Anyone tried a Fender American Vintage 62RI Jazz?
Musicman20 replied to Clarky's topic in Bass Guitars
B*gger Think I will keep looking for an early 70s Jazz and hope that someone on eBay puts the wrong price as a B-I-N! Either that or Sibob will crack under the relentless pressure of my irritating PMs and say, "OK, Clarky I'll sell you mine, now will you please leave me alone?"
What is the Nash Jazz like? I think with the reissues, the 62 P and 75 Jazz seem to be favourites. -
Is everything OK over there? Anyone know? Regards, A curious Jon.
Jon, that Lakland in your avatar is stunning.

My two favourite amps I currently own....the Orange and TC. The MB LM3 is also fantastic. I tried a lot of all tube and micro amps, and these three instantly jumped out at me. Cabs wise...well, ive gone around in circles with them. The Orange with its respective cabs is absolutely awesome. I really like Aguilar cabs, so I bought some. I also really like the TC cabs, and they are great prices, so I want some now! Berg also make fantastic cabinets... There are other great manufacturers: EBS, Epifani, Mesa...the list is endless. If you like a big Ampeg sound but want modern features, give the TC a test.
I've tried everything too and have been frustrated by the lack of punch of my Puma1000. I was about to give up but a visit to BassDirect and trying everything Mark has !(Sorry!) led me to this.......... I tried the Berg with the TC heads (all of them) but it sounded best through my Puma, much to my relief really. My reservation about getting an NV cab has always been the weight/size but the castors help a lot and the tone is unmatched by any cab or combination of cabs I have tried/owned. This combination really provides a huge punchy sound - fantastic - can't wait to gig it!
Wow! New colour on the Berg logo? Seriously would love an NV cab but I dont have the room or a car it will fit in It would work perfect with my RH450 or Orange.
I can attest that when I sold this to Gareth it was an absolute minter and a lovely bass - assuming he hasn't smashed it over the head of the London rental agent today (see his other posts) I would guess that it remains in superb nick as he is a stickler for keeping his gear pristine. Superb bass, somebody buy it and you will be very happy Trust me I'm a doctor (well, a biochemist but .... hey )

I played it at the Clarky/Gareth handover too, and further attest to Clarky's attestation. It's a cracker, and I actually can't believe it's going for less than £750 tbh. It was totally mint then, and since I had Gareth's '96 Oly white MIJ off him at the same time, I can augment my previous attestation that Gareth keeps his instruments in pristine condition.
Thanks you two! I might appear odd being so careful with my gear, especially to my old band who just didnt 'get it', but I figure you may as well look after it
I dunno... I'm beginning to wonder if 'light = lite' when it comes to tone.
I must admit some of the really lightweight amps do lack the tone...but thats just me. I like a big powerful vintage rock tone, but I also like the smooth fast and warm Markbass tone....as it has massive lows with such tiny amp. The RH450 is the closest Ive ever heard a micro sound like a tube amp. So much I made myself skint to buy one. But, its not hugely light....its about 10lbs, but it feels substantial. Some of these micros probably weigh less than a large effects pedal. Like the obsession with stupidy small phones, it seems the market balanced out with a larger size but better features (iphone, etc etc). I think some of the 'inaccuracies' and 'colour' that certain cabinets add actually really make a lovely tone. Its finding one you like. I always liked the 90s Trace cabs...they arent perfect...but I like the sound. Not tested the latest ones....but I imagine I will still like them. I think the obsession with lightweight and complete accuracy/no colour of tone, actually led me to realise thats not for everyone. I tried it...and didnt really see the massive deal with it. Maybe it because of the tones I like, and the music I listen to. For instance, Ive always wanted a Warwick, but I tried one 'on', as well as a Spector, and they just do not suit me. Im an idiot because I cant see past the vintage style of basses. Each to their own though. Thats the fun!
I've got the LPB! I think the neck may be unbound on this, and it's finished in Nitro, not poly...again, i think... I'm going to put both the covers on this one, may also get a shell pickguard on it too, just to change it up a bit.
IMO thats going to look bloody sexy. I love LPB....beats CAR anyday Covers will look awesome. Pics up when it gets to you -
I still think ceramic works best for rock....that's after testing some high end neo gear. Aguilar DB 12s all the way.

Chris is a pleasure to deal with. Smooth and easy transaction. A pleasant gent to meet! Enjoy the cab! Gareth
Seconded Gareth - I couldn't quite get to grips with that extra string but the P5 is a beautiful thing and an identikit of the P4 (also my old one, oops) in your avatar
Ah...alas, I think Im after a Jazz type bass for my 5 string. But...Im going to think about it. Plus the Lakkie was a new one and thus on the ccard (new fangled 12 months interest free) at the moment my gear cash is tied....that is unless I sell my Precision which is identical to that one but a 4!

