Amazing trio! I’d pick up the walnut wal 4 first, then the modulus, then the other wal4. As contemporary basses go, I think all three are as solid investments as you can get at the moment. I’m very jealous!

I used to play in an instrumental band, really good fun! Gives everyone a bit more room to contribute to the songs I think. Although there’s definitely more of a risk of self-indulgence!

On this basis I’ll never buy a pjb product. Worryingly I have bought some mid range Edifier speakers (also designed by Phil Jones) and I’m concerned about support for them. Given the choice I’d rather have bought something else now.

The high end freshman brand acoustic guitars use a lot of the schertler systems and they’re very, very good amped up. Interesting option to consider!

Wasn’t there something in their royalties contract that they have to appear every so often in character to keep earning royalties from the original film? Im all for this as long as they don’t rush the script!

In an ideal world, I’d have the Ibanez headstock, electronics and neck profile, with the aria body shape, finish and materials! The headstock on the aria really puts me off for some reason.

Blimey, initial thoughts: 1. People borrowing gear without asking 2. People moving your gear in a way you never would and damaging/marking it 3. Turning up to a venue and arrangements are totally different from those agreed 4. People who agree to turn up at a given time when they know they never could arrive at the time. 5. People haven’t practiced songs they asked you to prep for at rehearsal 6. Silk windings that fray. I don’t know why it just bugs me.

I’ve found this really hard as well. The idea of taking an afternoon off to get to a sound check at 4pm and back at 2am just isn’t an option at this point in my life. I’ve got limited holiday and a decent job that rewards well but has high expectations on my availability. With 2 young kids and a musician wife it’s put a lot of barriers in the way of joining any projects.

I wouldn’t go as far as saying it’s a dog based on the pics. Provided the neck is ok and there are no cracks I’d say it’s useable. Cleanup, new strings and setup and it’ll come back to life. It’s amazing the difference a REALLY good clean can make. Polish/scrub/oil everything and I bet it comes up really well.

Back in my guitar shop managing days I’d get so frustrated with people who refused to accept we didn’t have boxed up instruments out the back for every guitar on the shop floor. “You mean I have to buy this one?”. Yes sir, this is the instrument that you liked so much you wanted to buy it. If we had another one, how do you know if it’s as good or if you’d like it as much as this one. It’s not the brand, the price, it’s the guitar in your hands to judge!

That’s a real shame. These shows are a monumental effort, commitment and cost for those that fork out for the stands. I’ve got fond memories of going to packed shows in my youth, gear, rock stars everywhere and it seems to be a thing of the past.

What should I use? I’m listening to music more than recording in here.

Fantastic advice. Thanks to both. Especially appreciate the effort with the floorplan. I’ll work out work how many panels I need. The fish seem happy! They’re breeding which indicates a healthy tank. Maybe they’re fans of 00s alt rock and it gets them in the mood!

Pics below. I don’t have the width to use speaker stands and I work with the desk at 120cm height approx 50% of the time! They’re slightly raised on little plinths and have auralex foam supports. Back wall is the one with three framed pictures on it.

Thanks all for advice. I can’t really relocate the speakers unfortunately as my desk wouldn’t be lined up with a window and I don’t want to spend the day staring at a wall. Appreciate this isn’t a studio/office, it’s an office first, studio 2nd. Apologies if that wasn’t clear. I think the idea of adding in some softfurnishings can’t hurt. I might try that as an easy option and see what difference it makes. The main problem I have is for ultra low bass, the wooden walls aren’t varnished so it’s not a particularly ringy space, just subby low end. I’ve been recommended acoustic panels costing £500 by a friend but the speakers only cost £150! I’ll upgrade them at some point but I don’t want to go overboard.

Oh and speakers are front ported, flat eq, listening using tidal, so reasonable(ish) source. Edifier 1855db.

I’ve got a log cabin in my garden I use as a practice space and a home office. It’s 3x3m square internally, apex roof, carpeted floor and bare wooden walls. Music played through my little edifier monitors sounds pretty good but it suffers from real bass boominess when I move away from the desk and sit listening closer to the opposite wall. It’s real subby uncomfortable headachey low end. Not apparent anywhere except where I want to sit! Speakers are on acoustic isolation foam supports on a sit/stand desk. Back of the room (where it booms) is where I’d prefer to sit as it’s where my bass amp is and the speakers generally sound better from slightly further away. I’m guessing I need something to try and soak up some of the low end but really not sure where to start. A search on studiospares gives me all kinds of products. Acoustic panels? Bass traps? Corner blocks? Help! Advice welcome please! Happy to diy (to a degree).

I had one of these and the pre-amp died. Replaced it with an MEC I think. Sounded pretty good, very lightweight, wasn’t outstanding but perfectly decent.

That comment was posted 9 years ago! There was a batch of Mag amps that were fitted with the wrong fuses, it did harm their rep for a bit, I think they’ve firmly re-established themselves as being a top notch company for products and services these days.

I was about to post the worst amp I ever played through was some sort of torque combo when I was at school, and it appears!! I could remember the colourful knobs (did nothing), big red power button and a rope that replaced the handle that had snapped off. I could never make it sound anything other than a fuzzy fart. Absolutely awful. In fairness it probably needed replacing about 5 years before I got my mits on it.

It really hit home for me how it’s not remotely about the name on the headstock, it’s the instrument in your hands. I don’t think I’m ever going to mail order a bass again! It’s so subjective and driven by personal requirements, it’s not worth the risk to me.
