A big +1 to all of that. I've only ordered a couple of instruments on spec and luckily they've always been good ones, apart from the MIM Jazz V that rusted from condensation. I always try before I buy and pick very carefully. My Am.Std. Jazz was literally the tenth one I'd tried. It took that many to find the right one not only for me, but that met my exacting quality standards. Thankfully, I've no such gripes with Status. Every single bass passes through Rob Green's hands before it exits the building. If only all companies could be as good.
I wish id gone for your SR5 now! Hmm...think I might just need to start from scratch again.

Well, the store have been quick enough to sort a pickup/return on Monday. Im actually really disappointed, as I really wanted one of these instruments. I tried some out in London as well, and found the same few niggles on each one. If they were £300-400 less, fair enough.
Your question is its own answer. Cab companies build and promote what they think will sell, and the vast majority of players buy their cabs based not upon the engineering within but rather on how they look and who uses them. Mixing drivers to cover the same bandwidth is not good engineering, but it is successful marketing. If you must succumb to the lures of that marketing a 1x15 and 2x10 are a reasonably good match. A 1x15 and 4x10 isn't. I'm not aware of any. If any of the usual sources possessed the technical know-how to do that you can rest assured that they wouldn't keep it a secret. AccuGroove tries to make it seem that way in their ad copy, but their level of technical incompetence was tellingly revealed in the AccuSwitch debacle. The only significant engineering that I'm aware of where mixed cabs is concerned lies in making the footprints the same for stacking. More than a few 1x15 and 4x10 cabs share not only the same footprint but the exact same cabinet save the number of holes in the baffle. That should set off alarm bells, but curiously it doesn't. The stacking of the two looks very pretty, so it sells.
I remember even Tom Bowlus stating how good the Orange stack was hence I went for the whole thing once I tested it. Its one of the only 1x15s I really like, and the porting, IMO, is designed very well. It DOES sound good...honestly. I tried a few other ideas, and ive tried high end cabs that are right at the top price bracket. The Orange still sounds good in its own way. I asked TC about their cab matching, and they said all their artists bar a few chose the 210/212 because it just works. They designed them to work how they do. They might not be looking at it from a scientific point of view all the time, but then again, I dont like a sterile perfect uncoloured rig if im honest....Im not keen on the whole 'mini PA' idea. I want a bass rig which can handle finger funk, dirty hardcore punk with lots of grind, and normal rock n roll.

Im guessing you liked it the best?

Its more than the setup unfortunately. Its things that cannot be rectified without going back to the manufacturer.
I just went super cheap and paid £8 for a folding luggage rack from Walthamstow market - bosh! RS210 fits nicely on it and I wont cry if someone steals it or if it breaks.
Ah...thats good for the nice small rigs...cheers. But my Orange 4x10 is a monster....sounds awesome...but a monster to move! I think I might just have to get a really good old style trolley...the big strong ones. That might not fold up...but it wont break neither!

Hey Ive recently tried to purchase TWO of the same bass, and the first one was in a right mess. I got a refund on that one, but then spotted another, a little more money but they were throwing a quality case in etc. So, I receive it today, sure plays better, no fret buzz, nice neck BUT, yet again, QC issues that I dont think a bass should have when its more than 1K retail price. I wont go into detail as both stores have been more thean helpful, and hopefully when I try to return this I will have no problems. It has put me off searching though...for the right 5 string. All my Stingrays were perfect from the factory, and still are. My 3 Fenders are blindlingly good, and they have really improved on their QC for a sub £900 instrument. Any advice?!
What about them? There are factors other than driver diameter at play. They don't sound good because there are 10s and 12s,, they sound good because they are designed taking all the factors into account (or at least getting them right inadvertently).
What about the 'dont ever mix drivers' debate that the cabinet designers always state?! Thats what I dont understand. If its done correctly, like TC, why not? Cheers
Cheers You might to check out the various 'acronym' bands of the time too: SNFU, RKL, early DRI (before they became a Crossover band). Another good band was Spermbirds. Also, you could go back a little earlier to when the US hardcore punk scene really kicked off - you can see the excellent 'American Hardcore' documentary here... - that also kicks off with the always excellent 'Pay To Cum' by Bad Brains
Man, SNFU, I remember those guys. Crazy but actually really good.
Weigh it and price it up on the Royal Mail website - you'd be surprised at the cost. Not as much as you think (unless you want to send it RMSD, then that's a different story).
Cheers Last time I sent a pedal....the Line DL4 (bigger by a fair bit) it was almost £10!

