Always was better than good gear and the WT800 was definitive at the time, IMO... The cabs matched it as well so it would have been a world class touring rig. You paying new or second hand..?

Always great to hear again - nearly 43 years later!!

I can live with most of the line-ups but Made In Japan was a fantastic Live snapshot of the band at their peak. I liked the way the band changed/evolved and was less concerned about rehashing the past.. altho whether it worked for the die-hards is another call. But for a band to go 30 years plus , you need to mix it up and I think they tried to do that to keep it reasonably fresh and vibrant. Blackmore was a magical player but when he rejoined around the late 80's early 90's..forget which time... he just wasn't the same player/same mindset and that really finsished them off. Morse rescued them to a degree, but only because Gillian and Glover came back.. I think it is great you got such a lenght of time out of them as a top notch act..?? Most should know when to give it up... Bolin was class.... but it needed time....and the the band were probably too messed up at that time as well.. MIJ for early 70's is a great live album, IMO.. and was a benchmark of the time..?? -
I run the drive up for a bit of a boost ( around 1 o clock ) but I've always had to run amps harder due to the way I play. It is plenty loud enough in a pub/small room with the gain at 1 and 1, thru 4 ohms. It works ok but it isn't a big block. The compromise is valid where I use it.

Leon Sylvers ..what bass did he play on Shalamars Friends album
JTUK replied to timhiggins's topic in General Discussion
If I had to guess, I'd say a P bass -
I used to do this but it is really taking away the strenght of playing with a pick IMV..

I know the TH500 is a very good match-up with TKS S112's..and I'd say the PF500 is good as well. Used both of them in our TKS shoot-out demo. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/248837-cn112-v-sl112-v-s112/page__p__2607747__hl__cn112__fromsearch__1#entry2607747

Would normally say that is not normally my sort of thing, but it looks great. Would like to hear it...

If you are running a big bass cab, you'll likely be running subs, 88 keys and full drum traps....so everyone is in the same boat to get organised...
I've been trying to bring back the term " Groovy " and it ain't working at all. Blue
I've been using it for ages... it's beyond 'sick' which is pretty lame these days
Big tip - before you start your set, check if there's a tweeter on their cab, and turn it off. This is realistically the only thing you will likely blow up. Speakers in bass cabs can take a LOT of stick before they die. If you can't turn that off, you maybe want to check you don't rag the input of the amp too hard as it could generate nasty distortion (often not the nice valvey type) which is often the thing that kills tweeters. Lots of amps have 'clip lights' to show when they are starting to max out on the input stage. ..............
Don't agree with not being able to blow speakers... I've known quite a few instances relatively recently. That is why I like to always be able to hear the entire bass range thru a cab and why I'm not a fan of distortion, I want to be hearing when/if I am pushing it hard but when I hired out a rig I should have known someone would turn up with a VT pedal and use it as a ridiculous volume pedal into the front of the amp. I had to back the input gain right off but the guy using it wouldn't have given that any thought.. He ran the amp as loud thru the pedal at 9 o clock of gain and 9 on master as everyone else did off 1 o clock and 1 o clock ..and it was thru a 750w plus rig. He didn't seem to understand that he was waaaay too loud for the stage as well....and he ran a distortion signal all the time. If you ever wonder why rehearsal rigs are shot it is because people like that use a pedal to get more volume out of the input stage and basically trash the rig because they don't know what they are doing, can hear nothing, and the gear isn't theirs either so what does it matter..?? So, I wouldn't trust them with cabs unsupervised.. IME.

I like OT and spend time in there, so I don't have a problem with the vast majority of spats there may or may not be. And why limit it to OT as a potential source of trouble... a poster you don't get on with is going to be the same everywhere so you'll fall out with them at some point anyway. It isn't one post as such that would make you block them, IMO. I'll tend to wait 24 hrs or so to see if I still fell the same way but having the last word isn't that important anyway...you'll waste so much time and energy if you insist on doing that for long... and frankly you should have better things to do.. As it happens I clashed with Nigel more than most but I did quite like his heart on sleeve type thing so I still responded to his posts...
We use two KAM power bars. They are great and very bright. For examples
This is a useful reference as you want to see how bright over how big a spread. We used a Thomann Starville, IIRC, and whilst the floor pedal and stand were flimsy and have since broken, the actual all-in one light bar with 4 Leds is very very good for the money, IMO. They have to skimp somewhere for the price and a controller and stand are easy to pick up. I haven't used the Kam version but I think our single bar would be pretty close to the pic with 2 bars.. as a reference. Generally we light up and area 3 x4 mtrs easily and for larger areas we add a few floor spots. For 4mtrs by 5, 2 towers would work easiliy as far as decent spread and cover goes, IMO.

