Great Amp
Be careful with statements like this. It is my understanding that Eden made a number of changes (including structural) to improve cooling in their amps to be able to run at 2ohms (i.e. 2 x 4ohm cabs). Running at 2ohms at high volumes on a WT400 will likely lead to overheating and can severely damage the amp.
2. It's done safely in guitar amps by removing the two outer valves in a four valve set up. Not sure of the pairing in an 8 valve set up and whether the concept is the same. What you will find is that those valves remaining will be working much harder and liable to wear out quicker so you might not get what you are looking for, which is overall longer valve life. Guitarist do this to get the compression/overdrive earlier and valve life is part of the thinking.
3.
Me too, if it's easily reversible and doesn't require a soldering iron!
Yep, no soldering iron, just swapping over two pairs of wires that are held in place by spade connectors. Takes about 20 minutes - remember to unscrew the speakers with the combo lying on its back and the speaker facing upwards. That way there is no strain on the last bolts and the speaker will not 'topple' out when all the screws are removed.
4.
As many people said it all boils down to taste and personal preference. But let me first say one thing here for all those who don't like the piezo tweeter, it is foolish to disconnect it because it operates through a crossover circuit and essentially it doesn't come into play unless you tweak your eq to the higher frequencies, if you keep your high EQ reasonably flat and you use the VLE (Vintage Loudspeaker Emulator) without activating the other filter the VPF (Variable Pre-Shape Filter) which enhances both low and highs in a V-shape then you can be certain that you will never have your sound going through the piezo tweeter. Now that we have crushed that silly preconception we can elaborate the difference between the 4 Combos.
From my perspective it is not a preconception. I bypassed the crossover and connected the 12" speaker direct to the amp out on my CMD121P combo and the improvement in sound is way above what is was having to 'dial out' the spitty piezo. It certainly had more 'presence' than was previously heard with the crossover/piezo in circuit. Using the VLE did more to the sound than take out the piezo - that was my choice and the sound for me is so much the better for it. What Markbass should have done is include an attenuator for the piezo as they do with their cabs. But they don't and maybe bypassing the crossover, which is not the highest quality item I have come across, has more benefits than just getting the piezo out of the circuit as it might be that this component some of the life out of the sound.
5. I have a WT400 (great great amps) and have paired it up with two Bergantino 1x12's, two EA CXL112's and also with a 4 ohm Epifani UL210. The amp shone with all three combinations, but the cabs I have kept above the other combinations is the Bergantino's.
6. 4001's and Hiwatt's are still up there in my books - welcome
7. Welcome - good to hear from other 4/6 stringers
8. Lot's of information here: http://www.musicmanbass.org/mycustompage0019.htm
9.
Where will you start looking for a pre-eb stingray? I've been reading a little about them and would be interested to know where to look.
Just keep your eye out and wait. They do come up but the isue for me is that a lot of them are quite heavy - over 10lbs. My '79 'Ray is under 9lb and is truly a great instrument, but some are like boat anchors so you need to try before you buy.
10. Very nice
11. I'm looking for a '72 or earlier P Bass with a rosewood 'board so thought I would put my Spector NS4 up as trade bait. The Spector is in immacuklate condition and is a truly wonderful bass - it's just that I'm into P Basses in a big way and would love a rosewood 'board early 70's version to gig. It must be all original and play great - I'm in two minds here and not at all fussed if my Spector stays!
12.
Yeah, all the cabs have a tweeter control on the side, something which is missing from the combos. To be honest, for my tone, I find that I don't normally use the tweeter - Mark Bass speakers tend to be punchy as heck anyway.
I disconnected the tweeter in my CMD121P combo and it made a world of difference. The 12" speaker alone has enough top end for me and I don't miss the spittyness of the piezo at all.
13. People tend to overlook what a good set up can do for any bass
14. Oh dear
15. My '79 'Ray is not at all 'scratchy' like I find the current 3 band eq models. Having the controls flat the sound is very passive like for want of a better term - although mine does have through body stringing and the chunkier bridge which likely affects the sound as well.
16. Electro music is selling the Cub (Phil Jones) for £296 - now that has got me thinking: http://www.electromusic.co.uk/Phil-Jones-B...Cub.html?page=1
17. And where are the pictures of the Sandberg?
18. Does the Sandberg have lightweight tuners? If not a set of Hipshot's would help. The other thing to consider is a Mono strap. With reard to the F bass, yes it is possible but is it really necessary - sometimes a new bass feels different but that does not necessarily mean better. I used to think that I would like a slimmer neck for my P Bass and 'Ray, but after playing them for a 20 minutes or so I get back into the shape and feel of them.
19. I've got the TA501 which has a valve compressor and this certainly puts a bit of warnth into the other wise 'hi-fi' presentation of Markbass amps. I also find tha the LM series doesn't sound quite 'right' at higher volumes. My F500 certainly sounds great when wound up to gig volumes whereas my CMD121P, even with an extension cab, doesn't have the 'slam' I'm loking for.
20.
Point taken - but is that 'something special' worth that thousands of pounds price tag?
Yep
21. Still odd that the endorsee's still not there despite the brand being sold
22. Shame that the gig shown afterwards wasn't with WIlko in the band (although worth keeping on the hard drive for the Blockheads set)
23. Getting a contract is always best which protects against such circumstances - in fact it is unlikely the band would have been bumped if there was a contract in place. I would name the place here as it serves as a warning to others on this forum to make sure they get some written agreement with the establishment in question should they ever get offered a gig there.
24. Willie was a great bass player - didn't James Jamerson inherit Willies DB?
