One day Mr Foxen I will learn what all this "doom" is about
THIS is almost DOOM, although verges on just super heavy rock n roll - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tb0xkgE97b8...feature=related Sorry OT!
2.
I normally hate muse, but i think they were great live. And the scissor sisters, brilliant, especially with the Kylie Minogue.
Scissor Sisters always come across extremely pro. Kate Nash was plain awful.
3. That is one HEAVY cab, I agree, but it does sound HUGE. I cant imagine wanting to move it around in this heat hahah!
4. The Bass Terror is damn loud. If you like your tone quite dirty its even louder because of the gain. I very much imagine it will sound huge through that cabinet.
5.
Anyone who thinks that is the work of a 3 piece ..well, words fail me. Still, lots of bands fly in stuff so no real big deal there anyway. Two years ago, I'd say they would have been the premier festival act...now it just doesn't work as well. They have loads of hits and anthems to parade but not sure they are still a worthwhile act in that sense on the basis of these performances. Drum sounds was awful, to my ears but I would imagine it is really hard the get their touring show up and running for a quick one-off festival rig so not that worried about the mixes as such as they must be a pig to do and needs loads of time. Swapping out so many basses..well, lets not go there...just another thing to bash them with, I'd say. If your basic sound is cluttered or changed so much..what is with so many swaps..? So..does nothing at all for me..
I have to agree with you there. Ive seen them live at Leeds Festival before and they seemed to have a hell of a lot more raw energy than they did last night. Certainly not the gig I was expecting. I quite like Muse, but there use of tons of effects live starts to get on my nerves after a while. Impressive noise for a 3 piece mind. Sorry, I have to say I personally think the move to Status is a bad one. They sounded tinny and hifi, not what Muse is about. But the TV sound obviously wasnt what it was like live. He is quite a good bass player, but jees they need to get a little more excited and interact with EACH OTHER. It just felt like I was watching someone do their day job with very little spark.
6.
the guy in The Cribs also had a vintagey looked s/b PBass - altho no great definition, guitars too loud - or just the mix sounding crap on the tv?
I saw the highlights for The Cribs and he seemed to have a nice vintage P bass....mmmm. Scissor Sisters bass player was using an Aguilar rig...nice to see something that isn't Ampeg. Dead Weathers bass was awesome. I'm guessing they are super expensive?! The Status sound definitely doesn't suit Muse; way too hifi!
7.
Cool, thank you. I also heard that the keyboards were doing some strange things. Not a new band as such. It's a U2 tribute band that I dep for when the bass player can't make it. I kind of got recommended as I know all the U2 stuff. Not really my cup of tea playing covers as I find it really hard to draw any emotion from and a bit like painting by numbers. Not a negative comment towards those who do covers but my 23 years of bass playing has always been originals so it feels a little weird playing covers However, a great bunch of musicians and they always go down really well. Encores every time and always people up dancing so still good fun and bonus that you get paid for it Guitarist is also going to play for my originals project.
Sounds great!
8. That screams power supply problem...sounds like it was fluctuating. I doubt it's your setup Is this a new band you've joined?
9. Plug in Baby is a classic... I could barely hear the bass if I'm honest but that's probably the TV. U2 were meant to headline weren't they? Until Bono became unable to do it.
10.
S2 with a headstock?
Not a fan of the Status basses he is using. The headless one looks more like a guitar it's that small. No offence chaps but that is far too 80s for my liking!
11.
Alleva Coppolo. 34", and yup, a rank headstock.
As much as I like Alleva, the headstocks are a bit 'meh'.
12.
Whilst it may be a little against the grain in a "P" thread, have you considered either the new East P-Retro or the Villex tone shaper. Both have been favourably received on BC and might present an interesting slant on the "P" sound. Otherwise, if you go down the pick-up route, a phone call to custom manufacturers like Wizard or Armstrong might be an idea. Tell them what you're after (in comparison to other pick-ups) and they might be able to do something for you.
Ah interesting slant, good idea! Especially the East P Retro.
13.
maybe you just want a jazz bass now but you aint aware of that? your next step could be strings. maybe you already doin it, but one P with flats other with rounds etc.
Got this part sorted already. I like the Jazz a hell of a lot, but the Precision just feels instantly 'right' and sits easier in a rock mix IMO. I have a set of TI flats to fit to one of the Ps once the Fender Nickels are well and truly ready to be changed.