I flicked through all the tracks and a few things struck me that I would focus on...as a punter. Sound is very samey in that I hear a lot of gtr and the same type of sound and style. This could get a bit wearing if the crowd aren't with you right away..which can be the nature of pubs..i,e indifference. Vocals are interesting but the whole band might suffer from an underwhelming performance. The tracks and delivery are too easy to ignore and therefore drift away from. Nothing grabs you much. As for a video, I don't think you need get one as audio should be enough ... but I have to say, these tracks aren't selling you. If you are going to be different....and there is nothing wrong with not wanting to be like 100 other bands.. then you need to be able to carry your particular quirky angle. You seem to a be a listening band rather than a participation band and that might be hard to get a gig...unless the songs themselves are especially strong. I just think the band need to give it more beans and get up and at them. It is too easy to switch off...which is why I skipped through the tracks. Nothing offensive there but nothing grabs me..?? Sorry to be a bit blunt..
-
I'm very happy to say 2... If I had a new one made, I'm pretty sure it would mean I would sell a current one. They are pretty versatile as far as I am concerned and so is my playing style. Both are 5's and both are strung with wounds. I don't have any call to change them around but if I did, I would. I'd likely change them back pretty quickly tho..

Must say, all the GK amps I've used have been too grindey for me. Must admit I didn't get masses of time on each one but I didn't like any of them.
If I understand this correctly (and it is not your clearest post!) then we should hopefully have the answer to this on friday when we try the amp through other cabs, and other amps through my cab.
Yes... have to say first thing I would have done myself, but then I come from a few years back when affordable gear was all degrees of poor and you had to pay silly bucks for good stuff..which was out of the question so I was always testing stuff to see which part of the chain was the let down. First decent amp I bought was an SWR400 which cost me £745 in 1991... that is still an expensive amp nowadays but it was and still is quality. It wont do super clean tho... I had a Hiwatt bass amp which was decent for a valve job. I see plenty of Sound City and FAL amps which were regarded as sh** back then and are now sort after..?? still can't believe that. Cabs.... before TE, most bass cabs were woeful and you needed a 215 or 410 just to get some bass up.. The chassis' would have been 50w per unit upwards...but at least they were more honest watts, iirc. That is why speakers like JBL, Gauss and EV were king... and PV did ok with the BW. Now, people have so much more choice The SVT fridge was a weedy cab in terms of power output but it was enough for the day. 8x80w ( 640w) is a decent handling cab now but a tad large..... it would be easier to make it 1200w today. But..as long as you didn't blow things up, you were ok, And SVT cabs did get blown up... I can't recall the number of times I played through a pretty ragged one. So, yes, I am very careful now with kit and what goes through it..and don't get me started on people with gain pedals...

Tho for though is a bit of a habit of mine as it saves time writing and is therefore akin to text-speak which I don't mind in an informal context... But I can and do write properly when I have to for the right audience so on BC it is short-hand at best. For that reason, I don't even bother with a spell checker here... Oh well.....
Personally I've never signed up to FB or Twitter either but I'm aware that millions have and it's obvious that there is a platform right there for doing all the stuff that established current sites like this and lots of others for a whole range of interets serve. I bet they are a pain to moderate though, almost 'ungovernable' I'd have thought. As I'm not on either I'm not even sure how they are administered, bans dished out etc - anyone?
FB allows sub groups where a person who sets up a page becomes admin....they then run it and accept members in a closed group. It can be useful, but people are tiring of the so called intrusion of FB rules. The people who formed it have made their money and users may or may not move on when they find something else. The trick to FB is to be careful what info you publish as with all these online things... knowledge is power and has value, IMO..
I have recently joined a band that has a few support gigs lined up, I sold my Orange TB recently which was left over after my last band (I wasn't planning on being in another band any time soon) and have just picked up a Genz Benz Shuttle 9.2 to replace it. However! The gigs we are playing will all be quite small and I will be playing through other people's cabs, I am just wondering if anyone has some tips to make sure I don't damage anyone's stuff? The Genz Benz puts out a whopping 900W @ 4 Ohms and I will be running a fairly dirty pre into the effects loop on the amp, I'm hoping the lovely dirt I get from the pedal will be distinguishable from the sound of an unhappy cab! Most things I have read say just keep an ear out, but I was wondering if anyone here had any more advice - I would be mortified if I damaged a cab. Cheers
Ooohhhh... difficult. as distortion is a double headed beast, IMO. The good thing is that you are running it thru the FX and the other good pointer is that you need to run a clean sound as well. I would make sure the clean sound is levelled the same as the distortion and not used as a gain boost. Unfortunately, many people use these pedals as exactly that and can put so much level into the front of the amp that you don't really know what you are hearing..the amp/gain signal straining/overloading or the pedal doing what it does, If it were me... I'd set up for clean and listen to the rig and how it performs, I'd give it my max attack that I would likely do on the gig and see if the speakers bottom out. If it cope with that, I'd level the distorted signal and assume all will be well as you have prooved a test didn't overload the cab. Thankfully, you seem a considerate chap. Hopefully the cab supplied will be more than a 210 and you can put some bass back thru the mons for yourself. Then just eq the level with the drums for onstage volume and do the adjustments with the monitors.. Make sure you soundcheck a song at full beans so you don't have to go back to the amp during the set as you don't have enough level. I hate sound checks where ppl don't put enough time into levels and so turn up thru their gig... what part of sound check do they not understand.. even if it is mainly for stage mixes..??
Totally agree. But some people seem to think that I can't possibly hold that view without being wrong! ...........
I'd like to hear the signal chain before I went that far.. Not sure I get warm=distortion as semantics either but like I say, you'd have to hear it to reconcile where you are coming from. Good or bad news...?? Your definition is a little off of the norm means the amp is ok and saleable as is and just isn't your cup of tea...or your definition is correct and the amp is faulty... ?? IMO, of course.
In the interest of openness, the chain of events was thus:

