Talking Bass Basic Fundamentals
Newfoundfreedom replied to Newfoundfreedom's topic in General Discussion
Thanks Stu. I'm actually the polar opposite to you. I had a few one on one guitar lessons years ago and I hated it. I found I would just zone out then I didn't know what was going on and it was just really uncomfortable and awkward. I'd much rather learn online then if I get distracted, don't understand something, or forget something from a previous lesson, I can just go back and revisit it. -
Has anyone bought the Basic Fundamentals course from Talking Bass? I've been playing for some time now, been in bands etc, but I've only ever really toyed with it, learned things from tabs or very occasionally by ear. Don't get me wrong, i can play, to an average level at least, my fingers move around make an approximation of something musical, but I'm massively lacking any kind of theory, and never really know where to start. I've spent hours on YouTube watching videos and lessons, but it's too much of a scatter gun approach. What I really need is something more structured. From what I've seen this course could be just the job. I've seen a few of Marks videos on YouTube and I really like his no nonsense, straight to business teaching approach. So has anyone done the course? Any opinions? Thanks

A bad gig for me is one where I have to leave the house.

The clue is in the original post.

Who influenced you to pick up and start playing Bass.
Newfoundfreedom replied to thebigyin's topic in General Discussion
No one. I'm not even really a fan of the bass per Se. To me it's part of the overall sound of a band, not a standalone instrument. So there have been many bands I've liked over the years, and many a bass riff I've liked as part of the overall sound of those bands, but I've never been attracted to, or particularly inspired by the bass alone. In fact the opposite is probably true. I can't stand over the top Jacko type bass noodling. It just sounds like a load of pointless noise. For me the bass should be the solid underpinning of a band. A foundation which the whole band builds on. Maybe that's not very exciting, but most none muso's wouldn't, and probably even shouldn't notice a good bass player. -
What's the postage price?

I've fancied several over the years, in not even too concerned about them needing a bit of work to be playable. Most things are fairly easy to sort. I've always been more worried about them being seized by customs and ending up out of pocket.

I've always found them absolutely superb too. It's very rare these days to find a company that's an absolute pleasure to do business with.

I think this thread is dangerously close to discussing one of the forums banned subjects, due to threats of a law suit.

I don't get it either. Never will. But each to their own. I far prefer a natural wood finish to anything painted anyway.

Great track. I really like that.

If you could wind back the clock and....

I think I'd have stuck with the recorder. I'd just about nailed Little Donkey when I inexplicably gave it up. I should have stuck with it. I could have been a virtuoso by now. -

How do people find musicians these days?

Active basses, jack in/jack out?
Newfoundfreedom replied to NancyJohnson's topic in General Discussion
Definitely. I usually use any old cheap 9v battery but a couple of weeks ago I decided to push the boat out and but a Duracell. Forgot to unplug after practice and by the next practice it was dead as a Dodo. £4 for one practice. Lovely! -
Can't hear anything for that fkin annoying piano.

For me it's not so much songs as whole albums I never tire of. Guns n Roses - Appetite for Destruction Iron Maiden - Seventh Son Alice Cooper - Trash Metallic - Black To name just a few.

Thanks. Built with my own fair hands. Well, renovated it at least. It was a big job but well worth the effort It used to be just old animal sheds and grain store until earlier this year.

I actually have 3 rehersal spaces ( this sounds like it should be on the "Meeting new people" - bullsh!t Bob threa) I have an amp and a couple of basses in my office, which is just a tiny room. I use this mainly to learn songs or grab a bass for a quick noodle when I'm working. Then there's my band practice room, which is a decent sized space where the whole band can practice. Then there's my BAR-N where we can have parties and play gigs. Sadly all now irrelevant as I no longer have a band to play with.

Worst and best versions of the same Beatles tunes
Newfoundfreedom replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
OK admittedly cheating slightly as it's John Lennon rather than The Beatles, but Yoko Ono's version of Imagine is not only the worst cover I've ever heard, but probably the worst sound I've ever heard, full stop. -
It can be quite weird that way. I've definitely done gigs that have been a game of two halves. Where I could easily have said sod it and packed up at half time, only for the second half to be superb. An even stranger one we had recently (actually it's happened a couple of times) was a gig where no one appeared to be really bothered, or even particularly listening. Then a couple of days later the band's Facebook page was full of praise saying we were a great band, played a great set, and how much everyone thoroughly enjoyed it. Maybe we were just playing to the introverts annual conference.
