more in line with Justin Chancellor which is more in the progressive metal type vein which lends itself to the odd time meters and heavily polyrythymic playing (which I truly love). Would I fit in a funk band? Not really. Then again, I have no interest in being in a band like that. Everyone concentrates on what they need for what they do. It's just logic really. So to criticise someone shouting "one trick pony" is merely oneself looking at one's own proficiency in the mirror.
I just didn't agree that being in MUse and playing on a gazillion records and making even more money constitutes 'great;...so I think that is a post or thread that a fan would make rather than it be objective. Both Jaco and Mark King got asked to play in different outfits... but the problem is that you get Mark King for doing what he does best..which is an amazing exponent of slap..and then it becomes more about him on the track that the track itself... and also, why would MK play like that for someone else...he would rather do that for L42.?? However, his fingerstyle talent is right up there as well... . As for Jaco, he worked outside of Weather Report quite a lot. John Entwhistle...?? er, not so much but he is also a one man band type player, I'd say.
To JTUK I've just been mulling over the content of my post above and am conscious that it could be taken the wrong way. I just think I'm a glass half full kind of person rather than a half empty. I get enough of the half empty crapola at work and take umbridge to wherever else I see it. I think even you would have to admit that he's bloody good at what he does within Muse. I think there would be fairly decent odds that he could take it further in some other direction. Just sayin' - if you'll excuse the quote :-)
I did say that he did very well in Muse. And I also said this wasn't all about the one guy..I said many bass players...and muso's for that matter, excel in only environment and that is understandable as well. It doesn't make them great, IMO. It may make them God in certain fans eyes... but I've never got that either.

Not sure I'd call an OBT as especially compatible with a lot of cabs... so I'd want to know WHAT cab. As always, I'll ask what is being provided and if I think I can use it, I will..... or if they want to use mine, I'll bass tech it for a fee. Tbh, there aren't going to many rigs better than mine so I'm always thinking I'll take mine...and I know how it works for me.. Ask many questions, IMO
I really don't understand what Chris has done to deserve this snipe. Putting "just sayin'" at the end doesn't excuse your unfounded criticism.
Don't get why you are being so precious about 'Chris' but assume you know him and are being protective or you are a big fan. I'm just saying that people who have played in one band for many many years can get very proficient at the one thing they do. That doesn't always a make them a great bass player..which it what I was answering to.

I would have replied to a few points....but nowhere to be seen so I can't and doubt I'll get time now anyway

Not sure I came up with his name, but I tried all sorts including Wembley and another company I shipped the chassis'to and they then said the units would produce only 100w each... By this time, I wasn't convinced this was all going to work out so I went with the Eminence units...didn't like the sound much, ...altho EVERYONE told me this was a great conversion, so I sold them. In retrospect, I should have bought the re-cone kits from the U.S and got them fitted here,but...??
-
Be reasonable what you expect from even 2x110 outside, particuarly. If your 110 is 8ohms...don't add a 210 at 8 as you will unbalance the signal in 110 and 210... For that sort of gig, I'd add a 212, but even then, I'd expect the amp to be running ragged, tbh... Maybe a 4 ohms 212 will maximise things, but outside gigs ask a LOT from a bass rig
-
................ It would be, which is why I have never promulgated that notion. But it's all a matter of scale. While no sensible bass rig would ever be large enough for low frequencies to be affected in a major way by horizontal versus vertical placement, it could be a concern with a large PA system. A dozen or more large subs arranged side by side across the front of a stage would be an example, unless it was the operators intent in so doing to limit the horizontal dispersion of the array.
Agree. P.A is a different deal altogether.
-
If I'm following this correctly we are talking the full range signal passing through the bass guitar cab (either with this .5 driver arrangement only sharing LF or a FR pair with horn/tweeter), so essentially it isn't the LF dispersion that we are only talking about... yes?
My feelling would be that Bass gtr frequencies are mostly out of consideration for dispersion... I generally don't buy the whole argument anyway...as bass from a bass cab will get everywhere and altho you might be to the left or right of the cab....you'll still be in front of it ...albeit at an angle so less a factor anyway even if it applied. I do concede bass players have a problem hearing their bass... but I think that is mostly a problem they'll cause with their choice or sound and playing style. I think the stage mix will be for everyone in the band so this obesession for a bass sound that only suits the bass player is one of their own making as far as hearing it is concerned.
Still puzzled as other commercially available horizontal, multi-driver cabs have been singled out as flawed and most have a crossover in them. Not that I am fussed but it seems odd to have had so many years of posts deriding the horizontal alignment of drivers and then along comes a BF cab of the same design. I've no doubt I shall be learning something new re. this matter very shortly.
Always thought vertical was a myth for low frequencies ( dispersion ) so I found it quite funny to see the argument 'persued'
You're not being very consistent here JTUK. Chris is a great player and a top top professional at the height of his powers, there's no evidence to suggest that he is one-dimensional. It's hard to reconcile your criticism in this thread with your fawning over Vailbass elsewhere. I'm not a fan of Muse's more recent stuff, but the performance on Saturday night was exactly what the event needed from a bona-fide headliner, and they made all the other Saturday acts look third-rate.
I think I'm being totally consistant... what you see is one player in one scenario doing a great job. My point is can he play in any other setting...does he have a grounding for it, does he has the ear for it, etc etc .. We'll probably never know as he'll never need to work again anyway.... but these niche players may or may not have much of a grounding elsewhere. Who else would employ them... ?? not so very many as you don't hear what else they can do.. I've been on a few auditions and a whole bunch of proggy guys don't know a soul/RnB set... so they sound like fishes out of water. The biggest surprise there is that they didn't realise they needed empathy and needed to know a few stylistic things,...and of course, they never got the job
