Anyone using Barefaced compact 15 with a big valve head(200watt)?
JTUK replied to Subthumper's topic in Amps and Cabs
I used my Buster 200 with a Gen 2 Compact and it was ok for a few gigs but the Buster needs lots of speaker area to be loud. Most of the time I would run the Master flat out. Even my Walkabout would struggle with the Compact with or without FOH and we were not a loud band. 2 Compacts would be fine and can be bought for a good price secondhand.
This is odd thinking, IMO.. Speaker is supposed to be able to be pushed very hard/loud, yet some amps struggle to do that so you have to buy two cabs to do the job that one should be able to do..??? -
Get that and the verbal contract therin but, poor communications from the buyer caused this issue as has been mentioned. So, unfortunately for the buyer, cost him the item. Learning point?
Well, I don't see the newbie complaining here about it...and I don't know what he said to make the seller put it on hold, but all we have is one side of the story. We seem to not have a definition of 'hold'
Blimey. Is this thread still running? My four penn'orth, for what it's worth, is that goods belong to the seller until money changes hands.
Or..if you've put it on hold, you've agreed to sell it to that person.. If someone said to me they were holding it for me, and then sold it, I'd be well p*****d off. And, so it appears, was the newbie..???
-
I wouldn't do it. Commercial hirers are covered by insurance if it gets damaged. You won't be and risk losing a friendship if there's a problem.
I'm employed on the night so I'll be there for the gig...so will be close enough to keep an eye on it.

These things come to a head at some point and IMO, bands are never equal so my way of dealing with it is to put a monetary figure on the work you do. Of course, you have to generate and preside over money for that to work but this is where being grown up needs to kick in quickly. People need to realise that if ALL they contribute is the music side, then nothing else will get done unless someone does it...?? This doesn't make you a dictator but it does give you a voice on that aspect and also you become the driver...?? If people don't recognise or respect that..or have time for it..( it all amounts to the same thing of not getting anything done ) then if you stop doing that stuff, the band will slowly wind down and fade away... If that is what they want then so be it... you know what you'll likely do next. Artistic issues versus working practices... but one is no good without the other. They need to understand that.
-
And Band 1 will more likely get a dep if needed as the material is more typical. As you say, no one band stands out but you want to play live so I'd go with the band that is gigging. The only thing that would make me think again is what sort of gigs are band 2 looking to do as Band 1 will be pubs and more pubs and then a few pubs after that..??
-
I've just run gain AND drive at zero and I get volume. I wouldn't say this is usable but it would play.. I normally run gain at 12, master at 12 and drive at 2... Bass is around 10 and this setting would do a pub gig with a 'clean' sound if I upped the volume to around 1pm. FWIW, I don't consider the drive to be gainey or driven, tbh... or not compared to a valve pre amped unit..
-
But I wouldn't go to the 'hold' stage unless the guy said he was definitely having it. It is not a hold otherwise..?
-
I'm in Kent and the gig is only about 20 miles from me. I'm bass tech-ing it now so deal is done and the invoice is going in
-
You can be too cheap tho... and you don't want to be associated or determined by that fee.. I'd price fairly... and expect to be well looked after. If you are a side show to the main event you have to be reasonable about your value.. I wouldn't do it for pub rates tho...but it may be a gig WORTH doing... so your call..?? We generally price gigs as we feel we have a 'worth' and that worth is not anywhere near what we can get in a pub. We accept that.
-
I was going to say the same as EBS... you need to pair the amp with another cab and eliminate whether the amp is faulty. It may well be..as no one who has a TH seems to recognise this issue. It may also be a bad pairing which may be an issue if you tune a cab to HAVE to be driven hard. My general feeling is that Class D don't have much guts to start with.... but that is another issue that isn't, for the most part, too obvious to a lot of peoples ears..or they compromise because weight of the amp is the main selling point..?? Definitely run with another cab to point the issue at amp or cab..???
-
Do you lower your fee if there's only the bar staff, two old gents playing dominoes and a dog..?
I've always thought this is the counter argument when bands want to push the market rate.. If bands want their fee regardless, then they might want to consider that the gig factors in a 'loss' figure for some nights and that figure has to come out of the 'profit' figure on the more successful gigs..?? This is why pub rates have stuck so low, IMO...as the LL needs to balance the month's rota's success rate.against the poorer attendences. Around here, there are very very few banker bands who will draw anytime, any day, IMO.
-
Well, it's a consideration but no, not really. We generally have bands or rates for the type of gig it is...and I don't like the idea of charging more just because the market can take it. I would rather charge more for the hours on site, what is takes to do the extra work involved and them silly things like travel and parking. But, by the same token, we charge a lot more for London for the all round hassle and the fact they would probably think the band was not good enough if you were too cheap. A friends band ..who do good weddings and corporate full time, would want close to 80% of the ticket fee ..which I thought was a very very high percentage. They eventually settled for £2000 from gross sales of £3500 and they took care of everything extra like sound and light engrs. Assuming gross sales were achieved this sounded workable but put all the stress on the promotion.. they got the fee regardless.
the Joint in london will hire you an ampeg 8x10 plus an svt 3 for £40/day and audio hire in kilburn will hire you an SVT2 plus 8x10 for £65 obviously that doesn't include delivery but is it worth risking your rig for so little money?
Agree, I think I'll price it to make him go elsewhere... surprised on those London rates tho...