Ive been testing and buying/selling a hell of a lot recently. I am convinced I have my perfect amps. I am also now very sure that pure hifi completely modern amps are not for me....eg the Genz sound. I like warmth, vintage tone, some nice sweet high end, and overall I like it whether thats clean or dirty, depending on what band Im playing in! I am also not that bothered about lightweight neo cabinets or sonically pure cabinets. I have tried a few neo cabinets....even the really high end gear, and its great. The weight is great, and yes they are very much the same as ceramic. BUT....its still not 100% there for me. I cannot get the MASSIVE ceramic thump. Size of cabinet is much more important. I cannot really say at any point I need 5 mid sized cabinets, and this has led me to sell my beloved Berg HS410. What a fantastic piece of kit...but it was the cab I knew would sell well. One day I might go Berg again...when I have more space. Its a very small compact 4x10...but seen as though I have 4 other mid sized cabs....it wasnt getting the use it should (Enjoy it Jigster!) So...as much as I am really not sure how it has happened, I am going for ceramic 2x10s. These are the RS210s by TC Electronics. Yes, they are not probably as well made overall as Berg...but for their size, they pack a HUGE punch. I was actually shocked how good they sounded. And yep, they are ceramic. I dont know why they work for me, but they do. So im going to put some on order (x2), not bother with an RS212 as its again another 2x12 which I already have, and test out these vertical 2x10s. One of them is going to be great for smaller practices and home use. 2 is brilliant! I am awaiting the new finish, (black in colour, and stronger) and I will report back. Could be a few months as the new finish isnt on the 2x10s as yet. My advice...test test test and find what you like. I never though i'd get a full TC rig....but I like the sound it produces, and the sheer slimness is great when I dont want to cart the Orange about, or the Aguilar cabs. Happy New Year....let the 2010 GAS start!
I had a Duck Dunn and it was a lovely bass. Very very well made and a wonderful tone. However, it really does depend on what Fender you compare it with and how they both play to you. What I mean is, I had a Lakland Darryl Jones jazz bass. A wonderful instrument, amazing quality that only Fender could ever dream of producing. The hardware was solid, the neck was smooth and the finish was second to none. A top class instrument of the highest degree. However, I did not like it to play. It felt very stiff and rigid and made my fretting hand ache. I replaced it with a MIA Fender Jazz 75 re-issue. In comparison to the Lakland, its rough around the edges, not very well put together, clumsy looking with cheap hardware and looks as pretty as a brick sh*tt*r. However, its a dream to play and I feel totally at one when I play it. Its the easiest bass in the world to play and the most natural bass I have ever played. I really do not have to think when I play it, I am moulded to it. I would not swap it for anything. So, yes Laklands are very good instruments but just be careful on what Fender its going to replace as it may feel very different. If I was going to buy a Precision, then I would probably get a Fender. Not for looks or build quality but purely on how they feel to play. This is off course if its going to be a main playing bass. If for something different then a Lakland would be a top bass to buy.
Thanks Linus. Ive had a think...and I am pretty sure as pretty as a Lakland is...for a P bass I need to stick to Fender...and If I want to improve the 08/09 I have....I need to go vintage or the 62 Reissue. Both my Ps are sooo lightweight in actual weight but MASSIVE in tone. I really like my old MIJ thats been sold around here recently, but the new USA's just sound massive...and the fretboards are really nice. Add the decent new bridge, nice colours, etc, I may as well stick to what Ive got. One thing I noticed with the DJ...and this is from the 5 string perspective so slightly different, but the neck was fabulous....nicest 5 string neck Ive ever played. I would definitely like a 75 Reissue Jazz at some point. Stunning growl! Lets face it, Fender may not have all the bells n whistles and wont have so much QC, but the tone and feel on their instruments is great. GAS over...hahah. Ill probably keep the P and just get a 5 string Lakland and be done. For now!
If it was Oly white with the matching headstock I'd be in there....
+1 At this price...what extra do you get? May as well get a 75 reissue with blocks. Nice bass though still...thanks for the link. -
I think it would be pretty awesome to possibly have a live band or two....one thats very 'muso' and another that is more rock n roll. Less slap as well please....I quite enjoy listening to slap....but fingerstyle/pick is much less abrasive over a few hours
Very easy transaction - met at a convenient half way point and the cab is impeccable - really cared for gear- by with confidence on any future sales. Cheers Gareth
Thanks, enjoy the cabinet!

There is a car park near my place that's really cheap on weekends....and secure. Tube is right nearby...but there are obviously lots of other options. It's SE but nice n quiet. I might be able to help out with storing etc if there are issues with security if people stay overnight....I wouldn't sit and play it, honest!