WaynePunkDude had his membership of Basschat withdrawn (ie. he got banned).
He disagreed with the decision and a heated discussion took place online (away from Basschat).
Some Basschat members, involved in this discussion, decided to boycott the forum as a show of solidarity towards Wayne.
The Mod team and Admins remain responsible for the decision to ban Wayne.
This leaves us open to accusations of conspiracy, but we have to live with that. The alternative is airing dirty laundry in public, which would be a far worse outcome. That might explain Nigel and Pete... and one or two others. But again, I don't know these guys off site so my post was a general point.

To my knowledge, I live with 30mins of WPD and we probably know and play the same places but I've never met him or been remotely likely to. Don't really know why that is..maybe our musical tastes are world's apart..?? So, no that is not my reason for posting the thread.
Hi icastle....and we'll said. What I was trying to say in a pretty sarcastic way about this ' good posters' thing was 'so what' ......let them go....I don't know who they are, and don't care. I am pretty new to this site, and enjoy a lot of what is on here. I have asked for advice, and help....and got it, without checking to see who was giving it to me. I was just glad of it when I needed it. What has become apparent in this thread is there is some sort of a pecking order with 'newbies' at the bottom of the heap, and the ' good posters' at the top. What a load of claptrap. We are all contributors, all have opinions, and all should be seen as equal within this forum.... The very fact that the thread is titled 'Where have all the good posters gone' (whoever they may be) makes me feel a bit second best. Who is to say I am not a good poster, or someone finds my stuff interesting. If Basschat disappeared in a puff of smoke, my life would not collapse...it's just a bunch of bass players talking bass type things and having a bit of fun. Leave it like that and enjoy it.
Well, since I started the thread I did indeed make a point asking what is good..?? If you asked me, I'd say good is not down to the number of posts rather than the content. So, someone making 10 posts a day could be more 'trival' than 1 single pertinent point and has more benefit that a few status update, for example. So, if there were such a ranking system maybe that criteria would be be relevant. I prefer posters, myself who can 'chat and debate' about issues/threads in OT.. but as long as it is an issue rather than a chat show. Others posters may be all about socialising. If someone had only 10 posts and all of them in 'Amps and Cabs' talking about a technical point, that is useful, IMO... and far better value, IMO, than 100 chats elsewhere, for me, But, that is just my feeling. If you want to be a good contributor..again, depending how you rate that, then contribute and get involved. As noted, the most visible and, IMO, regarded, new member is Blue. It stands to reason, that a good contributor will have a few posts to their name. again, IMV. And the reason, I 'miss' a few is because they had substantial input, and were highly visible, and made good points..some of which I agreed with, but some I didn't but the latter didn't make them useless at all. For myself, I can quite easily move on and not hold a grudge over a point if the point was made reasonably. My question wasn't really over what makes a poster good, I just wondered why they left and of course, people come and go all the time, but this was almost a cull. Now, I don't suggest they got banned at all...but something overnight, almost, made them leave and I noticed. That is all..no real agenda over this. I hope a few free up some time and come back, but I know quite a few will not...
THIS!
Best get out there and try a few then... or you'll be hostage to someone else's 'preconception'

Do you/your band rehearse with full gigging set-up?
JTUK replied to Lozz196's topic in General Discussion
Interesting point about rehearsing in a circle. Anyone find it difficult to subsequently play in a line at a gig? Anyone rehearse in a line, or as you would at a gig? .....................
No.