If I had received comms that made me want to hold the item, then I'd give the guy more than 3.5 hrs before I looked around for someone else and taking it off 'hold'. I'd at least send a message saying I had other 'buyers' and I'd only keep the item on hold for 24hrs if I didn't hear back in that time with proper details to advance the sale. Then the onus would be on the buyer to comply... 3.5 hrs is a bit of an insult, IMO. No wonder the newbie wasn't impressed. I wouldn't expect buyers here to jerk you around... and the whole point of this place for sales is that it isn't the usual market place..??
-
The spec request was they wanted a 810, Ampeg, EBS or Eden for a one-off date and obviously a few people offered to provide a rig. So, if they wanted such a specific rider then they must know how much that sort of rig is worth. As its a muso mate, I think I'll say £45 and they garauntee to return it in perfect order. I'd prefer it to be flightcased but it is obnly covered. The cabs are VVGC. As I said, I wish I'd not gotten involved and should have thought it thru..
Choose a figure but include a damage deposit of the value of the gear, refundable if it returns OK?
Very sensible and prudent.... but it's a favour to a 'mate' and altho I think there is a budget for it, it isn't a true commercial project. I kind of wish I'd kept my mouth shut
-
I wouldn't, unless I could go with it to guarantee its safety!
That is an option, but will bump up the cost..
-
If a friend/promoter asked if you'd hire out a rig, what would you charge and why...? Also, what would you hire out?
-
Try telling Anthony Jackson that... or Mike Gordon... or Phil Lesh... or... PA speakers have made some of the most awesome onstage rigs.
Yeah right, they use old PV stage monitors

Fender jazz bass USA vs Mexico vs Japan (video!)
JTUK replied to guitarbank's topic in General Discussion
Rosewood with both pickups. Maple with bridge Not keen on either neck pickup sound but then I don't favour that sound anyway. Again, don't like the tone off on either and I wouldn't dull down a sound to that degree either. Not overly sold by the slap sounds on both pickups on either bass. Could live with both, could live without as well, easily enough. -

I'm pleased that I prefer the USA ones almost every single time. They stand out with the far better character in the sound to my ears. Didn't like the tone off tests though...who would do that..??? The Jap and Mex wouldn't register as options on the basis of that test with those parameters, IMO -
Recording discipline - your top tips for a young band
JTUK replied to The Admiral's topic in General Discussion
If they're going to use a click track then get some practice using one first if they've not used one before. Not as simple or as easy as it sounds. Steve
I'd advise them to run a mile from a click... so the recording process needs to legislate for this, but a young band concentrating on click is going to likely destroy the drummers ability to 'groove'... Playing with a click and grooving is a very high end skill and not many can do it. They may be able to do one or the other but not together as this sorts the men from the boys. AFAIK, the session has passed..?? so it would be nice to hear some feedback on the experience..??
