Scruffy Shergold Marathon on eBay
ShergoldSnickers replied to Paul S's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I know the body shape could vary a bit - the horns in particular - but the body shape just looks a little mis-shapen compared with other examples I've owned and seen. There should be a guard covering the lower horn, and I'd want the plastic ash-tray bridge cover. I'd need a really good look at it before I bought, as from the photos it just doesn't look 'right'. Example here for comparison. -
Did a gig in Hull on Saturday. Managed to leave a jacket behind, and the drummer turned up late due to locking himself out of his house and couldn't make the sound check, although he kept us informed from the start. The consequent monitor mix was not brilliant, and the guys on the PA had the front of house sound far too loud for the venue. Next time we take a tame sound tech along. We would have been far better off getting very cosy and relying on our backline. Enough moaning - we learned a valuable lesson.

Just got back from a gig at FruitSpace in Hull. PA far too loud out front apparently, and the monitoring was a bit inconsistent. As was my playing, so a one-all draw at home there. To be honest I'd have preferred to use just the back line, but there you go.

Oh oh.... reputation system. That'll modify some behaviour. Or will it?

Eden WT550 and S12T. Gets another outing in Hull on Saturday. -
⬆ Listen to this man. A great band is one that you instantly see as being far greater than the sum of the parts. You lot would baffle any firm of accountants. There is nothing groundbreaking about what you do in terms of the music, but the delivery and taste it leaves in the air is intoxicating, and that makes it all a bit special. All I ask is.... remember me when you are famous. Oh, and Skank.

Imagine a cab like Stephen Fry combined with Arnie, but without the weight of either. Articulate and muscle-bound. That's what you get.
I joined the club yesterday too
What 'cher get? 'Tis one of those things that appeals so I'd be interested to hear your thought after a bit of time living with it.

I borrowed a Chapman Stick from a mate for a week. I got absolutely nowhere with it. I decided it would be best to take up piano first, then guitar, and then try again. Needless to say... I didn't bother.
Nope, you are very misguided, diameter has nothing to do with tone at all.
Agreed. You only have to think about those microscopic drivers used in mp3 player earphones. Plenty of good quality bass in mine. For live music sound levels though, once you get much below a 10" speaker, you are into serious multiple arrays to get enough air volume moving, but it can be done. It's all down to cost, practicality and the almost inevitable weight issues, rather than some immutable law of physics.

Saw Jack Bruce the other night
ShergoldSnickers replied to tayste_2000's topic in General Discussion
Saw him at a Leeds Uni gig in '77. He was playing a Dan Amstrong plexi – "I've only using this so you can see my legs". He was kalied to say the least, leading to a few fluffs, but most of it was surprisingly reasonable considering the state he was in. -
I've specced the blue ones for the Marseer 5 that Robbie at RIM is building. Looks like the band will have to get used to playing in the dark then.

Am i the biggest idiot ever? You decide.
ShergoldSnickers replied to EdwardHimself's topic in General Discussion
It all matters not. You have an Eden Metro combo, and that alone is sufficient reason to cast disparaging looks at any self-induced misfortune. -

Silica Gel desiccant bag inside bass case
ShergoldSnickers replied to Len_derby's topic in Bass Guitars
All silicon dessicants have only a small life span, in heavy humidity conditions their effect can last only 3 to 4 months, they are not regenerating so once they've done their job, that is it, they don't absorbe moisture for ever. We use large bags of the staff (5 kilos each) in ship containers loaded with cocoa beans from Ghana once they reach UK and the cargo is discharged, the bags of large silicon pellets is disposed of.
Just add more water until they properly gel up, and sell 'em on to cosmetic surgeons. 5 kilos should be about right. -

2 x 210s: Vertical or horizontal stacking?
ShergoldSnickers replied to 4 Strings's topic in Amps and Cabs
Not if you do it right, which is with varying foam thickness across the cone. See the Geddes model. The amount of attenuation offered by 3/4 inch of foam is infinitesimal. The diffraction is fairly significant at the shortest wavelengths, enough to cause them to literally bounce off the walls of the foam's individual cells, redirecting their paths, while longer wavelengths pass though unimpeded.
Analogy? Take a torch and a sheet of glass. Clear glass gives a focused beam from the torch, as the beam is relatively unaffected. Frost the glass however and you'll get scattering, widening the beam. I'm guessing this is something like? -
So what we have is a couple of protaganists here who are largely ignored or unknown by the rest of the industry. When you start seeing independant reviews posted ..as opposed to someone who wants to 'review' his latest buy, to a lot of other 'fans', and when you start seeing these sold commercially and in pretty visable places then you might get past forum hype.
You probably never will see these cabs widely advertised or highly visibly sold, as the mass market isn't where they are targeted. BFM is after self-build, a minor sub-set of bass players, and Alex has neither the time or capacity to manufacture at scale. They are niche products. There are thousands of niche products out there that earn their manufacturers a living, the mass market is not necessarily the place to be. Numbers sold tell you absolutely nothing about the quality, only where a product is on it's design/life cycle at the very best, and only then in comparison with its own historical data. It's more to do with what other manufacturers don't do, than what BFM or Alex have 'invented' and put in. There is no new wheel, the theory and methods are already out there - they've just been ignored by most manufacturers, due to cost, laziness, manufacturing complexity etc. Alex does at least have a trial period whereby if you are not satisfied, you can return the cab and get your money back minus carriage costs. Speaks volumes to me. If I've been had, then Alex is far cleverer than I'd imagined, and would be a risky strategy on his part given the scrutiny his claims have already had, and the number of apparently trustworthy ears that have bent his way and been positive. Having said all that, criticism is good – it may get people who are thinking of buying a cab to do more research, to take their time and try a few extra cabs. Always a good thing. -
Lo all. I just finished sanding down a recently bought maple neck back to the bare wood and would like to know the best way to treat it. I see a few members use Danish oil on their necks, but what about protecting the fingerboard from wear? Suggestions invited, Ta. MM
MM – the Danish oil dries to a hard finish. A few coats of this should protect the maple. Keep an eye on it and reapply from time to time. Marine varnish or the dreaded epoxy resin are alternatives. I am known to recklessly tap, slap and pull the strings occasionally, and also now use Elixir nano web roundwounds. Wear to neck? After 30 years virtually nil. Wear to me is an entirely different matter though. :roll eyes: Edit: Good start, the first two answers are diametrically opposed. Maple is pretty tough stuff and I've stopped worrying. Try the Danish oil, but monitor it closely and see how it goes. I might have been lucky.

Great set of build posts here. Did you heat or steam the ply around the milk churn, or gradually apply pressure dry and at room temp? Love the leaning tower of Pisa photo.

This is a bit of a result, so I'll wish you all the good luck I can and I hope it all goes off brilliantly. I was at the first WOMAD in 1982. Still ranks as one of the best few days I've spent listening to music.

I usually apply Gaffa (or even better fumps' Jaffa tape) tape along all edges, corners and seams of the outer cardboard box, to stop the cardboard getting ripped at the places most vulnerable.
