What do you listen to on the way home from a gig~
JTUK replied to Japhet's topic in General Discussion
Nothing, mostly.. -
Why not both?
Because it would be my third choice bass.... so its that or a American Deluxe J5
-
Everyone makes mistakes but playing out of time shouldn't be one of them.
Tell that to the drummer last night... I'm not used to playing with people with bad time but this guy was very enthusiastic about it
-
.................. I get grumpy if I make bad mistakes, but I also enjoy music far more if I'm being creative. There's little pleasure in the technical exercise of note & timing perfect, but without expression. The times I've been happiest have been the times when 'something special' has happened, rather than I've played correctly.
You can't have one without the other as far as I'm concerned.... ???
I do think it's a bit unfair for people to rate amps based on their rehearsal room experience of them. Those amps are abused almost every day for years on end, so small wonder they sound rubbish.
True, but I remember them when some of them were new... and they were awful then..
-
maybe your cab (runs and hides)?
No, as Carlbro and H/H were combos in a studio and they were awful and pretty much not useable. The GK was borrowed so not my cabs either, that was awful too, IMO. and the Ashdown was run with my cabs and I know how they sound which is why I owned them. The guy who subsequently bought them used an Ashdown and he sold the cabs as well... .. I think he should have sold that amp, for sure.. I recently used a Ashdown 210 combo and that was quite decent...

Maybe ... or maybe the LPB.................or Teal ??

Definitive Album by Chaka Khan, Naughty, virtually every track a 5...which considering AJ did most of the work, iirc, is not surprising and his lines definitely do not lack melody. Anything by Phil Collins ...like Sussudio, And you can't say Stevie Wonder doesn't write with a 5 str as his MD is Nathan Watts and you don't often see him without a 5.. and seeing that SW default key seems to be Eb. But hey, if you don't know this stuff, you don't know.
-
I think the make of bass is immaterial. Can you think of any well- known, distinctive bass lines played below an E on a bass guitar? I bet you can't...
I'm sure I could...try Sledgehammer. I'm sure with a bit of time, I could come up with more. Nathan East must be in there somewhere..
-
You've played the wrong 5's then... there is no reason why the B string shouldn't be as focused as the E string and therefore as balanced as the others. Well, there are plenty of reasons, but none that you should make you buy those basses.. IMO.
-
I was playing a Stingray at the time and I needed that string spacing on a 5... and that ruled out a lot of basses.. One of the reasons I went to get one made... plus none of the 5's around at that time convinced me. Now I make sure I have 19mm at the bridge and a P.bass at the nut on a 5 str.
-
Ran my J5 passive last night...and that made me think of Lakland DJ5's again.. Think I'd like a Blue one with RW..??
-
That looks so nice, it doesn't help my choices tho.. Thinking classic black and maybe silver blue cloth but am not sure any of the pics really show that cloth colour well.
-
No, but it is a pursuit of a form of excellence and whatever your standard is, if you come up short, then that will get to you...or it will me. I could pick plenty of holes from last night from the whole band, but I wont as I was the dep, and I don't have to do the gigs, but if I'd been watching me... I wouldn't have been impressed, especially as I know what I should have been able to do. Maybe there were technical mitigations etc etc but it still p****s me off.
-
Played last night and I was right off the pace... Running an amp to its limit really really didn't help as I had to dig in too hard but it went down well and dep band were happy. I'm annoyed as I was compromised, IMO, massively...

Aftermarket Jazz necks- any advice welcomed
JTUK replied to oh...it's_a_squier's topic in Bass Guitars
I'd get Sims to make me one..they could scan your favourite one and jazz it up with flame or birdseye? It might be the same ballpark money but you'd get exactly what you wanted..? -
Would it be too difficult to engineer removable grills, so that one could 'pick'n'mix', collect all the colour variants, change one's 'look' at a whim..? Magnetic fixture for quick change-over between sets..? A whole new 'accessory' market to be had, no..? No, I don't want royalties from the idea, but I'd be willing to test your prototype model, if it's adopted..!
Depends if the speakers are loaded from front and back... but no, I don't want bits having a chance to fall off, tbh. I've seen these cabs up close and they are very well made indeed... don't risk that with a changeable magnetic type fix...???
-
White and oxblood grill is getting my attention just now.... but I'll probably end up with classic black with the silver blue cloth in the V frame.. Love the sounds of the S112's so I use a horn in one of them.
-
I've got a couple coming up and I'm doing them as a favour... but they'll feature stuff I haven't listened since I was in my teens... and that is SOME time ago. I'll call them a Blues type bar band and they'll do stuff from Rory G thru to Thin L and Golden Earing so you can guess what is coming next. I'll find it hard as never played those songs but the one thing that you MUST have in these busking situations is a drummer who can play SOLID time... when you are flying around all over the place, you can't be having to worry about the time... as it can so easily end up a mess. Haven't seen these guys before, so hopefully they'll have solid drummer. They are reasonably well regarded but we'll see if that counts for anything.

