  1. Did Dave Smart used to be at the Guitar Gallery in Summertown? I think I had his card once, years ago.
  2. My fretless album would be Unorthodox Behaviour by Brand X
  3. Jaco isn't on Hissing of summer lawns, it's Max Bennet and Wilton Felder. Did you mean Hejira, or Don Juan's Reckless Daughter?
  4. Surely this? You can feel the heat coming out of the speakers!
  5. You could fit a little thermal switch in-line with the fan. Screw the switch to the heatsink.
  6. From the basket code it looks like the 25th of June. If you can find a better example of the last figure on one of the other speakes that will be the year - pre 1970 from the date code format DD M Y as described here: http://www.bygonetones.com/celestion-date-codes.html From where the stamp is on the chassis the last character is probably an A dating it to 1968, which ties in with the back story. The cones look like the highly sought after Pulsonic from '68-'71 according to this: http://www.bygonetones.com/celestion-cones.html They are the 55Hz resonance ones, so possibly the cab was a bass cab?
  7. Iirc, the spec for the super Compact is 97dB as opposed to 98 for the original Compact. This and a playing in period might just account for the perceived difference in volume. The new driver might have less distortion too (can't really verify this ) and the cleaner sound could be cutting through the mix less due to fewer higher harmonics.
  8. Chic-tastic!
  9. do you need a license for the Minky?
  10. Definitely Greenbacks, shame the labels are missing, but they can be dated to within a range from the codes on the basket and the cone. I had a small Marshall bass combo (30W) that was factory fitted with 2 greenbacks. It didn't sound great tbh.
  11. Thanks for the suggestions folks, keep them coming! The Thump looks good value, does it really keep the speaker under control with bass going straight in?
  12. Something that would sound nice with modelled acoustic guitar (Variax), e.u.b. and bassy bass (old Hofner with flats) Budget maybe £200-300? This isn't for me, it's a friend who is at home most of the time as a carer. My initial thought was a small p.a. speaker that had decent d.s.p., but that might be a bit over budget, and ott for home only use. Any thoughts?
  13. does this figure imply that the 2 drivers are 98dB sensitivity?
  14. Hope you bought him a beer!
  15. Am I the only one who read this topic title as Guest Beer at gigs? Wishful thinking or dementia, I fear
  16. Yes, that is an irritation on the gain control. If you do come up with a decent resolution to this, please let me know. I'm a bit surprised they let this carry over from a guitar amp design. If anything, I would have thought you'd want to lift the bass content a bit to keep up with the increased harmonic content you get as the distortion kicks in.
  17. I wonder if similar applies to the CTM15? I don't really care for the "subtle" and interactive nature of these vintage tone stacks. I'm sure these are used so the marketing department can roll out the "all Valve" line, rather than being useful in real-world playing situations. The fix for your CTM100 sounds worthwhile though - well done for your persistence and Ashdown's solution.
  18. Looks like you've got some very handy mates!
  19. That in itself would be a good incentive for me to get up to speed on Reaper. I've been putting it off as it was a bit of a faff to even get the Zoom set up as the audio interface...
  20. Genius. I think I saw a clip of them playing in a pub in Tring. An accomplished bunch of musos.
  21. Was that Simon, by any chance?
  22. Good luck with the gig, should be great!
  23. The guy my band has been playing behind has an alternate music path where he plays his own stuff in electronica style. He lives in Berlin, so it's probably mandatory. It's not my favourite of his output by any means, but some may like it. Anton Barbeau: Antronica.
  24. Sounds like they need to employ some more folks there. You need a break during the day. It's, like, the law, or something!
