Went to Guitar Guitar today in Newcastle (which i may add had very friendly and helpful staff) to check out what stock they had in...Spotted a Sadowsky UV70, Black, Maple board 5...Plugged into a Phil Jones amp..first thoughts were what a fxxxxx tone! The slap/pop tone was the best ive ever heard to be fair.....couldnt help thinking the B was a little floppy though, i guess considering its scale this may be forgiven..But its a Sadowsky!!?? My old S5 was sooo much better...Anyone else played one...what did you think of the B string on these babies.. Ive got to say i would forgive this and buy one as i love the look the tone and 70's body size....but at over £2000.00 i would think very carefully.. i wish i still had my RV5!!!!
I tried most of the Sadowsky's in there a few months back. I just couldnt get a tone I was happy with....as soon as I picked up the 75 Reissue Fender Jazz, I was happy. IMO, they are a little overpriced, but they look fantastic and the quality is superb.
I'd risk it.
+1
as for the Saturdays gig, that would be amazing. I'd hop for that to be a mimed gig as i'd surely fudge up watching Frankie's bottom wiggle around the stage. Gaga is sexy, but she isn't that good looking... Hmm, music, anyone?
Agreed, she is certainly attractive but not in a stunning pretty way, just hot. Anyways, back on topic, I'd love to play any massive gig like this, no matter who it is!
Dave, in my experience a Wizard Stealth is quite similar to a SD Quarter Pounder, ie, tons of beef. It won't get you the growl on higher notes particularly, just more oomph. Sounds to me like a less drastic (and cheaper) option would be to buy a good preamp pedal such as Tone Hammer or Sansamp or Sadowsky
+1, as we discussed through PM Dave, a good grit pedal/DI will add a massive amount of beef and growl. I reckon get down to the Gallery and test the Tech 21 Sansamp vs Aguilar Tone Hammer. Two very different beasts.
There aren't many mainstream manufacturers that aren't overpriced if you ask me, but Warwick really do take the p**s. Don't get me wrong, I've owned one or two nice Warwicks, including an absolutely lush black SSI, but would I pay like £2500 for one? Not in a month of sundays.......
+1....Ive played some nice Warwicks, but the price is daft. Im going to get a right caining for this, but I wanted to like the Warwick style, and I recently tried a few out. I just CANNOT get over the bodyshapes. Im too predictable, and im very vain...as in if its not a vintage style instrument I instantly think im in an awful tacky metal band. Thats not slating metal either, as I like a lot of metal, just not the whole 'pointy small guitar/bass' image that goes with it. Whats wrong with playing a cool retro sonic blue Jazz in a metal band? Nothing. LOL. I like that Rob from Metallica picked up a Ray 5 on his auditions.
-
Hmm....Id love a proper vintage Ray. But, im a bit wary of vintage instruments, unless Im buying it off the original owner (which is very rare). So, Ive decided to steer clear. Its weird, I have this view that a bass upto £1.5k is just about right for me. But, I would pay a little more for a special bass. If it was over £3k, handbuilt, I just wouldnt bother until I get on a better wage. Id rather have 4-8 awesome new basses than 2 vintage ones....but thats me at the moment. What I DO like is the new Classic Series Rays...thats the one bass I want in 2010. Probably more though hahahah.....

The new Skyline 5 string P looks nice, but Im not sure how it will compare to the new Fender P5....ive heard nothing but good reports on the P5. Im guessing the Lakland 5 string P's are 35"?
-
I find strings make a huge difference to every P ive owned, despite the fact the basses themselves are quite basic. Try out some DR High Beams/Fat Beams....the stainless steel will definitely give you that P bass growl that I love. Have the tone right up, play with a pick In fact, even cheaper strings like Rotos will do it no problems.
I've had pickup/preamp issues with 4 out of 5 Laklands I've had and have gutted all of them and reinstalled everything with new pots and wiring and sheilding with star earthing (more me being anal and obsessive rather than it actually needing being done. I've gutted and refitted the electrics in my Spectors and they had no issues whatsoever). Other than electrics the basses I've had we're all spot on, great fretwork, great fit and build. Good basses with a few minor niggles that I've been happy to fix. My DJs are both keepers and judging from a recent thread some of the lightest around. A Basses will be producing the new DJs soon so hopefully they'll have a DJ5 that'll be up to the mark for you. :-) I was very tempted to wait for the A Basses instead of the Lakland LOG BG5 but the P5 (P/J + East preamp) is something new and I've had loads of Jazz basses and they are never quite as RAWK as a P with a J at the bridge .
Yes I think you must have got a nice pair there Dave Bass also had a great black sparkle that had no issues. I asked a few guys on tbass and they were all pretty shocked. They had good necks, but one had frets sprouting through the binding in 3-4 places, and just looked old and used. Plus the fret buzz....nope...couldnt deal with it. So that one was a definite no. The other had minor faults all over....but the main problem was the Lakland logo wasnt straight! Sounds daft, but the colour for the inside of the lettering WAS straight, so it looked a right mess. Also had paint scrapped off where all the strings were resting near the nut on the headstock, (if you ask me, the nut was shaved down far too much). I realise they arent the USA models, but the price tag over here is very high for a bass with so many minor faults, hence I sent them both back. I would quite happily search for another, but perhaps now Ill wait and see what Lakkie do instead of the DJ5. Id quite like something that isnt sparkly..eg aged white, sunburst, so the new JO5 with blocks might be for me I bet we wont see them in the UK for about 2 years hahahah. I hope the BG5 gets sorted out soon.
Hello. May I draw your attention to my US Standard P-bass V that I'm currently looking to sell (it's in the Basschat Market Place)? I'm hoping for £750. I had a Seymour Duncan "J" style bridge pickup added, which I think works really well. I'm in York, so not impossibly far away if you wanted to try it out... Let me know if you're interested anyway. Cheers, Al
Hey... Thanks for the heads up Ill take a look

