Inspired by this little conversation, I present my own offering: https://soundcloud.com/white_elephant/close-enough-for-jazz-basschat-noodle-bar-june16 Fretless Fender Jazz straight into the mixer and then into Audacity with a little compression.
Is the cat used as a mute? Nice little noodle there.
You want entries..? You got entries... June Noodle-bug ... ... and it serves you right. (No-one knows the difficulties involved in such simple things such as taking a ruddy photo per month, or playing just one minute (one lousy minute..!) of bass, let alone coming up with a whole new Composition..! No wonder I'm extenuated..! Still, it's worth it..! )
Action sounds a bit low. Its is nice to hear all those little sounds tho.

Looks good if cheap I may pick one up (bass)

Well from having a custom made approx 2k instrument to a £130 (I overpaid) bit of a scruffy 1984 aria pro 2 (passive) brings me back down to earth with a bump. Needed a shim in the nut (done). Needs the neck pocket worked on or the neck heal worked on as the angle is just not right looks like its got a huge shim in there and I genuinely thought I would find one in there. Frets are pretty level though one or two might get some work the bass is well played but fret wear is minimal. Neck is ok but untill I get the neck angle right I'm struggle with the higher action. But I think profile is all wrong for me. Of and the E saddle typically someone has got it stuck and head is stripped. I can do all the work easy enough but I have a lack of motivation. Camt even turn up the volume as everything rattles in the house lol. However I do really like its tone. The rear pu is a bit weak. Front pu is nice. Definetly 80s dare I say? Well least I have an instrument again.
Patience, lad; patience. (... and you may regret that remark if I do manage to contribute..! )
Funny my recent ex gf said I lack patience. I'm now trying to learn it.

Yes I shall give them a listen later on too. We need more entries though!
joking aside, you will find there are 2 types of pot available these are Linear and Logarithmic. It's really down personal preference, but i prefer the linear ones. Log has a lot of the adjustment all up one end of the turn of the pot.
Indeed. It will be a preference thing. Although if using an active circuit probably best to stick with the manufacturers choice of pot. With passive you can do a lot more experimentation.

There very sensitive too power condition and go into protect mode. So definitely worth trying on another socket in another room.
Totally OT but the new EVO IV ABM is not class D, it's still Class A/B They have done some class D ABMs but they are all with the EVO III preamp as far as I know.
Ah I thought they had all moved over. Well hopefully there not using the exact same power stage design just "updated" as the design from the first abm to the evo iii is terrible. Not in sound or power I may add. Just in reliability. I've had issues and I've seen others have very similar issues. Although plenty are still running fine. Put me off though.

