1.
here you go buddy...one just popped up for sale at a well regarded establishment :-) http://bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Fender_Precision_Nate_Mendel.html
Wow... that's good value. Wish I hadn't seen that. I suppose you should actually pay more for a second hand roadworn as someone has been kind enough to advance the mojo process a bit more...
2. I nominate you for the best thread title of the month.
3. Enjoy that bass... it's currently my number one object of lust (basswise). Never knew they had a d-tuner... another plus.
4.
As a buyer and a seller I absolutely insist on it followed by an old school firm shake of the hand to do the deal. A little thing, but it means a lot.
Old school shake of the hand... spot on.
5. Cash on collection... A few years ago I sold some hi-fi gear with an advert in a magazine. The guy was supposed to pay me £800. First Loaded the guy into his car while he stood and watched me. Then he threw a bundle of notes at me. I counted them... £200. He muttered something about getting cash from the hole in the wall and threw another bundle at me. Another £200. By this time I'm beginning to make some mental calculations... my gear's in his car... he's a little guy... I'm a big guy... probably best to get him into the garage before I pin him to the wall... Eventually he gets down to emptying change out of his pockets. He says "can you let me off £5 for the petrol?" Me: "No, give me the money and f*** off". I got the full amount eventually but it was stressful. I rather resented selling my stuff to the little git but I didn't want to go through all that again. I'll also point out that everyone else I've dealt with for cash-on-collection has been an absolute gentleman/woman. It's stating the obvious (now) but always count the money before you hand your stuff over.
6. I think I'll just stick to waxing me Thumb. I did once think about laquering it up.... naaahhh!
7. I'm a bit of a sucker for teles. Very tasteful ageing and amazing attention to detail. Brilliant job.
8. Harmonica. I tried chromatic first, thinking I'd get to Stevie Wonder standard within a month or two. Sold that one on ebay. A few years later I bought a couple of diatonic harmonicas, thinking they have to be easier. Sold them on ebay few months later.
9. I'd be a little disappointed that I'd sold my beloved bass to a complete knob. Apart from that... don't sweat it.
10. I'm tempted to get the mij one right now... my japanese Mustang (in fiesta red) was truly the one that got away... I should never have sold it. Never tried the mim, but I don't like the j pup or the bbos bridge.
11. Most of my gigging was done on a fretless. I hated both the feel and the sound of flats. I tried half round but didn't like them either. However, if you have the itch to try them, you'll have to try them out... may be perfect for you.
12. I find it helps to stand in another room with a very long lead.
13. I was a huge fan in the early 90's. I even went to Athens, Georgia, ate in the Grit, ate in Weaver D's. Well... I was virtually passing through anyway. Saw them play at Huddersfield Stadium (of all places) and they were rather impressive.
14. I would recommend Wenol as gentle metal polish. You may have to get it from Amazon, though.
15. Try an earplug in one ear, or maybe two earplugs if you use them anyway... finger in ear folk style. Had trouble hearing myself when I played sax and the earplug worked... sort of. Worth a try. Your guitarist doesn't want to add a monitor as he doesn't want too much volume on stage? Maybe he should turn down and you get your monitor.
16.
There's no perfect band, very few of us ever find that.
99% agree. I think that sometimes you can find a band that's perfect for a period of time.... maybe 6 weeks or maybe 2 years. If you find it, make the most of it while you can. I also agree that you need to go out for a walk and have a hard conversation with yourself about what you really want.
17. Is it a deposit account? I tried to use a deposit account so I could withdraw money from ebay sales. It worked for a bit then they got a bit shirty and said I had to have a "proper" current account. I didn't want them anywhere near my personal current account so decided they can **** off. I can still make payments, backed up by my credit card, but as I don't sell much on ebay now I'm not bothered about the withdrawals.
18. Currently a Fender Mustang... probably the sonic blue one. Really regret selling my MIJ fiesta red Mustang a few years ago. I think it would make a perfect bass to practise at home.
19. I sometimes have a look for Warwicks on ebay. Sometimes get a bass titled "not a Warwick" followed by an ad for some sort of Cheapo copy. Obviously the search engine just picks up the word. There's enough crap to wade through in ebay as it is.
20. In the spirit of the OP I'm trying to think of other adaptations other than 5 string headstocks. Maybe fretless versions if a rosewood board is retained and may be too soft (don't know about that one as mine have all been ebony or phenolic). How about an active version of a well established passive? Or PJ basses... already well covered, but some suggest they're neither P or J... never tried one of those either. Arguably, some of the Fender signatures have diddled with Leo's original design. Does that count? Personally I wouldn't mind a Badass bridge pre-fitted, rather than the BBOS.
21. Bought my Fender Jazz MIA about 2008... predates this one any way. Don't know if it's supposed to be a std, but mine has dot markers, not blocks, a more obvious three tone sunburst... that looks like two tone... And a high mass bridge which looks very different from that one. And lightweight tuners which are not the same. (And a huge oblong flight case, but not all flight cases are original)
22. Great thread. I'm hooked on this now... can't wait to see the result.
23. Thermal underwear (with a big overlap so your lower back is covered), fingerless gloves, big wooly hat you can pull over your ears. But above all... finish as soon as you can and find a pub with a roaring fire.
24. Fantastic bass. My Zoot was the bass I should never have sold. Love the neck, love the spot and block-free fretboard (never liked fret-markers). Enjoy, and thanks for sharing your thoughts.
