When some BCers say they're not much cop at bass.....
jonno1981 replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
I’d say I’m pretty average, but reckon I’ve played in some above average bands over the years. Point I’m trying to make is that it’s not about the individuals, but how they come together that’s the important bit for the music. No one cares how good you are if the band just doesn’t gel. -
Best reason to go DI only! Wouldn’t fancy carrying a bass rig around.

Thanks for the recommendations. Unfortunately purchasing plans are on hold for a bit as my aquarium needs a new filter and lights. It’s going to consume my disposable income in the short term. I’ll come back to this thread and update it once I’ve actually bought something. 😀

Love the headstock. Might be the first time I’ve seen a matching scratch-plate headstock and it’s brilliant.

They’re pretty savvy on internet advertising. If you do a generic google search “I want to buy a bass”, they always turn up high or first. Product is very cheap, checkout is fairly easy, lots of models/colours to choose from. Schools buy a lot of them as well. I’ve never played a good one! But they are often in a sorry state when they turn up secondhand.

I'm ordering a Sei bass... I need your expertise!

That 4 string is so beautiful. The neck through looks so incredible on its (ahem) backside. If I had that I think I’d display it backwards on a stand! -
Bit of a greatest hits episode tonight. How good was Jill Scott & band?

I’m a fan of the brand. The bass vt is a staple on my board but doesn’t do this sort of sound well.

Crikey it’s over £300! Ticks a lot of boxes though.

Interesting. I don’t associate him with that sort of tone, but that’s not to say the pedal can’t manage it.

Hi hive mind! I want to get a drive pedal that has two switchable levels and flavours of drive. I used to use a trex bass juice that had an on/off and a boost. Something similar but different! Ideally, a preamp that has an on/off, then drive 1 and then drive 2 gain levels would be splendid, but not essential. Any recommendations? Seen a Goliath effects desolation which looks the ticket.

If only they could make these at the same price as the 40th anniversary squiers!

I really enjoyed reading that. Thanks for posting and reminiscing.

When did you realise….. you weren’t going to “make it”?
jonno1981 replied to Rayman's topic in General Discussion
Twice! A&R told us “there’s only one incubus”, reviewing then bands finest work in my early twenties. Reject & exit stage right. 🤣 Reaching the age of 40 without headlining the Sunday night at Reading festival. Oh well. -
40th Anniversary Precision £259 at Thomann!
jonno1981 replied to Frank n funker's topic in Bass Guitars
I’ve been trying to work out what I like the most about this. Blocks and binding? Scratchplate? Gold hardware? I don’t think I really love any particular design choice but all together it just looks killer. Im so jealous I don’t have £260 knocking around to grab one! -
Looks like it’s been in a river! Going to be very satisfying to remove the dna that’s on it and bring it back to life. Got some rubber gloves?

The working guys I know are some of the friendliest, easiest to work with people with inexhaustible amounts of drive and stamina. I’d say this is waay more important than gear, although there is a minimum level needed for sure. Networking is also the ticket to success and it’s a real skill that leads to the phone ringing.

Hi Gary! I’ll look into it and see if I’m free.

Decided I needed something new to inspire me to practice more. Ever get stuck in a rut and need something shiny to encourage you to get back to the bass shed? Well that was me and scratch definitely itched! My orange b25 was ace at outputting meagre fart impressions at low volume so decided to up it a bit. I’ve been keeping an eye out for a new amp on BC and FB for a while and this rumble combo turned up for sale a couple of miles down the road. I’m not gigging at the mo but wanted to get something that would work if the opportunity arose. I’ve had big rigs in the past and miss the weight (tone-wise) a decent size cab can deliver, even at low volumes. Fantastic enjoyable, easy purchase and nice chat from the seller led to me purchasing this 1x15 200 watt combo. Pretty much mint condition and barely used. It sounds great, is super light and works brilliantly at low volume. Initial preference is to run the gain really high, vintage switch in and eq mostly flat. No real tinkering to get a good sound. I get a lot more noticeable variation in tone now when changing pickups/ right hand position. It’s made practice fun again. I’m flicking through tuition books that I’ve ignored for years. For the first time ever my neighbour told me he could hear what I was playing and gave me a compliment. I think it was a polite way of telling me to turn down! Reminder to self to be reasonable with the volume. So far so good! If I actually get the chance to play out the house I’ll update this thread with thoughts.

40th Anniversary Precision £259 at Thomann!
jonno1981 replied to Frank n funker's topic in Bass Guitars
£259 is below trade price for a £399 retail instrument so thomann are either making a loss to clear the shelves or fender sold a container load on a special price to them. Point two would be unfair to the rest of their dealer network so it’s guessing it’s point 1. When they’re gone they’re gone! -
40th Anniversary Precision £259 at Thomann!
jonno1981 replied to Frank n funker's topic in Bass Guitars
Any of the uk stores price matching? This is either thomann getting over stocked and having to clear their warehouse or a general price reposition by fender that the other stores are likely to follow. -
40th Anniversary Precision £259 at Thomann!

Wow. Only £30 more than an affinity? Could this be the best value bass of all time? -
I quite like the single. Very compressed overall but I guess what isn’t. Bass sound nice and valvey, slightly fuzzy around the edges. It’s much better than I expected from a bunch of oaps.
