Can some one explain the whole Musicman, Stingray, Sterling thing
Musicman20 replied to dave_bass5's topic in Bass Guitars
Ive got my eye on a SR4, 3 band EQ, Black with maple neck. So far the only things im sure of are it has to be a 4 string and have 3 Band EQ. Not overly fussed about the colour but im not really in to bursts or bright colours. White is also good but ive not seen any come up second hand recently.
The black on Rays looks great in the flesh. All Rays have a really thick polish finish which, IMO, is one of the nicest out there. Aren't we sad not taking a day off bass for Xmas haha! -

It's weird how natural looks so good with Stingrays. I personally used to be addicted to Natural finish but now I've only got the Ray and my USA Telecaster in Natural. It's a good look! Now I'm addicted to White because now I don't associate it with 80s metal. Sunburst is also great on a Ray. -
Have to say that I have used many Ampeg units but they were hired in so may have had a few miles on them. I think the Amps are better but the cabs I'd give a miss. If people say the newer models are better then ok, their info might be more upto date, but traditionally you needed 2 cabs or a 8x10 as the power was very poor pre speaker...300watts for an 8x10 is not good by any stretch, so a modern 4x10 should be delivering 600watts RMS easily with decent chassis' today, by my thinking. If you want a decent cab.. and some might say the BEST 4x10 around, then the above poster has a BERG 4 x10 which might be worth a think about. Just my 2p...
Cheers JTUK.....I didnt think about that!

Hmmm....lots of choice with that cash! I found the SVT Pro 3 to be great when I borrowed one on tour....but it sometimes...sometimes lacks power. If you are buying new, personally I would avoid Ampeg. But thats me. I was set on Ampeg until I tested the new versions CL and VR, and they just didnt do it for me. The 810E at lower volumes was just dull. But, Ampeg do make, well did make, some great bass gear. Thats just me though. Personally, I lost a bit of money thinking Ampeg was king (luckily not much) then as soon as I switched I found something that was more 'me'. If you are set on Ampeg, get the SVT Pro 3, then a different brand of cabinet. I suggest Aguilar if you don't mind normal weight cabinets. I know Im probably out on a limb, and when you see it you wont believe me, but the TC Elec RH450 amp is about £742 at the moment, and thats much louder that the SVT Pro 3, much smaller, can do an Ampeg tone if you want it to, and plenty of other tones. They apparently aimed that amp at the micro amp market for rock bands...whereas MB and Genz, etc, are aimed at other styles, (although they can all be used for whatever you want!). An RH450 with its RS cabinets, (RS210 + RS212) is VERY good...I dont own the cabinets...so Im not just saying my own gear is good. But I would like them. This smaller stack is incredibly loud..and wont cost you that much more. I didnt believe the reviews myself until I tested them. Very impressed...go and test Good luck!

I say go for the real thing. As much as they are close, a real MM will serve you well. I would personally go 3 eq, UNLESS you want one of the new Classic Series Rays. Stunning colours coming out, 2 EQ, flat slab body, mutes, classic logos etc. They look AMAZING! I also like the White Ray you've picked out. -
Hi guys Sorry I have amended the above to include a price. The price is basically as it is due to purchasing new corners (still brand new and not yet fitted) for the cabinet and a virtually brand new cover from a chap on Talkbass who had a newish one spare. I am aware obviously people will want to haggle as well. The corners on the cabinet at the moment are actually fine, apart from a few minor scuffs on the bottom ones, but I’m a perfectionist so I bought 8 spare. £650 ONO. I have had a few people very interested in it already. If it does not go for the price I would like, I would still be very happy to keep it as it is a fantastic piece of bass equipment. Many thanks Gareth

Orange Bass Terror - It's here, FULL review and PIX
Musicman20 replied to Moos3h's topic in Amps & Cabs
Hi there, I got a Bass Terror last weekend, tried in the shop with a TC 2x10 cab and the guys in shop said that building was vibrating. Got home, hooked it up to my Aguilar DB410 cab just to give it a quick try, and within 5 minutes next door complained saying that I was making too much noise (more than the usual...). Band practice last night, comments from the guys in the band "is going too be loud enough, it is only a very small amp - turn it up to see how loud it goes?", I think that they regreted the last comment when I turned the volume up to 12 o'clock - THIS AMP IS VERY LOUD Moos3h review is pretty accurate, I love it so far and works very well with my DB410 cab At first I assumed that the Bass Terror had a std active EQ with cut and boost as the legend on the front panel shows a zero at 12 o'clock, but the EQ is definitely passive as when the bass, mid and treble are all at minimum position no sound comes out. Even with passive EQ you can get quite a lot of variation from the EQ, with most settings being very usable. Yes, the fan is noisy but not really noticeable in a band situation. I had a look at the fan and this looks like a std 80mm PC Case cooling fan, so I am considering replacing it with a silent (quiet) PC Case fan as this looks very easy to do assuming that runs at 12V supply (a high end "silent" PC fan will cost between £8 and £15). I think that my Ampeg SVT-2 Pro is going to be up for sale very soon Cheers Joao
That setup just oozes cool. Orange amps and Aguilar cabs work really well, hence why I went for some as well as the Orange ones. -

It sounds absolutely crazy that people feel they have to leave after a disagreement over the internet. We all have things we agree and disagree on. This topic has flared up so much interest, and I think some of it may be due to the fact that certain members are wary of any newcomers being flooded with 'get a Compact' comments to every single 'what cab?' thread. Compacts will work for some people, but not for all. We shouldnt shower certain pieces of equipment with mass praise...

Oh no, I agree. You have to test, and test I most definitely did.
I'm another one that used Neo's for a number of years (Epifani UL210's) and have now 'rediscovered' ceramics in the guise of a couple of Bergantino's 112's. Its a bit of an apples and pears comparison, two 2x10's against two 1x12's, but I also tried the Bergantino AE112's against the HT/EX pair I bought - the AE's sounded harsh and less musical in comparison to their Ceramic driver/heavier cab brethren.
I have to agree. +1. The AEs are nice, but didnt have the sheer grunt of the HT/EX ERs I tested. I wanted to go neo....but its not for me. I do like the Tecamp M212 I have, but im thinking of moving it on soon now the other one has sold in the for sale bit.

I personally dont rate Ampeg massively anyway....maybe the older stuff. But, it definitely had miles more clarity and punch than the Compact, and it was 8 ohms with my friends SVT Pro 3.
-
There has been hype....definitely. And that can lead to disappointment. Fortunately Im not struggling with any back problems....and I do make sure I get help when lifting cabinets. Weight to me is more of an issue with the amp and bass. I usually borrow backline cabs, so 80% of the time Im not hauling stuff around. I'm definitely on the school of thought that the ceramics still add something that neos cannot. Maybe thats ridiculous, but even store owners who test gear all day state the same thing. I also think Talkbass is a massive hype machine. It annoys me. Most of those guys are happy with 4 ohm 2x12s for everything, but for me, thats sometimes not enough. I got into the frame of mind of 'one cab solutions', but so far only the HS410 is that one cab solution....or something bigger like the NV610. We also must agree that some people here have totally different volume needs. Whats loud for one is quiet for another, (especially me, we play too loud, and to me I want to turn down, but I use ear protection so I dont have to worry). I tested the Compact with my full band at a gig, (yes a gig not my house) and the lows were there, but it got lost completely once the band starting playing. Rock bands need totally different setups to funk or jazz. We had to switch back to the Ampeg 4x10 for the next band. I appreciate the test, and it was light....but then again my HS410 weighs nothing with casters!
