1. How rough are the gigs you are planning on playing? Hit folk on the head with your bass Sid Vicious style rough? Is not the point of buying a really nice bass that you love, playing it? Or do you intend to just play the '64 at home? Can't you gig with it but be careful to use the guitarists '59 Les Paul if you need to club someone over the head, and don't leave the '64 unattended?
2. I was recently looking for some flats so read the threads on the subject. Got a bit shocked at the price of some of the options, especially when folk are saying you might not like this brand, or that brand might not suit. I decided to start at the lowest priced but still often recommended ones and bought some Fender flats. Thought I would work my way up the price bands until I found ones I liked. Verdict? Love 'em. Silky smooth, not too high a tension for me and sound good to my ear. Granted, I'm not the worlds expert on the subject but I'm happy enough.
3. There was a Jack Casady case in the classifieds very recently.

77 P Bass

It's interesting to hear the opinions on what a re-fret would do to the value. I looked online at a YOB bass recently from a retailer and it was clear that it would need a re-fret to be properly playable. To me, that same bass would be worth a bit more with a good quality re-fret than in it's current state. Is that because I want to buy a player rather than a collectible?
5. I have to admit I'm loving the green colour. I'm not sure that the jump in price will mean a corresponding jump in quality as I think the price rise is due to global economic factors. But then again any instrument for £1K should be fantastic anyway. The fact that it's now £1.5K should not diminish that.
6. I bought a Boss pedal from Kevin. Item is perfect, communication was great and delivery very fast. Top trader and would happily deal with again.
7. I just watched the Smiths episode last night. I thought Bea did a pretty good job tbf. As you point out, it's usually more of a metal/rock/blues thing going on, and of course that is what Bea plays so it's more natural for him, but considering how much of a genius Johnny Marr is I thought it was a good effort. Not perfect, but pretty good. I also watched the 'Best of' jams from Danish Pete and Mick (not that one) Taylor last night. Fantastic! I could listen to those two all day. Regarding All about the bass. Maybe they need to drop Lee Anderton. Perhaps they could find the bass world version of Mick Taylor to pair up with Nathan and things would be better?
8.
I like their bass VID clips on youtube. Funny, interesting and some nice playing too.
Funny that, because I've always thought they were pretty terrible, relative to their other productions. The 'sound like' series with Bea and Matt, and the Guitar paradiso one with Danish Pete and Mick (not that one) Taylor are excellent. Something about the chemistry between Nathan and Lee just not being there.
9.
Then you can get a synth player with a cape.
10. I can't quite work out why, but I'm loving that Yamaha.
11. Thanks guys. Mk1 sounds closer to my skill level. I've said this before, but it's worth repeating. I think it's fantastic that you are all sharing your knowledge and experience on here, and as someone who is now a bit less clueless than I was before I read these threads I appreciate that. Thanks for clarifying on the driver Steve. I mistakenly picked up somewhere that Mk2 had different driver.
12.
I would recommend building the MK2 but it is more complex You could put the new port into the MK1 but the baffle is smaller and so there will be np room for upgrading later. I suggest you what until Ghost-bass and Stevie have finalised the drawings and then decide. As far as I know they ar a few days away. I will do a MK1 v Mk2 comparison later if it helps.
A Mk1 vs Mk2 comparison would be very helpful thanks. There are a few reasons why I'd be favouring the Mk1 build to the Mk2. Cost and complexity of the tweeter and crossover, the port design being a bit more involved, and the slightly more 'hi-fi' nature of the Mk2. A concern would be that the Mk2 without the crossover and tweeter would not perform as well as the Mk1 due to the different drivers. I just wondered if the Mk2 bracing would be an upgrade to the Mk1 cab? From what I've read of those who have built a Mk1 it sounds ideal for me. The Mk2 might be extra everything when I don't need it IYSWIM.
13. It's early days for me as a bass player so this might not be worth the pixels it's written in, or it could be wisdom from a fresh perspective. Who knows? I'll play anything with four strings that someone will give me. I'm not going to buy a new bass unless I want to, and whatever I'm playing I'm going to try and make it sound like me. If that is not what someone is looking for then so be it. As a hobby it's supposed to be fun, and trying to be something you are not to please others is not my idea of fun. YMMV and all that.
14. GAS creates its own logic.
15. Cheers for the links. Haven't had a chance to look through them yet as I spent last night watching 'We Jam Econo' featuring some slightly more recent West Coast US luminaries! But I will get on it.
16.
I didn't have any covers for these. At least, I didn't until: http://www.ebay.co.u...K%3AMEBIDX%3AIT Chop the handles off those and they fit a treat!
Cheers for the info.
17.
Bracing is vital to the performance of this box - it's not an afterthought. I have the MkI and the MkII cabs in my workshop, and I can say without a shadow of a doubt that there is no comparison between them as far as panel stiffness is concerned. The 1 to 1.5kg that went into reinforcing the butt joints in the MkI is now doing a much more useful job stiffening the whole of the MkII cabinet.
So if someone was to build a Mk1 cab now (not wishing the extra complexity of a tweeter and crossover) would it be best to use a similar bracing pattern to the Mk2? Or does the Mk1 cab stand as is?
18. Good question. I've heard that it can work on white bodies as well to give a more vintage style white?
19. If you are not playing them, and you could use the money for something else nice, then by all means sell. In that case I'd keep the YOB and the Geddy. But if you don't need to free up the cash for something else just keep them. Sell them later when circumstances change.
20. Everyone knows the Grateful Dead! I even have one of their albums. But I'm going to have to look up Owsley 'Bear' Stanley. Every day is a school day.
21. This thread prompted me to have a good look at this bass and thanks to that gas syndrome I now quite fancy one of these too! But I also looked into Mr Casady as well. At only 43 I'm a bit young for Jefferson Airplane but he is also in Hot Tuna. Wow. Wish I'd heard of them sooner. Great stuff!
22. Bit of a thread resurrection perhaps but just wanted to say that cab looks fantastic. Very nicely done indeed. Have you got any update now it's been in existence for a wee while? And do you have a link for the grille cloth?
23.
I have a few Ps! I find the older the P the less the GAS Try it : ) Davo
You are a bad man!
24. I've just changed to using Tortex triangle picks and I'm impressed with the extra grip the larger size gives. Three picking points is a nice bonus too.
