FINISHED-ish : Budget P Bass Bitsa Build
PaulThePlug replied to PaulThePlug's topic in Build Diaries
Sanded neck n body from 400 to 3000 Still a bit of cutter burn and the Danish Oil dirtyed up the end grain... After oiling gave body n neck some Warwick Finishing Wax... End result is a little warmer finish but still natural rather than a tint or stain, and less anemic looking than when unfinished. Next... Decal 'n String Tree and Machine Heads... Pickups 'n Electrics... Then Neck On, (bit of a 'Neck Screw' issue...) Bridge On (Left the strings in the bridge...) -
Various templates on line... Google and look at 'Images'

Mate!... BINGO! Howz about a Fender Mustang Bass Control Plate... size? maybe?
-
Nice... Real Nice... Dont hide the burst! From the earlier 'Pickguard' pics it wasnt obvious that there us next to no pickup routing, and no pickguard screw holes. I would defo be going no main plate, and a little 'lick' of a comma shape, ala P Scratchplate for the control cavity... A P version on the Jazz Bell Plate! Trace and cut out a little mock up out of card... just for fun. would look so original and unique. If its that small, we could allow it in tort...😉 that erplaz / brian bloke may even have an off cut!

Sounds like ya sorted... Can't see a thing mind!

Moloko... Pleasure Seaker or Time is Now?

have a look on the ibanez website... they have loads of old catalogues from the 80s... http://www.hoshinogakki.co.jp/pdf/ibanez/catalog/1982EB.pdf I'd say £220 is reasonable to low compared to reverb the bay etc... What model? 34" or 32" If its fun then then its prolly worth it. as for the pickup, perhaps the plate is to fit a slightly diffetent size J?

I'd go with the 'Body as a Jig' approach, At least to mark the holes, and while its in is nothing to drill em for the screw The neck pocket holds the neck, and ensures the angle of fir, thats what it needs... Try one?
-
Nice... when i drilled the neck, i had it in the pocket... used a drill that was a good fit in the body hole to start, just the pointy bit, just to center tip for the hole, and kind of counter sink the neck at the start... then worked out the depth and put electrical tape as a flag, then more tape around the drill shank to pack out, using the body holes as a jig to get the hole on the neck vertical... or at least aligned and centered to the body holes... and less likely for the drill bit to wander, if the dowl is harder or softer you got hold of a pillar drill which may help, but may need some sort of rest to keed the neck flat... I used a simple whirrly hand drill to go by feel. Pics n keep it coming...

Love the chair...

Thanks All The No Nonsense Danish Oil i got from Screwfix is quite clear... just brings out the grain a bit, maybe making the wood look a little warmer, rather than give much in the way of tint. Gonna make an effort and get on with it next week...
-
Yep Natural in Danish Oil... Chrome it is then... First thoughts. Style over Fashion...
-
@EJWWThanks... My First Budget Bitsa Build... Still needs neck n body sanding and oil finishing, don't come much simpler...
-
^ There is always one... Sandwich?.. Ham, Cheese or Jam?... NO! i haven't got any Tuna! 😉
-
All Simple style... Chrome matches the hardware and is familiar... Full meaty Dome to go with the Curve of the meaty high mass ish bridge... Strat Hat is Fender Family and a classic, but maybe a little out of place on a bass... I like the Big Volume and Small Tone of the Jazz, but on the P?..
-
The Jazz knobs are covering the body holes...
-
A change from the 'Which Scratchplate?' this Bank Holiday's dilema is 'Which Knob?' Initialy it was a nice weighty Vanson Chrome full Dome as a modern take on the classic P style, Then after i decided on Cream Pickup covers, Got Strat n Jazz knobs in cream.

From reading some of the above... Loud Gigs, Riding Bikes and Wind Roar, I now where foam plugs... and more recently Music mostly via Headphones... I get a more a low freq boom type resonance... than a high pitch ringing or buzzing or hissing. I wear earplugs to sleep although you can hear the sounds within your head, air and fluid etc, ticking clocks, central heating coming on, idleing cars, a fan, snoring wife... anything like that drives me mad! Recent change in headphones has shown a reduced volume in my left ear, even swapping the headphones round. Tried a few on line hearing and headphone freq tests, This thread has now prompted me now over 50 to book a free hearing test st specsavers, just to see (or hear!)
