1. I'm pretty sure you can use both.
2. But having trouble following it tbh. https://youtu.be/pqUtaEYteEk
3. You should measure the resistance with them disconnected!
4. Looking at the pics I think there just in the lacquer. I can't say for certain though. However if the cracks were not described and were hard to see in the pics then I would certainly either send it back or get a partial refund (if I knew it was just the lacquer). I think as others have said you should get a refund and send it back.
5.
Tell me about it! Out of all the SWR bits I've got around only one has proved tricky. The Redhead, which is a fairly early version..has a hum which has been diagnosed as coming from the mains transformer (probably just showing its age). Its not a terrible hum, but it is beaming into the preamp circuit so will be present on the DI send etc. Good news is I can still source a direct replacement from the USA maker of the factory transformer, bad news is that after shipping and added import costs its almost as much as I paid for the amp. I could source a UK made equivalent a lot cheaper. Really should make a decision on this one.....
Are you sure it doesn't just need tightening?
6.
Thought I'd posted this here before but obviously not. Here's the innards of a man sized amp 😎
What is it?
7.
I contacted Ashdown about my ABM as it makes a strange background noise. I got an email back saying what it might be, suggested I get 'it looked at'...that was it.
What did they say it could be? I've seen a few abms that have a weird noise and its the power amp section vibrating! Seriously they make a loud weird noise. A real fix would be for ashdown to stop mounting the heatsinks like they do on the board and use a few extra screws to mount the board to the chassis. Its also the reason why sometimes the solder joints crack on them. More frequent in the combos. Mostly ive seen people put a piece of heat resistant rubber under the board.
8. I like Ashdown. On many levels. But there designs for durability in the power amp section are rubbish. If something goes or there's weird noises its always in there power amp sections.
9. Does it definitely need a refret?
10. There is no way I would spend any more than 500 quid on something I would not be able to test out (bass wise). Look locally for similar used basses and try them out if possible. Most bass players won't mind you going and having a play. Or maybe there is a friendly bc member that you can go see or maybe even ask if they would come to you. You never know.
11.
Well, the screw is still firmly in the saddle. I've soaked it in WD40, I've tried heating it and none of the shops round me have penetrating oil. Brute force hasn't worked as my pliers can't grip the screw well enough and I've stripped the hole in the top of it too. Fender say I've got to buy a whole new bridge and because of the screw spacing on the base plate there are no direct replacements. Is there anything else I can't try to get it loose?
Better off buying a new saddle or bridge now tbh But Two molegrips will work or one on the thread. One holding the saddle the other on the end of the screw apply pressure in opposite directions. Then turn it around once out so you can still use it since you stripped the top. Assuming that the procedure has not damaged the thread etc Then wipe the threads etc with wd40 Or sometimes putting it in a vice and using a very small bit can get them out
12. Fret or capo the first fret as normal. It does make a difference how much will be variable but its actually pretty obvious when you think of it because it would be like setting your relief without fretting at the first!. The zero fret will be at the same height at a bass without a zero frets nut height!. Accuracy or proper setup is certainly not over rated. All those tiny measurements and details add up. Which is why is someone comes to me and said hey can you make my bass play as good as any other well set up bass I would say yes.
13. sh*t forgot to even vote last time. And I'm struggling to even find the drive to play. Although I have not even worked on a bass in a few weeks. Have worked on a guitar or two though. As for the drum track thing its cool I think but must be kept relatively simple although. To make access as easy as possible to every one maybe there should be a defined rule on click and drum tracks. Not that there is a huge attraction to the recording section. If I do record I might do a vid though it may be 60 seconds of me crying sobing why why! Into the pickup ive heard the salt and snot really mellows out a pu.
14. The only real no no is bass through a driver voiced for guitar. After that anything goes
15. Cool where is the amp though haha
16. I've had a couple of mim basses one mij and a mia bass personally. I've also worked on a few more of each of those and also plenty of squires. I've also had a good look at the more expensive line from 1500 to 2500 when in shops. I can honestly say the best fenders after a setup were probably the mim ones for all rounders and price. Followed by the mia ones. Then it becomes a bit more of a lotter. And the best setup any fender taken ive had my hands on was a squire mustang!. The worst was a mia which was the oldest and had a ski jump in the neck that the owner was not bothered about as it still was setup great for him, of course if I had delt with it then it would have been ok. Mij fenders seem to have the worst electrics I can safely say that. But once you get above squire cv territory the waters are very muddy and what you get seems to be absolutely random in build quality and I mean I'm looking mainly at the aspects that effect setup. So the nut, fret wire quality and how level or sharp the frets are, how level the board is which is still a huge variation on fenders! And it does matter even after frets leveling, neck angle and is there any ski jump etc, bridge placement. I like fenders overall.
17. How about the opening bit of the pink panther?
18.
If nut height is too low it shows up playing 3-7 frets as 'back fouling', where strings foul frets behind the held fret. Sometimes which a clanky feel and sound, but lacking elasticity and proper feel when making the note. Too high shows up as a high open string playing action, a long way to depress open stings when fretting and a slow action, not nimble. All other things on setup being equal. HTH! LD
This also if you get at around the 13th on the E your string should not make a clanky sh*t sound by fouling from the nut to fretted note. That's just bad and lazy setup if it happens. No it won't really come through the amp but the feel will just be terrible.
19. Why only British made. Don't get me wrong I also like the idea of having a British amp but there's so many great foreign amps about.
20.
Walking On The Moon
Has to be. For a recognisable song. I'm also thinking billy jean but not for its first three notes. Certinly for the first 3 notes around the world it must be walking on the moon
21. I'm going to have a listen and vote tomorrow. I must say I'm a little disappointed again in the responce that the noodle bar has had I really thought the simple idea which take very little to enter or listen too would of had a few more entries. Ah my dreams lie in tatters on multiple fronts once again lol. Only kidding :/
22.
Thanks.
Zero heft tho!
23. There could be an argument a small piece of card will actual make a better contact as it will compress into all the little tooling marks and natural grain. Once compressed it would be very hard too. I'm not debating this btw I'm just looking at it from a different angle lol. However a small section is unlikely to make no difference at all no matter what its made of (rubber may be a bad choice) as long as the shim is of reasonable thickness and it doesn't need to be so thick its lifting a significant portion of the neck up from the body.
24.
Little bit late, had a busy evening and got back about 11:45, figured I'd try and make a noodle, missed the dealine slightly but here it is anyway. https://soundcloud.com/user-623375481/too-much-cheese-before-bedtime
I'm liking the theme! Nightmarish very good.