Barefaced Retro Six 10 (610) owners/reviews/opinions?
JTUK replied to smeet's topic in Amps and Cabs
Hi all, this is my first post, please be gentle... I am considering buying a (slightly) used Retro Six 10, which is too far from me to try out. I'm in the US, so Barefaced cabinets are very rare. The 610 barely exists over here. From a cursory search it looks like there aren't even that many in the UK? I'm hoping that there are a few owners that could weigh in and help me. Or even if you've heard one. Or heard of one. Lately I've been in a ridiculous cabinet-buying frenzy, looking for THAT SOUND. Here's what I have right now: Bergantino NV610 Baer ML212 fEARful 15/6/12 and 12/6/1 (home-built) Ampeg 212av .......... Will it really give me something that I don't already have covered? Is it worth twice the cost of a used NV610?
I'd 'guess' this is the comment that finished off any discussion..?? Berg cabs are revered over here pretty much by all. IMO. But not many people here have a need for a 610..as that is too much cab for the gigs they do too often...? -
Not for a saving of £25..

I agree, you need to be singing from the same page re the gigs you want to do. A little selling of the idea is fine, to get people on board, but they must agree...not be forced or obliged, as this leads to ill feeling that will fester and more than likely break up the band. As much as the leader may feel you aren't supporting him, he isn't considering others priorities ..like the wife at home resenting the time it takes you away from the family etc etc If he wants to determine the whole show... then he needs to have your 100% devotion and that likely means you are on salary... If he needs you all to agree, then the band is still something of a democracy ( tentative ) and co-operation and compromise is the key.. As you say, you know he will likely try this again... but you may also have the experiences of the Stornaway band to take on board. The idea of the showcase isn't so much the bad idea... it is the way it is presented and will be executed. If the venue was a toilet then this wouldn't convince me that these people could deliver on their 'promises' and they need to sell you their track record as much as you need to sell yours.. If the connection is that they've picked your name out of a hat, pretty much, then...the sentiment of this thread is likely to be 100% true, and some..
The "Benefit" is also a tough nut to deal with for most bands. I, as a rule vote "No" when they are presented to the band. I will bend and I am not sure why, when;

It's a good cause that I believe in
Major metro stage,
You know the crowd will be huge ( thousands)
A good time slot,
Top line backline and
Top shelf sound and lighting.
They treat the bands well
Some of my criteria could also justify a showcase. Blue
Fair..... we'd still be asking for a fee/exes and I'd expect that to be considered as that sort of Op does not sound like a bunch of chancers... Being a creditable gig cuts both ways, IMO..

I wouldn't agree that the live scene is dying..but it takes a whole lot more effort for the same money as regards to pubs.. The upside is that parties and festivals are more abundant so pubs aren't important any more altho they do serve a purpose to get you to the parties and festivals. I just think pubs are less important and the better ones realise they need to raise their game or they occupy the same territory and same type of bands and they are the ones that turn people off. Bands playing the same material and not getting crowds are obviously doing things wrong but by the same token, maybe that is what they settle for..as what is important to the guys in the band is to get out and get on any terms. Pubs might book them on the lower scale of money as that is all they are prepapred to work at. If they get a music budget of £250 per band/week, and they can get away with paying less than that..?? Basically, I think many pubs don't give it much thought ..they book a band and expect it all to work from there.. No one is knocking their buns out for £250 worth of business............and that is why the scene is difficult for many many reasons... IMO.

New amp day..........spend my money for me.........
JTUK replied to donslow's topic in Amps and Cabs
Obviously 'throw' could be confused with cab 'throw' but this isn't the cab as a class D wont do it with the same cab, IMO. Cabs can also be too much for the gig, IMO, but that is another conversation..
