1. Charity gig. Great set up with a hired in lighting rig but despite playing a big range of stuff from Brown Eyed Girl to Basket Case, it never really sparked off. Most of the people hadn't seen each other for 10 years so spent the night chatting and catching up rather than dancing. Even the DJ couldn't lure em up.
2. Fender P: nice shape dull sound Fender J: fat body and skinny neck. more neck dive than a bangkok street walker Stingray: great looks and sound but you need to lose some weight. Status: ooh, graphite. could I ever play a headless and not look silly?
3. There's a monster Warwick head and cab in the used section: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=48217
4.
http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/pro...-Bag?sku=541692 Looks perfect to hold all my toys when just doing grab and go gigs I assume since it's made under the Musicians Friend brand it will be made under another name as well hopfully with internation distribution
Looks cool - pricey though.
5.
12 minutes for singers to check their makeup and do any last minute important text messaging. 3 minutes for soundcheck.
6. £146? That's crazy. Surely it's up to the event to sort this, rather than you guys? It's a sad state of affairs that as musicians we're being asked for this sort of stuff. That and PAT testing. It's all "pass the buck" compo culture. People don't seem to have accidents anymore, it's always 'someone else's' fault!
7.
Working out where everything goes is the biggest issue.
It's the arse ache for cover bands that. Every venue is different and there's usually not enough space anyway, so you usually waste time scratching your head working out how the hell you're going to fit into the space, who's going where and then wiring it all up!
8.
We're a four-piece (drums, two guitar, bass, two vocals), and it usually takes us about twenty minutes to load in and set up, and less than ten to soundcheck. We've learned from experience that the easier you make the job for the soundguy, the more likely he is to make you sound good. Plus we always find it really irritating when other bands take hours.
I'm guessing you're an originals band! Try that with your own PA and add another 40 mins.
9. 1hr. Most of that is the PA, to be honest. 3 of us all have powered wedges and mics. Plus a couple of mics on the drum kit = lots of cables. Usually I set my bass stuff 10 mins before we go on!
10. Hi Oli - are you planning to gig this amp or is it just for home/rehearsals? £2k is a lot of dosh - you could kit yourself out nicely for £500.
11. I vote for varispeed. Some of those old Stones recordings sound terrible!
12. Looks cool Wayne - thought about swapping out the pickup? The Nordstrand one is very good, it's about £70.
13.
Cue four police cars, a police van and an ambulance.
Saved you bring a lighting rig.
14. Three in a row - good work. Good setlist too - almost the same as ours!
15. My Warwick 411 is a 4-ohm. Competant cab, does the job nicely without farting or rattling. Comes w/Eminence drivers. Was about £350 from Andertons.
16.
Pretty much a guide to life right there as I'm sure you'll agree Al. If anyone wants to be successful at any almost anything confidence and experience is the key. To do stuff when then don't have the confidence requires bravery and the ability to distinguish between actual and imagined risks. So...smell the fear then do it anyway.
Failing that, just learn blues scales.
17.
Something strange happened to me on the way, I’ve never felt it before but I was actually nervous – I don’t do nervous.
Haha - I know exactly where you're coming from Al. I did an open mic last year on guitar and felt exactly the same. It was weird - done loads of gigs without feeling any nerves - but this was horrible. I also did another one on bass and like you felt out of my depth. I mentioned this to the frontman of my band who's played hundreds of gigs in loads of different bands. He hates going to them too!
18. Great gigging basses these. Don't put off by the switches, they're pretty simple but allow you to get a P, J or Stingray sound with a quick flick. The pre-amp really cuts through the mix.
19. Bit of shameless self-promotion, me thinks.
20. Lovely discussion - but this is the for sale section!
21. +1 to all of the above. Esp the bit about feel. Make sure it feels really nice to play. If it doesn't, put it back and try another.
