I started playing with my thumb (as Leo intended lol) But obviously found its limitations quickly so started using two fingers. I had to train myself, I found simple blues and slower stuff helped me at first then moved on to sing with a higher tempo. Also playing staccato notes and using your other finger to mute the string. Urgh I think all my really bad self taught habits have wasted 2 years of my 3 and a half years learning.

Neck relief on a single cut neck through
Twincam replied to franzbassist's topic in Repairs and Technical
I believe that it doesn't mean anything as there is no difference after the 12th, from bass to treble. The truss rod won't have any more effect on the treble side or not in a significant way. Else you would hear more about single cuts having an Twisting issue. Your more likely to get more of a difference (twisting forces) with a standard neck with no extra support bass to treble. But you set them up in a standard way. But if there was any significant difference you could try using balanced tension strings. Edit to say that I'm talking about 4/5 strings for anything more twisting forces can have more of an effect and there will be some that use twin truss rods and others that say one is ok. -
I've been using this head for the last few month and have to say it sounds great. It's the later Peavey head with all the bells and whistles. I use it with everything engaged. Drive, compression pre shape etc and it spits out a wonderful clanky crunch. As this head is getting on a bit I was wondering what else is available that could offer up a similar racket. I'm thinking maybe an Ampeg svt pro 3 but have yet to actually try one. I did have a Ashdown evo 111 but it didn't quite have the attack. I also own an Ashdown Ctm 100 but that's way to nice for my current requirements so will be for the chop if I can find a TE replacement. Any recommendations? Cheers
Not sure an svt 3 pro would suit tbh. There a bit tame!, they do sound good though. I fancied one for a while and tried out a few. Bought an Bugera bvp 5500, a kind of clone of the ampeg, all valve front end etc, after seeing a thread on talkbass comparing the 2 side by side and build quality etc. The bvp 5500 does exactly the same as the 3 pro but actually does proper overdrive too and costs almost 1/5th the price of the ampeg. There cheap enough to give a try.

I've voted. Not many entries so I bored for 2 this month. Which was agwin and timhiggins. Having now listened to moonbassalpha's noodle it reminds me of something French like from a old French film maybe? Hopefully many more entries next month. Least get it into double figures.

Well the wem was sold a while ago. I cured the rattles. Also swapped out the celestion 15" blackback g15 and sold it for £100. Replaced it with a celestion bg15 100w which actually improved its tone all round but it did lose some character. But you could really crank it without speaker breakup was very loud with a guitar. Ok for bass at lower volume. Worked very well into an actual bass cab too. If yours buzzes like mine did the valve heater lines are not breaded from the factory. Twisting them makes a whole world of difference! I still have the original mullard power tubes for it. As I replaced out of a precaution. But the old mullards definitely sounded better. Actually wish I kept the thing now!
@blisters - I use raw linseed oil on my rosewood board. After a few applications it fills pores and tends to harden so it seasons and protects - I use flatwounds so they don't mark the board much anyway. You're leaving the remains of the frets in there so when you stop the strings they'll be making contact with metal rather than wood unless you like to slide around a lot - I honestly don't know if there'll be much difference in tone depending on where a string is stopped regarding contact with metal vs wood. For sure some type of hard epoxy coating would be the way to go to give the board a consistent surface.
Yes too linseed oil but its best to use the boiled varity. Just because of drying times. Raw oil can take a few days to dry, depending on how thick the application, which should be minimal, but on occasion some boards do need that bit more, it can get on fingers then strings etc if played before really drying.
I saw that the noodle bar needed a bit of support so i popped upstairs and quickly banged one out on my phone !!! its a messy warts and all affair but you did ask for it https://soundcloud.com/timothy-terrence-higgins-iv/noodled-haze
Cool. Very rchp i thought.

Overdrive fuzz sound on Cort A4 with mids up - should it?
Twincam replied to MisterT's topic in Repairs and Technical
The soldering does look rubbish. You can just get some electrical tape and lightly and gentle wrap it in it not like a blanket tho. One layer just in case in needs unwrapping lol. Interesting its not doing it since you opened it up. No doubt a bad connection or something shorting a little somewhere. -
Here’s this month’s offering: It’s the last bit of a tune I presented to the rest of the band – working title is “Nil By Mouth” because I don’t have any lyrics as yet. https://soundcloud.com/agwin/nil-by-mouth-exerpt If you fancy taking the time to have a listen I’ve included the (2mins 45) Sibelius sketch that I made so that they could get an idea of what I had in mind. As yet I’ve not managed to find a “Screaming Strat” sound on Sibelius so it’s a twangy guitar sound and there’s a bit in the middle which is minus the Dive Bombing guitar solo but you’ll get the idea https://soundcloud.com/agwin/nil-by-mouth
I liked the noodle. Although I wasn't expecting the blues turnaround at the end haha. I also listened to the sibelius sketch. Well it did autoplay lol. And pretty cool, I liked it also. I see what you are getting at. I would like to hear it played tho as I couldn't get past the feeling I was listening to a video game from the early 90s if you get me. But yeah cool.

