I would also add that the Hohner Jack Custom headless is one of the most comfortable basses to play, curvy in all the right places for me, light, and even the preamp sounded fine, though I mostly played it passive, as it sounded good like that. It worked really well as a fretless too (defretted myself)

Adjunct to this thread, I would advise anyone with this Hohner licensed Steinberger headless bridge to make sure the threads are really well lubricated with grease. I've had several old ones where the threads strip in the string pullers. Easily fixed using stainless Helicoil type inserts, then will be good for life. If I had kept mine, I would have done it with all of them. HTH

Can't you turn the surround round so the damaged bit is by the high string where you don't rest your finger?

Ruler, string, pencil, thumbtack, cardboard, scissors. Careful now! -
What ever happened to that Randy HOPE Taylor Moon bass.?
MoonBassAlpha replied to bubinga5's topic in Bass Guitars
I suppose I should be interested in Moon basses... -
Ha, I did the toboggan ride the first time I came here, yes, unscary, but sort of fun. Not done the elevator thing, I wouldn't get the Mrs near that, she was bad enough on the cable car! We come here a lot as it is so relaxing and beautiful. The jazz has been good too, proper hard hitting stuff, not the watered down populist stuff you get at some festivals.

Saw Jason Moran last night at Funchal Jazz festival (Madeira) The bass player was Tarus Mateen, playing a Marco bajo acoustico. http://www.marcoguitarsbass.com/index_archivos/Page381.htm Probably the most double bass sounding guitar I've heard, and double bass style action, from what I could see. Anyone come across these before? Btw, they followed Dave Holland, with Chris Potter, which was super, too.

My guess would be it's a level control for the line out.

Did Dave Smart used to be at the Guitar Gallery in Summertown? I think I had his card once, years ago.

My fretless album would be Unorthodox Behaviour by Brand X -

Jaco isn't on Hissing of summer lawns, it's Max Bennet and Wilton Felder. Did you mean Hejira, or Don Juan's Reckless Daughter? -
Surely this? You can feel the heat coming out of the speakers!
-
You could fit a little thermal switch in-line with the fan. Screw the switch to the heatsink.

Unexpected NCD. Marshall experts opinion please.
MoonBassAlpha replied to Thunderpaws's topic in Amps and Cabs
From the basket code it looks like the 25th of June. If you can find a better example of the last figure on one of the other speakes that will be the year - pre 1970 from the date code format DD M Y as described here: http://www.bygonetones.com/celestion-date-codes.html From where the stamp is on the chassis the last character is probably an A dating it to 1968, which ties in with the back story. The cones look like the highly sought after Pulsonic from '68-'71 according to this: http://www.bygonetones.com/celestion-cones.html They are the 55Hz resonance ones, so possibly the cab was a bass cab? -
Super Compact and GK MB500 combination is a bit underwhelming......
MoonBassAlpha replied to gjones's topic in Amps and Cabs
Iirc, the spec for the super Compact is 97dB as opposed to 98 for the original Compact. This and a playing in period might just account for the perceived difference in volume. The new driver might have less distortion too (can't really verify this ) and the cleaner sound could be cutting through the mix less due to fewer higher harmonics. -
Chic-tastic!

do you need a license for the Minky?

MoonBassAlpha replied to Thunderpaws's topic in Amps and Cabs
Definitely Greenbacks, shame the labels are missing, but they can be dated to within a range from the codes on the basket and the cone. I had a small Marshall bass combo (30W) that was factory fitted with 2 greenbacks. It didn't sound great tbh. -
suggestions for frfr solution for home use
MoonBassAlpha replied to MoonBassAlpha's topic in Amps and Cabs
Thanks for the suggestions folks, keep them coming! The Thump looks good value, does it really keep the speaker under control with bass going straight in? -
Something that would sound nice with modelled acoustic guitar (Variax), e.u.b. and bassy bass (old Hofner with flats) Budget maybe £200-300? This isn't for me, it's a friend who is at home most of the time as a carer. My initial thought was a small p.a. speaker that had decent d.s.p., but that might be a bit over budget, and ott for home only use. Any thoughts?

does this figure imply that the 2 drivers are 98dB sensitivity?

Gibson Thunderbird Studio IV bridge help
MoonBassAlpha replied to basshead56's topic in Repairs and Technical
Hope you bought him a beer! -
Am I the only one who read this topic title as Guest Beer at gigs? Wishful thinking or dementia, I fear
-
Yes, that is an irritation on the gain control. If you do come up with a decent resolution to this, please let me know. I'm a bit surprised they let this carry over from a guitar amp design. If anything, I would have thought you'd want to lift the bass content a bit to keep up with the increased harmonic content you get as the distortion kicks in.

I wonder if similar applies to the CTM15? I don't really care for the "subtle" and interactive nature of these vintage tone stacks. I'm sure these are used so the marketing department can roll out the "all Valve" line, rather than being useful in real-world playing situations. The fix for your CTM100 sounds worthwhile though - well done for your persistence and Ashdown's solution.
