1. I have realised how much the Precision tone/neck profile is part of my playing. When I was around 13/14 I thought id upgrade from my MIJ Fender to something that wasnt a Precision. I was wrong. That tone and bodyshape have stayed with me and im hooked. I am now lucky enough to have two very nice 08-09 American Series Precision basses. Both are excellent examples of what Fender can do if the QC is high. This got me thinking. I love the tone, necks and style of the new Fenders...they made some great improvements. Is there anything other than Custom Shop Fender thats above these quality wise? Obviously a true vintage Fender would be a great investment but I doubt Id ever find one id be 100% happy with as I really dont know enough to pick a quality vintage. Before anyone comments, yes I am stuck on Fender with this, mostly. The NASH basses look great, but I doubt anything else would be 'Fender' enough for me. Sadowsky/Alleva are a no in this case. If Custom Shop/Vintage is the next step, then ill be sticking with what Ive got for a long time!
2. I love hearing the gain these monster amps can produce. I have put these up as I realise a few people wanted to know when the 1000 BAss Terror was due...well its due now apparently: http://www.youtube.com/user/BassGearMagazi...u/3/7rH308wDLvc http://www.youtube.com/user/BassGearMagazi...u/4/Rjar21N8-iQ
3. I would also suggest a Fender Bassman TV as they look fantastic!
4. I put a small review up of the BA115, and for it's size/price, it's a nice combo! I think the Rocket series are a step up, but I haven't tried one.
5. Thanks a lot
6. I find if I really cant get cabinets to a gig due to space/time etc then I check if backline cabs are provided and if they are ill just take an amp head. Failing that, just take the Sansamp/Tone Hammer. Lets face it, if you are carting about ANY 4x10, its STILL a 4x10. If its built with casters, and you have help for certain areas, you are absolutely fine no matter what weight. I can understand acoustic/double bass/quiet gigging types needs though. No point in taking a heavy cabinet when its just not necessary....but then again the difference between a neo 1x12 and a ceramic 1x12 are just not worth worrying about. I emailed Bergantino about 6 months ago, and Jim said that despite how far neo has come, it STILL won't please all players as it just doesnt 'feel' right or sound right to those players. I harp on about TC, but the RS cabinets are the closest ive come to loud/modern meets vintage/easy to transport. Im satisfied for sure.
7.
When everyone finally realises that bijou 2x8" speakers just don't reproduce the full bass grunt and shake your booty enough, everyone will be back to buying 8x10 & 2x15's like it's a whole new idea.... It's all cyclical...
I think I agree with this. It will all come back around again. I remember when Fender basses seemed a little less in the limelight, and it was all about more modern dare I say it 'metal' instruments (obviously not everywhere!). Retro/old school is cool, and popular once again. I think we will all get sick of small light cabinets, and I dont think for one second neo will completely overtake ceramic....ever. A 2x10 is small enough for me. I still want a Berg NV412 but Id never get to use it very often. Ive tried a variety of neo cabinets, and they are great, but I still hear something different. Perhaps I like cabinets thats add a little 'colour'.
8. I wouldn't go any buy one despite liking it, but I was shocked at the great tone at low volumes. Makes me want to use a 15 inch speaker for a little while.
9. Ive been using a practice rooms Ampeg BA115, and im VERY impressed with it for the cost and 100W it produces. With an American Precision, it really 'works'. I dont usually get on amazingly well with Ampeg, but this really works well. Im impressed. I cannot believe how cheap it is and how loud it gets. It competes with a drummer, 2 guitarists and vocalist with ease. Anyone else tried one? It tilts back as well.
10.
Find a lightweight speaker you like and nail a RH450 to the top of it
Damn good sense. I'm looking for a small cab that's 4 ohms and the only ones I like the look of are the EA Whizzy cabs. Seriously light and small.
11. Are they doom though?
12.
At least get my username right you.... debutant! I got your pm, and the one from a Zach and an Essential Tension so now... it's only 3 strips left
Whoops! That's me rushing on the iPhone. Many thanks.
13. Let me know on that TF Fretless by the way...should you ever want to sell it.
14. Jigster your LM2 is going to sound massively different now! Probably a lot easier to get your sound. Those amps are capable of serious low end, in fact the louder it goes the deeper it goes according to Talkbass chaps, (which is different to the F1/500 as that gets tighter). A little goes a LONG way with the VPF/VLE. Probably the best two knobs on the amp....I leave the EQ mainly flat and just use the filters sparingly.
15. PM'd Mr Grand Wazoo!
16. Definitely real. 17.
I didn't mention Bergantino, Epifani or Mesa Boogie because I thought they would be too expensive. Surely with the economic problems in Greece they'll be some good bass equipment coming up on the second hand market at bargain prices?
+1. A Berg/Mesa is already top money...much more than the others mentioned, and it would cost a fortune to get over there. Then the OP might not even like it, but again he might not like the others. To me, there is no one definitive 'best 4x10', and the only brands I haven't tried are Epifani and Mesa. With 2x12s the DB212 has beat virtually all competition for myself when it came to core tone, but I haven't as yet found a 4x10 that was amazingly better than the others. I think a careful look around the used Market and products available new at lower pricing is a good idea.
18.
new as in 2010? I'm not too keen on the 70's kinda sound, myself so other than the highway one I was looking at the '62 RI and the 60s jazz. I'm going to try some in my local music shop, it'll be interesting to see how the pickups compare to the fender CS ones I have in my DIY Jazz. I'm sure I'm gassing for an EBMM ray, and could get one used for 800, or a bit more, buttgeonly ones that tickle me are the pre EB ones and the newer classic series ( classics purely on design ) although that big al bass seems interesting aswell.
Don't worry the American Standards are the 60s pickup location. They reverted back to this after the 70s I do believe. Believe me you can get a nice warm tone and the classic growl from a 2008-2010 American Standard. Rays are always a good choice!
19. I'd be quite interested to get a home made mute on one of my Ps just to try it.
20. Id keep it as it is. Down the line you might regret it. Keep it fretted and save for a second hand or new fretless Stingray/Sterling/Big Al/Bongo...they would be my choice in fretless, or a Tony Franklin Fretless P.
21. Ive used the SVT 4x10 myself for a few gigs, and I wasnt overly impressed. It does the job, but I went for the Orange in the end as it feels like its pushing more low end. But its all personal choice.
22.
P? Check. Flats? Check. You're done. PS - don't be afraid to roll the tone off.
+1 Dont be afraid of using it as stock, (apart from the strings, which are suprisingly good on these new models, but are quite zingy nickels until you wear them in). The stock parts are very very good. I wouldnt change a thing on mine.
23.
yiiip., 4.5 hours to go and its standing at £815, now I wouldn't pay a penny more as they are about £1250 new when haggled, interesting to see how much it will fetch in the end.
£1250 new isnt bad at all! Quite surprised if im honest.
24.
Its a nice though but the GAS just keeps on coming!
This time I have to. Money has to go elsewhere from now on....! For a year or so anyway