Beautiful Fender mustang 64 reissue mij. In fantastic condition!. I've owned this twice and recently got it back in a part exchange. As said its in fantastic condition, it does have two "classic" very faint hairline cracks in the poly paint surface at the neck heal. Other than that it has been very very well looked after, very clean. Lovely neck, in mint condition with tinted finish. Brand new strings fitted. Can be heard on this month's Basschat noodle challenge. Now sold thanks too the bc forum. with hardcase. Will be very well packaged. The price won't be lowered on this and I don't believe you will find one in better condition for the price. Will knock off £40 if picked up (Durham). Straight sale preferred but might trade for something with a thin neck, 4 strings only please. Try me. However any trades I will require you to send the bass for evaluation first as I'm really fussy about what I like. And if I don't like it I will pay postage back to you and refund you the initial costs, so you won't lose out. Slightly serious question. Why no lime oil?
-
Looks nicely done although a bit too much for me and I'm not convinced the bottom edge would have that much wear all along it unless it was over 200 years old and gigged every week. But I do like it and think it looks good.
If lemon oil was that acidic wouldn't the lemon dissolve itself ?
Good question.
I've often wondered this about stomach acids...it can digest meat that you've eaten but not the stomach wall itself. Strange?
Isn't it protected by mucus. Mucus for fretboards?
-
I'm not entirely clear.. are you conceding that lemon oil is different from scented mineral oil (which was your original argument and the source of your derogatory comments) or not? While I'm here, it occurs to me that your notion of acidity is slightly at odds with mine. You do understand that there's different degrees of acidity I presume? You also understand that not all acids are corrosive in the way you seem to think? I've been using this stuff for well over 20 years: I've never had frets corrode. Or fall out. Or indeed do anything other than what they were put there to do. I've had it in contact with my skin over long periods of time (and so have my students). Last time I looked (a few seconds ago) all my fingers looked as well as can be expected from a man my age, and I never had any complaints from any of my students on that score. Here's an article that might help: http://www.answers.com/Q/What_are_some_examples_of_weak_acids_and_weak_bases You're welcome. Serious point: if you don't want to put anything on your fretboard, that's entirely up to you. The information I provided above is correct, and changing the subject ain't gonna change that. When you've availed yourself of the relevant facts, perhaps we can talk about this again.
Yes I understand there is both. I just didn't realise anyone would be daft enough to use real lemon oil on wood I thought real lemon oil has been used as a traditional degreaser. But turns out there's a history of it. Well like history we have moved on. Yes different degrees of acidity of course it's not a strong form of acid but the fact it's used as a degreaser and cleaning agent, the fact it removes corrosion metal frets. Would suggest that at a microscopic level there's going to be no good come from anything acidic being used on a degradable substance like wood that relies on its natural oils etc which lemon oil will remove. And all the acidic oil building up under the frets, no thanks would not risk it myself. Like most things it will do a reasonable job for a while as its mixed with mineral oil. The key to wood preservative is too keep it in its natural state. Not wet it or drive in moisture or to have any chemical reactions and no stripping of its natural oils. All products are damaging to its natural state some more than others. I use linseed oil very sparingly because in my view it the lesser of evils.
I wonder if this might be a good time to distinguish between the necessity of fretboard treatments and their desirability. As to whether fretboard treatment products are necessary, well clearly opinion is divided. Be that as it may, good fretboard treatments do have a positive influence on the instrument, in terms both of playability and appearance (leaving aside their benefits to the wood - most would agree they do benefit the wood - the argument would seem to be about whether such benefits are necessary in order to enhance the longevity of the instrument). During my days as a tutor I regularly got various kinds of minor maintenance work on students' guitars - restrings, cleaning, minor setup work, etc. The brew that I referred to upthread was very good at cleaning up dirty fretboards - it gave the wood finish a bit of extra lustre and made it feel a bit nicer to play, and was very good for cleaning out the gunge that had invariably accumulated either side of the frets. It also did an excellent job of brightening up the frets themselves, making sideways movement of strings across frets a little bit smoother (this may not mean much to a lot of bass players, but techniques such as string bending and sideways vibrato are a key element in pretty much any electric guitarist's technique; clean frets are easier to move across than dirty ones.) So, is it necessary? Debatable. Is it beneficial? IME and IMO, yes, definitely.
Good question. Definitely debatable. Really it wood need proper long term reasearch. I'm surprised no one has done a study. Anecdotal evidence is that you can use real lemon oil, mineral oils, natural oil, animal oils, and natural wax and they will all work to some degree. Some undergo chemical changes and some have different drying properties which can effect wood in various ways. Woods in certain climates will benefit more than other woods. So will wood type. If we are just talking about fretboards then they undergo all sorts of atmospheres and tension changes. And will benefit from a light coating every so often. If you have a new bass it probably best not to put any product on it for a few years (unless absolutely necessary or dirty) as it will have its natural state intact or maybe have some treatment from the factory. Best just to use a damp cloth quickly. After a few years, again this depends on many factors then a quick wipe with your fav product once a year or maybe even every two years. Is likely to be the best option. I would say natural products are the way to go. I would probably stay away from real lemon oil as yes it might bring up frets lovely as its acidic but what effect will that have long term on wood or fret glue if it's strong enough to eat away corrosion. This is my theory from what I've read. I'm also going by leather care which will have some crossover to wood care oddly enough. Ear wax anyone?
Good stuff TC Is this something that came out of your jam with the guitarist earlier on in the week?
No it was from my failed punk project 2 months back. I came up with a few different punk style riffs/noodles etc nothing that's not really been unheard before. Hard to be truly original in punk. And they never seen the light of day.
These cabs have a low/off/high switch on the back. Are these for the tweeter? Can I just switch them to off to bypass the resistors that have fell off? Thanks
Yes it's for the tweeter. Not sure if it bypasses totally. I would think in the off position it would totally be off as the switch is making a simple connection. It's not a complex circuit. I would be tempted to try the amp at low volume level if it works at low level play it till the amp is warmed up then slowly raise the volume any odd noises turn off immediately. And make sure the tweeter position is off or try a good cab. However there could be a risk of further damage to the amp we just don't know. I'm stupid so I would give it a go before taking it to a tech. Let us know the outcome.
'Fraid not: Extract from a Wikipedia article on lemons and lemon oil (as in 'oil from lemon peel'): Here's the main article:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lemon Extract from a Wikipedia article on mineral oil (sometimes called liquid paraffin): ... and here's the main article for this one: https://en.wikipedia...iki/Mineral_oil I don't doubt that some of the stuff marketed as 'lemon oil' is in fact scented mineral oil - who knows, it may even have had some actual lemon oil in it's general vicinity at some point in it's production - but genuine lemon oil is oil extracted from lemon peel. The clue is in the name. Have a nice day. ETA: Forgot to mention that the main reason genuine lemon oil doesn't get used much is that it is very expensive. I bought mine around 20 years ago - a 250 ml bottle was considerably more expensive than the litre of light mineral oil I bought at the same time. Whatever people might want to say about it's use, the simple fact is that lemon oil has long been known about and used as an agent for treating wood, and it is still widely used (admittedly in very small quantities) in wood-treatment products to this day.
Sounds even worse to put an acidic oil on wood that may be a good de greaser or whatever and then overtime let it eat away any fret glue or to mix it with a petroleum product and have some sort of gunk going on. No thanks. Of course that would be an extreme reaction but no way no would I put anything remotely acidic on a fretboard I can only imagine the havoc it could cause a very dry vintage fretboard.