It does seem very quiet in here. I will have an entry just before or on the deadline.

One thing about setting intonation on a frestless is unless your finger is exactly in the same position then each time you will get a different result. There obviously very sensitive to even tiny mm differences. But you still should be able to get a high degree of intonation. You do have to be very very precise. Setting up a fretless isn't really different to a fretted bass. You can use a bit less relief if and only if the board is well plained, no imperfections or tiny bumps etc. Most fretted basses are not good in this regard as they just level the frets and manufactures do spend a bit of extra time on a fretless board. But I read you have put time into it so it should be ok. As someone above said you can lower the nut a little bit too.
Many of the bands that don't have gear on stage, ZZ Top, U2 etc have the amps by the side of the stage, being operated by their sound crew.
What sort of band have there cabs at the side of the stage?
-
I think it's a bit of an odd reply for someone to say "what kind of band have no amps/cabs onstage. But having thought about it. Many big successful groups still have gear onstage. You could say it's not needed but it is for the image that comes with some types of music. Now I would not enjoy a band any less of they were pa only but I would honestly think in the back of my mind that there is something missing. A backline adds to the show subconsciously. Unless it's an acoustic set, or orchestra etc. This is in no offense to anyone at all. But to me and I'm guessing a lot of others it looks a bit sterile, too commercial even. Kinda it does take away some of the magic of a live show. From pub gig to stadium events. Also it make a big stage look sparse.
Might be a good idea to give Ashdown tech support a ring and check on the lowest output imedance that the head will run at - the online manual states 8ohm for the five-fifteen head and lists minimum impedance for the MAG and ABM heads at 4ohm. http://ashdownmusic....75823_64421.pdf
Indeed. Although since it does have a output for another cab I would of thought it was 4-8ohm. But best check the back of the amp or ask ashdown.

Thinking of quitting the band....volume issues.
Our guitarist uses 20 watt valve combo. He is frequently painfully loud, and I sometimes struggle to hear my 300 was bass combo over him.
I had a wem dominator bass 15w. I replaced the 15" speaker to a higher power full range one. Uses with guitar you could really crank it without speaker breakup it was painfully loud. With guitar It easy matched my 4x10 approx 300w bass setup at the time. -

Ampeg BA115HP *price drop* £130
Twincam replied to leemarseillebass's topic in Amps and Cabs For Sale
Hi seen your ads on gumtree. I see on the ad here you've listed as the hp model where on gumtree there listed as hpt models. The hpt model with the valve in the pre is much more desirable. So just to say if indeed it is the hpt model you might want to edited the ad title as it might increase chance of a sale. -
The best (simplest) thing to do if you wanted to make your own cab is make a 2x10 8ohm. So 2x16 ohm speakers, no crossover needed if no tweeter. Adding the extra 8ohm cab to what I assume is already an 8ohm ashdown cab will get you to 4ohm so you don't need to build a 4ohm cab. The extra speakers will give you a small volume increase and if the cab gives out any extra power at 4ohm then that will give you a very very small increase in volume. So yes if you need a little extra volume then why not. But don't expect miracles. I won't assume anything about how much you know already but building a good cab is much harder than you think. And takes a lot of research and even then understanding driver specs fully and how they function in a cab and port tuning etc is an art form. I only know the basics myself and I'm trying to learn a bit more about the advanced stuff currently. So maybe you could just copy the design of your existing cab and find drivers that match the ashdown specs etc. Just to make it easier. There's some very knowledgeable members on this site who I'm sure will give advice if you really want to build your own cab. There's some build threads too that you can learn from.

Thinking of quitting the band....volume issues.
Twincam replied to Coilte's topic in General Discussion
Wasn't the high volume levels the reason for all the smack Cream were on? You know to dull the pain lol. I've never heard a band where the bassist was to loud, compared to the rest of the band that is. But I have heard loads of bands the vocals and bassist have been drowned out by the guitar(s) or the drums have been too much. There's no way your average guitar player needs more than 30w. In fact every great sounding guitar player ive heard (not including big stage gigs etc) has had modest amps. -
In 1999/00 I was 16. My Fav band was Talking Heads they were well out of fashion I guess by then, I wasn't cool or trendy. But didn't care either.

Overdrive fuzz sound on Cort A4 with mids up - should it?
Twincam replied to MisterT's topic in Repairs and Technical
Is this the one with the bartolini pickups and eq? No it's not supposed to inject any noise. However you can overload the gain, but as you said you think it's not that. Try it with the gain lower. You swapped the battery and its the same. You have tried it with your soundcard still the same. So from all that I would think that if it never did that before it went into the shop then the shop has possibly done something that's made it act up. Maybe take the rear cover off, take a pic and post it.
