  1. Something I didn't notice anyone mentioning is that your teacher may have some useful advice on bass choice once they have seen you play. They may also have a few basses you can try which would make your choice of next bass (because it's a when, not if!) a more informed one. So I would wait until you have had a few lessons before you decide if you think you can resist!

  4. I did the same thing a couple of weeks ago. Was just looking, but when I saw they had a Steve Harris P bass I wanted to feel the neck. Before you know it I'm playing a £3K custom shop through an Aguilar rig! Nowt like that for giving you GAS!!

[/quote] Even for the original band though there is approximation. Which is the definitive? The studio version or the live version? There is nothing wrong with trying to replicate the sound from a record exactly if you think that is a fun thing to do. If you can incorporate that effectively into a live set that's great. But I think being happy with your core tone is more important, and I think most listeners would enjoy the experience more. If a marching band were to play Superstition it wouldn't sound the same as Stevies original recording, but I'd still be dancing!

Bananarama weren't that bad. Music is more varied now, and there are tons of artists playing their own stuff. And Olly Murs might not be as good as George was, but Laura Marling probably is. I do agree about the TV 'talent' shows but I think that is a very narrow window on the modern 'pop' world. It staggers me how much variety is out there now. Granted, a lot of it is not to my taste at all. I can't get with any of the booty shaking stuff, and grime is another world entirely, but then I'm in my mid 40's so it wouldn't be right if I was into it! Doesn't detract from the fact that variety is out there. Take a look at some of the Mercury nominees over the last few years. Even just some of the artists who have been in discussion on this forum. Thundercat, Royal Blood, Rag n Bone man, Field Music. All current, all pop, all different!

Still, that doesn't matter when music makes you want to groove, and this music does.

  16. I like the look of the Tech 21 head. I'm sure paired with a Barefaced Two10 it would do the business. You could then get another Two10 later if you felt the desire for more air shifting.
  17. I have a Simon and Patrick 12 string that is very nice. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another guitar from them. That said, I think it's probably harder these days to buy a crap acoustic for £500 than a good one. A day spent going round Glasgow guitar shops trying out what's in your budget would not be wasted.

    I have a Simon and Patrick 12 string. Cedar top and a lovely full ringing sound. Not the easiest to play, though I expect if I spent more time playing it would get easier. Decent mid priced guitars though and well worth a look.
  19. All the others have been wider so can't see why they'd change now. Still fancy one of these but the cherry isn't doing it for me.
  20. If it was me I would hold on until you find a good deal on a MIM Precision. Deals do come up every now and again. But I'm the sort of person who, assuming the spec I want is available, would rather have a Fender Precision bass than a copy of a Fender Precision bass, licensed or not. YMMV.
  21. Hopefully it will be a bit easier to get hold of one now.
  22. Part of the problem is that companies want to announce new products at NAMM, so if they think it will be out within the year then that's where they announce. Other industries that have a big trade show suffer the same problems. The answer is, if you see something you like the look of, note it, but order nothing until they are available. This is always a possible issue with pre-orders. Not that that negates your frustration this time around. Just a tip to avoid it in future!