Twincam replied to ash's topic in Basses For Sale
Nice neck on this. As stated I had the neck and it's had a fret level, re crown and 4 stage polish 3-4 hours solid work. Good quality fret material. So it should play very well indeed, for a long time to come. I actually wouldn't mind the bass myself! Alas an upcoming holiday so no funds and no trades Glwts -
The recording sounds OK to me on my speakers - are you hearing a big difference between the low end representation in the room and what the ipad mic is picking up if you listen back on decent speakers?
I would say the mic does a decent(ish) job, it pics up the highs and mids ok, but it will get overloaded easy by the bass if placed too close or it's too loud. But even at a level it can handle it doesn't capture the low end quite like it actually is. The mic picks up the whole room no matter what direction it's in, hence why my playing fret/finger noise etc is picked up just as much as the amp. If it was more focused it would be a bit better. My eq is pretty flat(ish) which I guess helps the iPad out. I guess the recording is actually like I turned my treble up from 11.30 to 1pm, mids up a touch from 12 to 1pm and my bass down a touch from 12.30pm down to 11am. So not too bad a representation for an iPad. If I place it in different areas of the room I can get some nice room ambience going lol.
Mix 1 part lemon oil with 2 parts light mineral oil. I used to use it every time I changed strings on a guitar or bass. During busy gigging schedules that could mean once a month on the gigging guitars (mainly Strat - R/W and Eggle Berlin - Ebony); less frequently on the basses of course... The recipe was given to me by one of the senior techs at Eggle Guitars many years ago. A 250ml bottle lasts for ever; I still have plenty left in a bottle I prepared probably 10 or 11 years ago. The mineral oil feeds the wood and the lemon oil brightens up the frets - at least that's how I remember it. Whatever, it worked extremely well; the guitars felt great and smelled nicely lemony!
The guy must be a right!. As lemon oil is scented mineral oil haha! So your just wasting your time.
I'll go first then. I have a busy month so may not get another chance to record one if i didn't do it today. Agwin, apologies for stealing your spot Here's mine: https://soundcloud.c...-fied/andromeda Recorded straight from bass into garageband. No amp simulation, 7% reverb on my AJR singlecut. Hope you enjoy Just listened back to it for the first time, i should probably have used some compression!! Sorry about that
Very nice really like the tone. And something a bit different and not as well recorded. I think next month I might start using a proper mic and interface, i prefer micing a cab over direct. I actually could go direct now but in the spirit of making the noodles simple as poss I've carried on with the iPad only method but getting a bit tired of it. Just need to get a suitable mic Anyhow kinda punk inspired this actually went wrong and ended up playing too many bars of one thing and missing something out. But that's Jazz. Fender mustang reissue and brand new roundwounds urgh iPad sat in the middle of me and a Ashdown 4x10 powered by Bugera bvp5500. There's a pro set up right there haha. https://soundcloud.com/user-531446910/punk-noodle Oh bugger I'm 17 seconds over just realised. You will have to forgive my mistake please that's the extra bars.

If waiting for them I have all the internal house doors from living room to front door, with the key in the door and I open the curtains wide open and I sit at the window. Like a dog waiting his owner(s) to return. Then I'm there at the door before they get out the van. We have a downstairs toilet near the front door that only guests use normally, but if I did need it and I was in there I still wouldn't miss anyone at the door.