14. As much as I realise the Shuker would be nice, its still not 'Precision' enough for me. I realise its not really a custom, but after investigating the custom route, its not something im really after. Im going to stick with what Ive got until I can look into the Custom Shop range. The 62 Reissue would be nice, so thats something to look into. Id prefer a Custom Shop though. I do like what Lakland do, but Ive had a nightmare trying to buy one in the past so I wont be going down that route.
15. Thanks for the input. Anyway, for me, it would have to stay simple...as originally designed. No extras, no fancy wood, (other than a lovely birdseye neck with rosewood board maybe) just a really well made Precision with the best pickup known to man. Im probably much better off sticking with what Ive got, as the next step is a LOT more money and might not offer that much more. Custom Shop Fender would be my next stop I think, (I havent heard one non-Fender that sound EXACTLY how I like a Precision to sound....yet.....and the Fender 'feel' is right for me).
16. Off topic, that sunburst is fantastic!
17. I have realised how much the Precision tone/neck profile is part of my playing. When I was around 13/14 I thought id upgrade from my MIJ Fender to something that wasnt a Precision. I was wrong. That tone and bodyshape have stayed with me and im hooked. I am now lucky enough to have two very nice 08-09 American Series Precision basses. Both are excellent examples of what Fender can do if the QC is high. This got me thinking. I love the tone, necks and style of the new Fenders...they made some great improvements. Is there anything other than Custom Shop Fender thats above these quality wise? Obviously a true vintage Fender would be a great investment but I doubt Id ever find one id be 100% happy with as I really dont know enough to pick a quality vintage. Before anyone comments, yes I am stuck on Fender with this, mostly. The NASH basses look great, but I doubt anything else would be 'Fender' enough for me. Sadowsky/Alleva are a no in this case. If Custom Shop/Vintage is the next step, then ill be sticking with what Ive got for a long time!
18. I love hearing the gain these monster amps can produce. I have put these up as I realise a few people wanted to know when the 1000 BAss Terror was due...well its due now apparently: http://www.youtube.com/user/BassGearMagazi...u/3/7rH308wDLvc http://www.youtube.com/user/BassGearMagazi...u/4/Rjar21N8-iQ
19. I would also suggest a Fender Bassman TV as they look fantastic!
20. I put a small review up of the BA115, and for it's size/price, it's a nice combo! I think the Rocket series are a step up, but I haven't tried one.
21. Thanks a lot
22. I find if I really cant get cabinets to a gig due to space/time etc then I check if backline cabs are provided and if they are ill just take an amp head. Failing that, just take the Sansamp/Tone Hammer. Lets face it, if you are carting about ANY 4x10, its STILL a 4x10. If its built with casters, and you have help for certain areas, you are absolutely fine no matter what weight. I can understand acoustic/double bass/quiet gigging types needs though. No point in taking a heavy cabinet when its just not necessary....but then again the difference between a neo 1x12 and a ceramic 1x12 are just not worth worrying about. I emailed Bergantino about 6 months ago, and Jim said that despite how far neo has come, it STILL won't please all players as it just doesnt 'feel' right or sound right to those players. I harp on about TC, but the RS cabinets are the closest ive come to loud/modern meets vintage/easy to transport. Im satisfied for sure.
23.
When everyone finally realises that bijou 2x8" speakers just don't reproduce the full bass grunt and shake your booty enough, everyone will be back to buying 8x10 & 2x15's like it's a whole new idea.... It's all cyclical...
I think I agree with this. It will all come back around again. I remember when Fender basses seemed a little less in the limelight, and it was all about more modern dare I say it 'metal' instruments (obviously not everywhere!). Retro/old school is cool, and popular once again. I think we will all get sick of small light cabinets, and I dont think for one second neo will completely overtake ceramic....ever. A 2x10 is small enough for me. I still want a Berg NV412 but Id never get to use it very often. Ive tried a variety of neo cabinets, and they are great, but I still hear something different. Perhaps I like cabinets thats add a little 'colour'.
24. I wouldn't go any buy one despite liking it, but I was shocked at the great tone at low volumes. Makes me want to use a 15 inch speaker for a little while.
25. Ive been using a practice rooms Ampeg BA115, and im VERY impressed with it for the cost and 100W it produces. With an American Precision, it really 'works'. I dont usually get on amazingly well with Ampeg, but this really works well. Im impressed. I cannot believe how cheap it is and how loud it gets. It competes with a drummer, 2 guitarists and vocalist with ease. Anyone else tried one? It tilts back as well.
