1. Why not just have a switch fitted you can flip and leave the jack in. That is what I would do.
2.
I think the difference here is you're talking all ifs and buts. If the PA goes down I could have my amp, but what am I going to power if the PA has gone down anyway? Bottom line for me is this, we are primarily a wedding band, we've got good kit, and have to rely on that. Can't be finishing a set with no singer or asking the crowd to sing along instead. Doesn't work like that. Not for us anyway. We do our utmost to look after our kit, and if something does happen to blow up, there ain't a lot that can be done. My plan is eventually go straight into the desk and I'll take a DI pedal in my bag. Muzz how is it not practical for some situations? Do you use different PAs depending on the gig size? We have got our PA that we use in all our gigs. Might be overkill for some, but it looks the part, and that's what a volume slider is for right
The thing is a professional band or any band that get paid to do a job. Should have all angles covered. Yes pa, yes iem if that's giving you what you want. But why not everyone have a small amp, bar drums (if acoustic) and singer included. Just to finish a gig. You wouldn't take just one Mic or one instrument cable. "If something does blow up, there ain't a lot to be done" I really don't like that statement if I hired you and something went wrong. I would be like so is that it? Don't you have like another amp etc? So if something went wrong that's it just pack up?
3. Oh I'm not poo pooing IEM at all really. And the no amp thing looking pants was more tongue in cheek lol. I just think why not take both. Ok if a pa goes down it might be an issue where you still have a channel you could use it for vocals, again a backline depending on what size gig etc etc could get you through. Or maybe you can run the vocals through an instrument amp. Or if a smaller pub gig you may get away with no pa for vocals and go acoustic but the bass will still need an amp. And you can always do an instrumental or get the crowd to sing along etc. Can't just pack up because there's no singer. I know there all what ifs and with today's electrics less likely to happen but it still could.
4.
Because with decent fitting inears you wouldn't hear your rig anyway. Less sound on stage = cleaner mix out front.
Yeah the first bit is obvious. The second bit is not always a fact there's loads of great sounding bands that have plenty of on stage volume. I understand the concept but it just seems wrong. I know things are pretty reliable but what if something goes wrong, what if you find you monitoring goes down, what if the pa goes down and your in a situation where a backline could of got you through a gig? Etc etc I just think its a back up and as equipment is getting lighter its not so much of a pain. And you can always turn your backline down if its messing with the sound out front. So imo yeah you don't need an amp at all but might you need one maybe and bands with nothing on the stage look so boring lol.
5. Is there a reason you wouldn't want an amp? Even something small but half capable. Seems with all these tiny heads and lightweight cabs its not a massive hassle having a lightweight setup too. Why not have both? in ear monitors and a little rig.
6. Going to catch up on these later. I have a noodle myself. And I'm allowed to record it at my ex girlfriends house to, she is also cooking food. Alas she has said she wants to hear my noodle and in no way wants to see my noodle! haha
7.
You think there's enough to re crown these??
Yeah using a crowning file and a lot of patience. Rather than a pre shaped crowning tool. It would be close but do able. Would improve (to some) the fretting. However saying that I wouldn't do it unless flats or tapewounds were being used as rounds would take the crown off quicker then you would be in the same position or worse. At least flat like that rounds won't eat into the metal for a while.
8. The trace elliot 7215smc combo I had was still the loudest 200w through a single 15 I've ever heard. Only valve watts are louder. I imagine one mated with a modern cab eg barefaced would be awesome. Shame I hated its tone with a passion lol
9.
Well here are some close ups of the fret on my 64 Precision, they are dressed very low but it plays beautifully!
I could actually re crown those!
10. Those frets have years of life left in them they just need a leveling, re crown and a good polish. You have no idea how bad some frets can get before they no good. I've worked on so so much worse than what you have there.
11.
SWR SM1500. What a monster! Weighs as much like one too I guess.
Just looked it up. Very cool!
12. I like the bit were the lass walks in behind, just as John says "these f**kers never yield" and she thinks ooops and makes a quick exit.
13.
Either would be vastly superior to the carlsbro 115 monstrosity i gigged in the 90s....
Haha I had one a few years ago when I first started playing was an upgrade to my tiny practice amp. Was pretty loud but very dull and had a horrible droaning noise I could never eq out. Unfortunately very reliable too. Apparently its still going strong.
14. I then must go with what others are saying and say on reflection drum tracks of any type should be a no. Lets just keep the rules simple as possible. Tbh I'm all up for have it just bass no fx at all. Although would then be adding gain and overdriving an amp be an effect or slashing the speaker? lol. I think the current rules are ok bass, simple effects. Simple metronome/click. One track. No loopers. No drum tracks of any kind. 4 strings, standard tuning only!...................... Just kidding.
15. I've had success with trimming then using a lighter run lightly over the surface (be sensible if doing that tho!) on scruffy carpeted cabs. Really does work wonders!. However in this case think your knackered lol
16. A lot of Wham stuff has great baselines in.
17. Love the colouring! Urgh jealous of your bass and amp.
18. Dare I suggest you might consider having your current cab ported. By someone in the know or even having a go yourself. I did some experiments admittedly on old crap gear I wasn't bothered about and the difference was huge! From sealed to wrongly ported (still improvement) then correctly ported (a lot louder and deeper!) tho it was a bodge job for fun. But done correctly and well it might save money and give the results your looking for. Just a thought.
19.
Components in parallel will reduce the resistance reading across the pickup, but never increase it. So while measuring a pickup coil in circuit will under-read slightly, a 256k reading almost certainly indicates an open coil. I suspect the meter will be seeing the 250k resistance of the pot, and the coil would measure open if tested out of circuit. Depending where the break is, it may be possible for the repairer to just unwind a couple of turns and re-solder rather than doing a full re-wind.
Good point! And likely correct. But I would still of tested unsoldered. And any pots etc unsoldered just to double check before sending anything off.
20.
The original 80's Jazz Bass Special and active Power Jazz Bass Specials were both made in Japan only. I think the Lyte and JP90 were also Japanese. The Jazz Bass Special (albeit with a slightly more P bass neck) is the model that Duff McKagan used for many years. Fender eventually and more recently made a signature model and that indeed is made in Mexico now. Only in that opaque white though. The original special's came in white, red, black, silver and I've even seen a couple which are a sort of ummm.. Aqua-light blue!
After the lyte Japan they made the same model in Mexico but it was called something else. But a similar looking bass and active anyhow. Ah im thinking of the fender zone bass. I knew it would come to me. Thanks for the info though always good to know then I can look cool infront of other bass guys lol. Not keen on that design or any of the following similar that followed.
21.
Oooh and Japanese Fender Jazz Bass Special. lovely
I think they also made these in Mexico? Or am I thinking the Japan lyte and then the next version! Or is this that version. I'm confused now
22. I liked the neck profile on this, its flat at the back like the graphite models (or some of them anyhow not a status expert), very comfortable and that is coming from someone who struggles with larger necks and other 5 strings. If this was fretted I would of been very interested myself. Interesting that the wood neck on this 5 strings weighs less than some status graphite 4 string necks.
23.
The frets are going up and down like speed bumps in some places - it's a 1978 model, so it's had a bit of a journey. I suspect it's a little past a simple truss rod tweak and a fret-dress. P
Who said anything about a truss rod tweak and fret dress. I'm talking about a proper re leveling, re crowning and mirror like polish. Works wonders!
24. And too add to what I said that's the same when testing pots. If you measure when things are connected its going to effect the reading. So your measurements are not accurate there.
