Trace Elliot - Help!

Recommended Posts

I've been a TE fan for years. I'm searching out a new bass stack at the moment - dream kit would entail:

Solid state head, minimum 250
4x10 with horn
1x15
1x18 (for that extra tickle) :)

I've been given a bass stack to play with for a week or so to trial. It comprises solely of TE gear made in the 80's. it's all TE original stuff. the only bit missing from my wish list is the 18". they're well used items, show their age, a bit of bruising but sound great. they have the tone of the original stacks, fat bottom end and crisp top. they are built for purpose. the photos show them as they are. both the EQ switching buttons on the amp are broken - they are operated by a rocker foot pedal. other than that, it works fine.

The issue is that i have no idea where to start with regards putting a value on these things. can you help? estimates of value for each individual item would be great. thanks.

Jeff, there are some things missing from your description....

2 hours of live/full volume direct comparison trial of heads:

AH150 MkV
AH200 Ser 6
AH250 Mk2
AH250 MkV

Through cabs individually and as stacks:

Trace 410Mk2
Trace 410H Ser 6
Trace 15+10 Ser 6
Trace 1x15 MkV
Trace 15+18 Mk1

And to confirm tonality preference:
Hartke USA 410
Marshall Jubilee 1x15

And to confirm stack is reequired:

AH150 Mk2 1x15 combo with/without extension cab

In every combination for two hours.

Throwing in a Premium ++ grade XLR-XLR and Jack-Jack speaker leads.

Then, pull a Mk2 1x15 to match the favoured 410. Finding a problem with the driver, replace with an original replacement Fane 200 and bring the cab to town in time for a trial.

Now let's see...

MkV AH250 with footswitch and silent fan and working UV unit (full tech checkup 2 weeks ago)
Matched cab stack - clean/just a few knocks and the usual logo scrapes black painted solid ply with orig 50w Celestion 10"s and Fane 15" - try to find one of those, let alone a stack
With top grade leads

And promising solid tech support in the event of anything emerging in the first wee while of ownership.
And letting you have it for a full rehearsal with no deposit.
And allowing swap back and full trade in if you change your mind on amp or cab based on the prices discussed.
And paying by cheque.

All in all, a milk 'n honey tone powerhouse dark chocolate thunderstack that you personally chose in preference to some of the stuff you have listed in your brief.

Thanks,

I stretched their legs last night for 4 hours in a studio. Trialled the units beside a brand new Peavey rig, 4x10, 1x15 & 450 head. The TE blew it away. it was a unanimous decision.

Can't help but agree with the 'powerhouse dark chocolate' term - the bottom end is super thick and absolutely solid with a sharp top end that cuts through the rest of the band. a great set of gear!

Really appreciate the trial. shame it's not going to work out. I'll drop the gear back round later this morning.
Many thanks :)

I always do that - you can't tell what a rig can do by noodling in a corner of a shop.
And I always give an honest price behind all the extra help.
I have no idea where the "what's it worth" thing is coming from.
All the shops around phone me for pricing advice!

Anyway... I can continue to enjoy the stunning sound of a full stack of ply cab fatness and smooth, efficient drivers being spanked by 250 'old Trace' watts. It's what put Trace/British bass on the map and hasn't been done as well by anybody since.

There are other great sounds, but none better....