What about the TC Electronic RS210/212? I heard it and it sure sounded good! TC even have a video on how to set it up so the 10s are further back so more of a balanced mix. Any ideas? Or is it just science? As in, my Orange rig sounds good, so who cares?!
-
Am I right in guessing in chromatic mode it will work just like a TU2? As in, you want one string, say the E, in D, you just tune to D?
-
Its just as good as normal tuners in chromatic mode as well. The vids explain it quite well. So the Poly thing is an addition.
It might also be worthwhile familiarising yourself with older (mid to late '80s) US hardcore punk bands, such a Dag Nasty, Rites of Spring, and a fair few others from the Dischord label. And perhaps bands from the same era such as Attitude, The Stupids, and Final Conflict. NoFX and others seem to be descended from that sort of stuff, albeit with a slightly more poppy tempo.
Exceptional taste sir!

SOLD PENDING Hey Selling my Boss TU2 Tuner Pedal. Immaculate condition, with box and instructions. Not one mark on this pedal.... Because of condition, I would like £42.50 plus P&P which I think will be roughly £4.50 £47 all in ONO. Payment via bank transfer please. Pics: (Note the pedal is still in the bag....not one scratch on it). Cheers Gareth

Gotta be a Classic Stingray 4/5 for me, in the light blue. The white pickups looks awesome! Maple board is also a must. Think this might be my 2010 bass!
Ok so I'm jealous that you saw them play the decline. I saw them in about 99/2000ish play at Manchest Apollo with a load of other bands off Fat Wreck (guttermouth, bosstones etc). They were amazing. I'm not doing so great with the decline, got up to about 2mins into the song, but my memory is crap. I have to play along to the tab. Also trying to learn a few rancid songs. I'm loving the bass to 'fall back down', but most of my efforts are on the solo part of 'maxwell murder', I've learned the first half of the solo, but I cant quite get the speed right - I play it at about 1/2 speed
I was there! I found with fast fast picking, get a really comfy pick, and find a technique that feels easy. I learnt early about 14 years ago off an older friend how to play at that speed and it just keeps getting easier
-
I've nailed a lot of Nofx's basslines, and braved a few Rancid ones, but I haven't tried The Decline. Mike is very very underrated, probably because no one thinks punk = talent. Not only that, he's the frontman/main vocals.

Thanks! I went to B&Q, noticed all the folding ones had small wheels! The standard old school trolley is £13 ish, but I'm still looking. I've seen the ones with 4 wheels on amazon. They might work as long as my 4X10 won't destroy it!

I have 5 4 string basses and I have my first proper 5 string in mind. IMO, you cannot go wrong with the Lakland 5 string neck. I have smallish hands but I picked up a DJ5 and I could play really quick! Nice n comfy. MM SR5s are nice, i'd like a new Classic series 5! I found the various Warwick necks I tested too fat for me, and I like Precision necks!

Not a comment just for this bass, but the entire new Warwick range is .... not to my tastes at all. Ive just seen some pics on their new 2010 basses. The Bootsy/Clayton ones are the worst by far hahaha.

There is a large thread on tbass about this....seen some comments from some basschat guys Looks impressive....BUT....it also looks a little 'overboard' for me. I wouldnt use all those options on it. Id prefer a normal VT Bass with a proper DI built in, same size as the BDDI. Any idea on price?! If its REALLY good, I might consider one mid 2010.
