I still havent found a 5 string im 100% happy with. The Lakkie neck is great, but the SR5 neck is also nice. I am going to give the search a rest for now. Im quite tempted by the new EB MM Classic Series Stingray 5.

I think with three TC cabs the head is allowed to run at just above 2 ohms, but because TC designed the cabinets, and they know their exact, you are only allowed to use three TC cabs. If its another manufacturer, the standard 4 ohms minimum applies. If you ask me, they are a very good price, and they still have the proper ceramic thump. Ive heard + and - about which combination to use, but despite the 'dont mix drivers' argument, the 210 + 212 sounds fantastic. I have gone for 2 2x10 for now as I want to have a vertical 4x10, (the more punch side of things). I would like an RS212 to mix with them....but thats further down the line. TBH, at £469 for the 2x12, thats REALLY cheap.

Can some one explain the whole Musicman, Stingray, Sterling thing

Im guessing the new Classic Series Rays are the old 2 band EQ design and the same principles apply? -
TBH I think an Orange Bass Terror is much cheaper and fairly similar option, you just dont get the built in USA by Mesa feel to it. Bass Terror + awesome 2x12 = probably a better deal.
These look great, guess the only decision is 2x210 or 210 & 212 The combos seem more pricey than separates, is it the same head just housed in the enlarged cabinet?
I ordered 2 x 210 but I'm in two minds whether to get a 212!

You will find if you want the same volume, eg 2 Berg 112s, as the Shroeder 1212L, you will have to pay a fair bit more. Its upto you on what you can afford I guess. The 1212L, if you get a well made one, is a very loud small cab! The Bergs are much more polite in their sound, and I dont think ive yet seen bad QC on a Berg. As always in life, well mostly, you get what you pay for. Id still like two AE112s...
Even with the bigger Schroeders - which are supposed to sound wider than the small boxes - I never really got any 'real' bottom from my 410L or 21012L. It worked for some situations, but I missed the supporting bottom end. At the time, I was doing a lot of gigs with various decent cabs provided by the promoters, and I realised I was missing something fundamental (if you excuse the pun). As soon as I tried the Bergs, there it was... a 3D quality to each note that I'd been pining for all that time. If you're cutting through dense mix, I think the Schro's would be worth trying. If you've got room to breathe (or even not!) I think the Bergs might be more up your alley. Bergantino - reassuringly expensive. ...so buy used.
+1....if you can buy used, do. Usually the owners will be very careful with them cabs due to the cost of them!
Just to add the the CL vs AD200B, I had the same decision, and as you can see from my sig the Orange won. Oh and if you play heavy metal, Norma Jean, Cancer Bats and Converge to name a couple, use the AD200B
+1..... Even Alkaline Trio have started using them. Also, Every Time I Die had one through an Aguilar DB810.

Sk8 will be along soon to help! Basically, Berg all the way, without a doubt.

Im half tempted to give up and be done with it. Then just shop around in 3 months time when the NAMM basses are hitting the UK. I am also tempted to give up because I cant find a nice vintage style 5 string that ticks all the boxes. Plenty of 4s....5s? Nope....not yet

I suggest trying the Markbass Little Mark 2/3. If you can stretch any further, I also agree the TC RH450 is great.
-
Im thinking of putting an order in. Purely as it would be good for my guitar playing as well. Probably wont use the poly bit for bass, but its there! Plus, if Im using the RH450, no need for a tuner.

Sadowsky 5 would be nice. The ones I tested were a little polite, but the QC was much better than the current basses Ive been trying out. I dont mind spending £1100-1200 on a really nice Sadowsky. Cannot believe they are £2K new for a UV Metro!
Yes indeedy & we all know that the preamp in the 2-band has more punch and "scoopedness" than the three. It'll be a five for me this year, unless something else comes up.
I might just save my 5 string quest for this tbh...

I just wish there were proper demos of these things hanging about! Thats my problem...the tone is the ultimate goal, then aesthetics and neck.
-
Purely because Ive heard they make a good 5 string. I really like the Lakkie 35" scale...not sure what its like over a long period of playing though (eg achey hands etc)
-
Thanks for all the info guys. Im thinking MAYBE a Spector...but I dont know what their string spacing and necks are like.
Have you hefted one in the flesh before? If not, we could attempt to meet up now you're in the region, and you could have a bash on mine. Admittedly it's a fretless with a polyestered ebony board, so it's unlike any other SR5 in existence (AFAIK), but you're welcome to try it out. I love it, but the weight still takes me by surprise a little bit every time I pick it up, especially if I'm coming from a stint on my Fender.
Hey thanks! Im moving in just under two weeks, ll let you know. I tested a SR5, a lovely colour, a few months back. I think the reason I want a Jazz or Ray is the pickup is very comfy to play finger style on. The Ray I tested was lighter than the Lakland I also tested! I do like the necks on both, but the Lakkie was SO easy to play. Its a shame they are so hard to get hold of....

Thanks guys! I havent seen much on the new American Series 5 Jazz as yet...I ned to scour the internet a bit. Rich - Havent tested the DRs yet....still life in my old strings but Ive got a nice pile of new strings ready for when im gigging a lot again. I am thinking Stingray 5, secondhand....seem to be going very cheap recently. I like the Clover basses, but again im worried about second hand value. I really want a proper vintage growly jazz tone.
-
Right, Ive kinda gone full circle with this as well. As you can guess, I like a tradtional bodyshape. I am looking for the perfect 5 string. I am willing to save a little more now as my previous efforts have failed over the past 5 months or so. I would prefer the following: Jazz type bass (two single coils) Failing this, a MM Style Humbucker (and probably to save messing about, an actual Stingray/Sterling!) Olympic White/Aged White/Sunburst/Sonic Blue/possibly Natural. Decent medium weight, nothing heavy. Comfortable neck (very important....for reference, I really like the 35" Lakland necks). If Jazz, MUST have passive option or be totally passive. Nothing too polite...as it will no doubt be used in a rock band...so has to have a good growl! I dont really want an obscure manufacturer, as I dont want to struggle to move it on if I have to. I would like blocks/inlays if possible. Budget? Approx £1200 MAX. I know Lakland sits right into this bracket, but their current availability is annoying me, so anything but Lakland unless there are pristine second hand ones for sale.
