I have a spare for everything. I use two 1x12 cabs so no single point of failure there. I take two basses and two amps (my Markbass F500 is great to have as a spare as it takes very little room). Spare strings/cables and that's it.

Is it just a super-loud 450W?[/quote] It's the way it delivers the power - the Shuttle 6 I had had a very weak fundamental and when I boosted the bass end it used up a lot of the stated wattage. Guitar players would often point out that a a good 30 watt valve amp (Badcat/Matchless) sounds louder than most 50 to 100 watt transister amps.

I hadn't given Yamaha a thought before but recently got a BB2024X which is one of the finest basses I have ever played

Low output is not a bad thing as most amps have a pre amp gain to get the right input level to the eq/power section. If the sound is not to yoiur liking and you want more bottom end a thumper is a good choice, as id an SD quarter pounder.

Also, if the bass you really like costs a little too much it is better to wait a while and save a little than be in the same situation in 6 months time.

I have had a number of quests for a five string and recently concluded it was not a case of 'need' but more one of 'want'. I prefer playing 4 string but have a 5'er as well and it's one of those things that every so often I take out to a gig for a change.

If you are looking for old school you should look at the TC Electronics RH450. My F500 is a real nice piece of kit and about as loud as anyone should need, but it is very clean and punchy and the VLE serves to soften the sound but doesn't add any grit or low down 'omph' that a good valve amp or the RH450 does.

Much of what Linus27 has written I can associate with except I find playing out in a band three/four times a month is a great stress reliever and breaks the regularity presented by my family/job - both of which I have no issues with. I really dislike rehearsing and am fortuntae enough to be in a band where we can introduce new songs with confidence without (if any) rehearsing. We probably rehearse once every two or three months and yet the set we played last weekend had eight new songs in it from the set we played on New Year.

They are wedge shape but can be stand mounted as well. I used to have Mackie SR150 but this just couldn't cut through the mix - mspeakers far too small

But then that's why she will never be for sale! At the end of the day people are going to 'big up' their items for sale. Some may well be excellent basses but the other thing to consider is that what one person likes in a bass is not necessarily what another player will rave over. I'm sure there are people that will pick up my '62 and feel they have played a lot better, but for me it's the one.