I cant decide if Lady Ga Ga is hot....

To update....the bass has been returned. Ive been talking to JTUK and Dave Bass about getting this bass for a long timeee! I was searching for a decent Lakland Skyline DJ5, any colour, any board. Ive tried three new ones now, and the QC was not upto scratch. Ive emailed Dan from Lakland to see if he can help. For now im giving up....Im also not 100% convinced the Lakland tone is perfect for me. The necks and style of the basses are amazing, but Im missing the sheer grunt of a USA Fender! Next plans for a 5 string? Wait for the new Ernie Ball Musicman Classic Series Stingray 5.
-
Is it a Skyline? I have tried 3-4 different (Skyline) DJ5's so far, and they have all been 'new'. Not one of them had top notch QC....each one had quite bad faults. My Fenders were finished better, and they are a lot less £'s. I really like Lakland and what they do, but Ive yet to find a DJ5 that is worth the £1200 retail price. I am still looking, and hopefully they will get a new dealer in the UK. Ive even emailed Dan asking him what can be done, but im guessing he is still busy post-NAMM.

I'd really like to have The Saturdays gig tbh: http://www.youtube.com/user/thesaturdaysof...u/5/iyIL5pNBMyA I was very interested in ther recent live video which was basically them in awesome underwear. Even the bass players equipment did NOT distract me. That gig has to be perfect!
could you explain the "new" cab covering issue, I am unclear on this, the guy in the outlet said they could come in, in 2 types?
Sure....no probs The old covering on the RS210/212 is the grey powdery rough coating, and TC got a few complaints about it. Its still alright though! Doesnt affect the sound obviously. They then went through a transition of the same type of material, but an almost black colour, but still matte. The new covering, seen on the RS112/Combo450 cab and I think the RS410 is smoother, shiny and black. Almost like the spray on the Berg AE series. Its much nicer IMO, hence Ive backordered the new finish. They have also apparently changed where the TC badge is placed. TC said they should be shipping the 210s in the new finish in late Feb time...but I dont mind if they are a little later. I think you can order the RS212s in the new finish now, as you can the RS112/Combo450/RS410. Its good to see they actually listenened to the reviews. It makes the cabs very good value if you ask me. They look good, sound great, and are a nice change for the norm. Oh, and they are much more easy to move from what Im used to.
it would be cooler if it had all its knobs too. i used to take the piss out of my mate for buying the best bass on the planet in such a rubbish colour, then i ended up buying one very similar, strangely enough i really like white rays now:)
My mate took the piss out of my MIJ Fender P in Oly White when I first got it when I was 15/16....and yep, I kinda thought 'did I buy the wrong colour?' Now Im 28 and I LOVE white basses, and I think he had poor taste.
unfortunatly i only own the one on the left:(
Now thats what Im talking about.....white mmmm!

Yeah, the combo is a good idea for those who want small or just the vertical stack, but I like the idea of all separate. Obviously a Mesa Walkabout would change my mind, but the RH is a damn good amp. I cant wait to get my cabs now.
-
My problem is, I cant find anything I like as much as the new Fenders, or Ernie Ball. Vintage ones would be the next step I guess, but I love new gear. God knows I tried to try new manufacturers, all this year in fact. Lakland, Sadowsky, Warwick, Spector, tried them all out, and a few different models. Still come back to the old fashioned Stingray/P/J. I intend to get a Stingray 5 at some point....so still not going for anything different.
-
One day when I have more space, a Matamp 2x12 and GT200 will be put on order. I tend to find the bands that use them are usually on the dirty blues/metal/hardcore type of thing. But, thats just as those scenes dig Matamp....im sure like most amps/cabs they can be used for whatever you like.
-
Hmm...there will be options, but I always choose Orange for dirt dirt dirt Im sure there is a way around it...passive bass?
